R OTHENBURG A well-known, touristy, and crowded town was always a wonderful place to stop along the Romantic Road. She enjoyed being in a town where so many tourists had a glimpse of Germany. Restaurants, hotels, and shops all geared toward the tourist, but the town was still stunningly beautiful. It was always a relief to leave the chaos and travel to the smaller and quieter villages free of the tour buses. Dinkelsbuhl, a few miles down the road, was one of her favorites. The Rothenberg Christmas Market was huge and hosted a beautifully curated array of booths while the market in Dinkelsbuhl was tiny and everyone seemed to know one another. Handmade ornaments, hand knitted hats and gloves and a few food vendors were all this market had to offer. But it was one of her favorites as the townspeople gathered to enjoy a beer or a hot chocolate and embrace the holidays.
H EIDELBERG She loved the historic and beautiful town of Heidelberg. When she imagined a quintessential German town, this was it. A gorgeous castle, a river, beautiful shops, a variety of restaurants, and one of the best Christmas Markets in all of Europe. Vendors sold ornaments, gifts, nutcrackers and more, but she loved the food the most. She almost couldn’t wait for the bratwurst to come off the grill but when it was served with a spiralized grilled potato, she knew the wait was worth it. Now she would search out some wonderful, sweet treats.
