Old Eastbournian Magazine 2024-25

Hewitt Week and all 64 schools had their flags flown down the side of the first fairway at Deal. In the first round Eastbourne were drawn against a strong Haileybury team and we went down by 3 games to 2. Our winners were Ben Dawson and Peter Walker by 5 & 4 and Ben Twine and Jack Hughes by 2 up, the latter against a pair of young Italian brothers off scratch and plus 2. In the Prince’s Plate we beat King Edward’s Birmingham 2–1 and then only narrowly lost to Epsom 2–1. Ben Dawson and Peter Walker, as a pair, remain unde- feated in the Hewitt and Plate. We failed to qualify at Knole Park for the finals of the Grafton Morrish but it was great to see Martin Patmore back playing for us with his long time teammate Mark Stewart. In the Cyril Gray Tournament in June at Worplesdon Golf Club we sailed past Bish- op’s Stortford 3–0 but in the second round found Epsom too strong for us. The team consisted of: Adrian Sharpin, Mark Stewart, Ben Burrows, Paul Wickman, David Barwell, Adam Walker and Tony Dunn (taking the place of Mark in the second round). In the Public Schools Putting Tourna- ment at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, we finished a lowly seventh out of the eight teams which means that we were relegated and will only be back in the competition in 2026. But our thanks go to Captain Grant Leonard and his team for putting up a good fight with some very close matches. The Sussex Schools Tournament in Sep- tember at West Sussex involves teams of six players from Eastbourne, Hurstpierpoint, Lancing and Brighton playing scratch four- somes matchplay over two rounds. We won one match in the morning and one in the afternoon but Hurstpierpoint won the tournament by a considerable distance,

The final, with Harry giving 9 shots to Tony, turned out to be a close contest but Harry emerged victorious by 2&1 partly thanks to a birdie 2 at the very demanding 17th. Harry also won in 2023 so many con- gratulations to him on a successful defence of his title. And thanks to all those who took part in the competition over the summer. We plan to repeat the event in 2025 but would like to see more entries, up to a first

Then came teams led by Charlie Baddeley and Jack Hughes. Thanks to David Burt for arranging for us to play at West Surrey and to Ian Sands for transport- ing the College team.

Once again our Norfolk Tour in the Spring of 2024 provided golf at the challenging and picturesque courses of Hunstanton, Royal West Norfolk (Brancaster) and Shering- ham. Thanks go to David Burt for organising and for Andrew Sherwood and George Eve for enabling us to play these courses at much reduced green fees. We held our Autumn Meeting at Cooden Beach GC with five first timers for an OEGS event out of the field of 17. A strong south easterly wind made for tough playing conditions. This did not however prevent Alex Photiou driving the green at the 306-yard 5th hole, indeed it may have helped! Local knowledge appeared to be

Annual membership of the OEGS costs only £30 (or £5 if you are under 30 years old). And again, for anyone under 30, we almost always generously subsidise their golf from OEGS funds. 24 members of the OEGS entered in 2024. The semi-finals and final were played on 26 October at Rye, with the four competitors all getting a free day’s golf and excellent lunch. Chris Stephenson was thanked for making this day at Rye possible. Both semi-

Brian Meaby We are extremely sorry to report the death of Brian Meaby in December 2024. Brian was one of the stalwarts of the OEGS alongside his brother Robert and, in more recent years, his son Charles. He represented Eastbourne in the Halford Hewitt between 1956 and 2010 and presented the Hewitt trophies in 2012. He was a President of the OEGS and also represented

On 1 September, thanks to the organi- sational skills of Colin Farrant, a very good number of mostly younger OEs (and a team from the College itself) assembled at West Surrey GC to play a Texas Scramble event in teams of four. The victorious team was the one led by Spike Gleave and compris- ing Max Malewicz, Joshua Veitch and Leon
