The Devonshire Society Find out more about the schools’ legacy club
F ounded in 2002 by Forbes Wastie, whose life we remember on page 16, the Devonshire Society cur - rently has almost 90 members, made up of men and women who intend to leave a financial gift to Eastbourne College Incorporated in their will. All legacy giving helps to fund bursaries or development projects, with bursa- ries giving life-changing opportunities to young people. Foundation Day Foundation Day, our annual big thank you to all of our benefactors and Devonshire Society members, was held on Saturday 15 June. The day began with a thanksgiving service in chapel with the College Choir in fine form, followed by a Cham - pagne reception in the Christopher Kirk-Greene function rooms situated next to the dining hall, with entertain - ment provided by some of the College’s top musicians. Headmaster Tom Lawson, a new member of the Devon- shire Society, welcomed the guests to lunch, after which there was an opportunity to hear from OE Josh Curryer (Reeves 2014–16). Josh spoke about his tough start in life, being fostered, and his ambition to attend the College. Thanks to the bursary he was awarded, he was able to reach his goal, joining the College in the sixth form. His heartwarming and emotional story was received with great applause. Legacies left by Devonshire Society members help fund bursaries awarded to pupils like Josh, and he expressed his gratitude to everybody who makes a contribution. The lunch concluded with a preview of the Blue Sky Bursaries Appeal video which was to be released on Speech Day two weeks later.
Awards and prizes We would be delighted to name a bursary in your honour, available for legacy gifts of £300,000 or more. If you are considering such a gift, please do get in touch, so we can discuss your plans. Inheritance tax relief This relief applies to those who wish to leave a legacy of 10 per cent or more of their net estate to charity. It means the remaining assets will be taxed at 36 per cent instead of the usual 40. In-life giving Some people like to see their money in action, using their income now to transform lives for the future. Do please let us know if you are interested in this form of ‘living legacy’. Already have a will? A letter of wishes or a codicil is sufficient to make a change and leave a legacy to the Charity – please contact your solicitor.
