The Class of 1979 Chris Porter (Gonville 1974–79) writes: Thirty-two OEs from the Class of 1979 met up for their annual lunch together at the Boot & Flogger bar and restaurant near London Bridge on Thursday 17 October. This year’s gathering was especially significant since it represented 50 years since the boys from this cohort first arrived at the College in September 1974. It was a fine lunch and great to see everyone who attended and looking so well. Special mention must be made of Barry Cummings (Powell 1974–79) and Andy Roberts (Blackwater 1974–79) who had flown in from the States and Norway respectively. Congratulations too to the 1974-79 members of Powell House who arrived in number, with nine of their year present – what an effort! We’d love to see any of our friends who left the College in 1979 at our next annual reunion in October 2025, especially anyone from an un-represented Wargrave! Also any 1979 leaver from Nugent House, as we build up to the 2027 lunch, which will mark 50 years since the Class of 1979 girls joined the College in 1977. Please get in touch with Chris Porter at chris.porter500@ntlworld.com if you can make it and can join us.

Dinner in Bangkok The Far East tour continued with dinner at Bangkok Heightz Rooftop Restaurant & Bar in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday 24 October, hosted by Emma Garrett.

Pub drinks in Meads John Thornley was on hand to buy the drinks at the Ship Inn in Meads, Eastbourne, when a group of ES members got together on Thursday 7 November. John said: ‘It was a very convivial evening of reminiscing with some amusing anecdotes coming out of the woodwork and connecting the generations. A true example of what is one of the core missions of the Eastbournian Society: bringing together and keeping in touch.’

A visit to Singapore A very pleasant evening was spent in the idiosyncratic ‘5 by Sans Façon’, a French restaurant set in a traditional black and white bungalow located at the Oval in Singapore. The homely and unassuming venue, set against the golden sky of a Singapore sunset and the al fresco ambience perfectly matched the informal gathering hosted by headmaster Tom Lawson and development director Emma Garrett on Monday 21 October. Sanjay Kirpalani

(Wargrave 1980– 1983, St Andrew’s 1977–80, Ascham 1974–77) even brought along his blue book – treas- ured for 40 years, a reminder of his days at Eastbourne.

Breakfast in Dubai The Hill House Brasserie in Dubai was the venue for an East- bournian Society breakfast for OEs and others on Thursday 19 November. The event was kindly sponsored by Eastbourne financial planning firm Global Wealthmap, and among the guests was Jon Bathard-Smith, the College’s director of marketing and admissions. Our thanks go to Oscar Orellana-Hyder (Reeves 2002–07) for helping organise the event.

The Oriental Club lunch A group of senior Old Eastbournians who were at the College in the late 1950s have regularly met for lunch each year at London’s Oriental Club. They held their latest gathering on Tuesday 29 October and Liz Silvester from the Eastbournian Society was able to join them.
