Welcome

As a seasoned fashion writer and editor, there’s little I love more than a scour around the hidden gems of my favourite city, London, which I’m lucky enough to call home. Despite the bounty of options that shopping in the capital presents, there’s one area I always return to: Carnaby. I was raised on a diet of stories from my parents about their time spent in London before moving to the suburbs, and Carnaby, with its smorgasbord of shops, bars and restaurants, features heavily in them (alongside tales of rubbing shoulders with various members of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones). Thankfully, Carnaby’s as free- spirited and fashion-forward today as it’s always been. First things first: start a day of retail therapy with a coffee. I’ll pick up an oat milk flat white from Carnaby’s Department of Coffee and Social Affairs or Soho Grind . Denmark’s finest, GANNI , is a firm favourite of the style set and this year is all about easy-breezy silhouettes and bright, bold prints, something GANNI has purveyed since its inception. GANNI bags in tow, I’ll then head to IKKS Paris , which has made its UK debut on Carnaby Street. Its Breton tops and classic leather jackets will be coming home with me, as will its comfy everyday lineup t-shirts (because, really, you can never have too many). Annie's Ibiza is my next stop. The brains behind it, Annie Doble, handpicks each creation herself and it's the perfect place for those who like to make an impact. I’ve got my eyes firmly on Doble’s fit-and-flare mini dresses, which are crying out to be debuted as part of my wardrobe. Next, I’ll squeeze in a laser facial at Skin Laundry (a must- have for glowing skin) and pick up some beauty essentials from Pixi (I swear by its formidable Glow Tonic) before popping into Benefit for the best mascara money can buy. For the men in my life, I'll swing by Aubin , Scotch & Soda and Diesel for all manner of crisp staples. These are among the best curated menswear stores in London, stocking everything from button-up shirts to cool everyday jackets. Finally, you might find me ploughing into the chilli chicken at Dishoom , the KFC at Korean Dinner Party or the beef tartare at Bar Crispin . Carnaby has over 60 restaurants for hungry shoppers to choose from, meaning there’s something for every mood. Stomach and shopping bags full, I’ll then hail a taxi and head home. Carnaby Eats

Carnaby is the place to find the most diverse and exciting eateries in London. Discover a range of dining and drinking spots that call this buzzing area home. With over 60 restaurants, bars, cafés and pubs and more than 30 global cuisines, Carnaby has something for everyone. So grab your friends and head to one of these hotspots.

AL FRESCO

Carnaby might be a top-class food and drink destination, but you’d be mistaken to think that all the action happens indoors. Al fresco eateries rule the roost in London (whatever the weather). So sit outdoors, sip on a cocktail, eat good food and chat until light turns to dark. Pastaio on Ganton Street always delivers the Italian goods with a range of tantalising small plates and freshly made pasta. If you know what’s good for you, don’t miss out on their whole lobster linguine sharer. Travel the world without leaving London in buzzing Kingly Court. There's something here to suit everyone, with plenty of options spanning global gastronomy such as Detox Kitchen , Pizza Pilgrims , Japanese spot Shoryu , chicken focused Marsha and vegan Mexican from Club Mexicana . If you’re after Asian food with a twist, head to Ugly Dumpling on Ganton Street and chow down on classics like its mouthwatering cheeseburger dumplings. One of the cutest al fresco spots in cobblestoned Newburgh Street is Zahter . Enjoy perfectly portioned mezze dishes with friends alongside a crisp glass of Chablis. Or head to Antidote for great wine and cheeseboards. Don’t miss FOLIE which serves up high-quality French-Italian fusion cuisine on a rather lovely terrace overlooking Golden Square. Rediscover the dining culture of the riviera.

BREAKFAST BITES

We've all heard it's one of the most important meals of the day, but did you know there are lots of breakfast places in Carnaby to set you up properly? Maybe you like to savour your first meal of the day. Or perhaps you find mornings a little hectic and prefer to grab and go. Either way, there are plenty of breakfast options to line your stomach. And let's not forget the 'big C' – yes, we take coffee very seriously in central London. SO, where are the best spots to head to in the a.m.? Soho Grind effortlessly transitions from day to night, with its hub of morning activity up top and drinking den below ground. But their coffee is the real star of the show, and you'll find a large range of iced coffee and hot drinks, plus juices, smoothies, and more. Pop by in the morning for a caffeine hit and a croissant to start your day off the right way. The ideal brunch stop begins with Tel Aviv- inspired flavours at The Good Egg. It's the perfect spot for a rendez-vous with friends, a business meeting, or even a morning date. There are plenty of delicious dishes to choose from — think tomatoey shakshuka, doughy babka French toast, or a mezze-style boureka plate, plus energising brunch cocktails including a spicy harissa Bloody Mary.

In Lowndes Court, Department of Coffee and Social Affairs is a haven amongst the hustle and bustle. With two floors of seating (FYI the bottom floor is a great space to work from), it serves up some of the best coffee, pastries and toasties in town. Plus their outdoor seating is perfect for whiling away the hours in the warmer months. Carnaby plays host to one of the most-loved restaurants in London — Dishoom . The large breakfast menu begins with their famous Naan Rolls which are sure to make your heart sing whether you choose to fill them with bacon, sausage, egg or vegan sausage. Other winning dishes include the Parsi Omelette and The Big Bombay. One tip: don’t fill up on all the food before you've sampled their delicious chai.

LUNCHT IME

Carnaby is one of those rare places in central London that's full of independent eateries. So whether you’re looking for a delicious snack to grab and go or planning a leisurely lunch hour with friends, an array of unique and delicious cuisine awaits you. You’ll find affordable lunchtime deals ready to pick up and take with you, as well as more elevated spots for catching up with pals. If you were lucky enough to try Imad’s Syrian Kitchen pop-up on Ganton Street last year, you’ll be pleased to know his restaurant is just a stone's throw away from here. On the top floor of Kingly Court, serving Syrian delights including the best hummus and falafel alongside their delicious Mtafayt Bamyeh, this cuisine won’t go amiss at any lunchtime. Peruvian eatery Señor Ceviche makes for a delightfully different dining experience. The restaurant is inspired by the bohemian district of Lima, with stripped-back interiors and colourful Peruvian street art. As well as ceviche (fish cured in fresh citrus juices), you'll find Peruvian BBQ specials like Pachamanca pork ribs and grilled chicken wings. Polpo on Beak Street is a long standing fixture of the area, serving small plates like polpette and octopus salad and cuttlefish in its ink, alongside its famous fritto misto. Does it get better than that? Yes, it does! Kingly Street’s cutest kiosk, Kaleido has got your lunchtime meal covered. If you’re feeling a bit playful, try out its freshly wrapped salad rolls, which are full of flavours from around the world. One to get your hands on is their Parma ham melon and basil pesto roll. Bursting with flavour, this roll gives us real holiday vibes.

D I NNER

You’ll find a huge variety of dinner spots in Carnaby, with everything from street food staples and unique culinary concepts to al fresco dining and quick pre-theatre bites. Whether you're planning a full-blown feast to mark a special occasion or a group dinner catching up with friends, Carnaby ticks all the boxes. To get you on your way, we’re sharing a few favourites that wow time and time again, whatever the occasion. Let’s start with Kolamba , a forerunner in the wave of Sri Lankan restaurants in London. Located on Kingly Street, it takes inspiration from the street hawkers and casual eateries of Sri Lanka’s bustling capital city, Colombo. Think coconut curries, fiery sambols, and roti flatbreads. For a midweek date night or intimate dinner with a pal, another firm fave is Dehesa . This charcuterie and tapas bar brings together Spain’s tapas tradition and Italy’s aperitivo culture. Depending on the time of year, its sharing dishes might include truffled goat's cheese with honey, charred octopus or braised rabbit leg, so you’re always in for a welcome surprise. Let’s not forget Le Bab , the brainchild of two graduates who wanted to bring the street kebabs of their student days up a notch or two. Head to the top floor of Kingly Court and you’ll find the ultimate (not-so-guilty) pleasure: scrumptious kebabs and shawarmas made from the finest local ingredients. Jinjuu on Kingly Street is a Korean spot that serves up all the goodies. It offers a range of delights from tacos and dumplings to salads and small plates, and a visit wouldn’t be complete without a bite of its signature Korean fried chicken.

Wine Not?

01 What's the best thing about Bar Crispin? It’s a combination of engaged and wonderful guests, a fun and unique bar design and our fabulous team. And having somewhere great to drink the best wines in such a central location like Carnaby! 02 How are the menus created? Our food menus are always seasonal and produce- focused. We're lucky to work with passionate suppliers, so we treat their produce with love and respect. Our head chef, Fabien Spagnolo, creates incredible dishes with attention to detail and generally an element of surprise, but not in a naff way. Dig down in your ice cream and find shards of caramelised white chocolate. Bite into cod’s roe toast and get a hit of tarragon oil, a pop of trout roe, with a crunch of fennel. Menus are dictated by the seasons but created with passion. 03 Out of your wines, which would you select? Le Petit Beaufort from superstar winemakers Alice & Quentin Beaufort is simply stunning. Technically a Crémant de Bourgogne (as the winery sits just outside of the Aube in southern Champagne), it's a modest yet immensely characterful wine. Only a very small number of bottles are produced ever year, which makes it even more special. 04 What's the inspiration behind Bar Crispin? Bar Crispin took inspiration from tiny wine bars around the world. An unfamiliar design courtesy of our friend Jermaine Gallacher, paired with friendly service, the best low-intervention wine and a fun menu is what Bar Crispin is all about. A place to get merry and laugh, whilst eating and drinking delicious things. 05 Top three places to eat out in Carnaby? Le Bab, Bao, Kolamba right next door to Bar Crispin (and I can’t wait to try Rita’s!).

Meet Dominic Hamdy, the founder of Bar Crispin, a natural wine bar and restaurant on Kingly Street.

06 Top three shopping spots in Carnaby? MOSCOT, Third Man Records and Liberty, of course.

07 Why did you choose to open in Carnaby? It's an area with so much energy and atmosphere, and it's steeped in history going back to the 1960s. I felt we could add something to the Carnaby community with Bar Crispin that wasn’t currently being offered. 08 Your best memory since opening in Carnaby? Every Monday in Carnaby surprises me and forms a lasting memory that Londoners have an unwavering appetite to eat and drink well. It’s all very well trying to shop more ethically, but what about the food and drink we’re consuming every day? Carnaby’s vibrant array of independent restaurants, bars, cafés and street food joints are on a mission to leave something positive behind. Community has never been more important in Carnaby and the area is full of creative initiatives, from efforts to reduce plastic packaging or promote plant-based food, to charity meal-for-a-meal schemes. Join us as we explore what many of our long-standing F&B venues are doing to give back. EATING & DRINKING IN CARNABY

Imad’s Syrian Kitchen Kingly Court

Dishoom 22 Kingly Street Since 2015, Dishoom has supported Magic Breakfast by donating breakfast to a hungry child for every breakfast served in its restaurants. This is on top of its Meal for a Meal promise, which has seen it give over 13 million meals to children who would otherwise go hungry.

This eatery is run by Imad Alarnab, a Syrian chef, entrepreneur and refugee who ran a handful of successful restaurants in Damascus before his businesses were destroyed by war. Making his way from Lebanon through Europe, Imad shared his skills by cooking for other refugees — up to 400 at a time. This community ethos has stayed true with Imad’s Syrian Kitchen , where £1 from every bill is donated to the refugee charity Choose Love.

Le Bab Kingly Court The gourmet kebab restaurant at the top of Kingly Court is unashamedly meat-loving, but it's making leaps and bounds in its vegan offering. Last year, Le Bab announced that for every vegan Dirty Bab and sabich sold, it would plant one tree.

EL&N 35 Great Marlborough Street Behind its millennial pink facade, EL&N is making a lot of ambitious climate pledges — fully recyclable packaging, a range of reusable take-away cups and composting wherever possible. In terms of produce, they use organic Burford Brown eggs, local milk and fish from MCS Grade 3 sources or lower.

Marsha Kingly Court This chicken restaurant in Kingly Court has some impressive eco credentials and is a member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association. It buys higher-welfare, free- roaming chickens and minimises waste by celebrating the less fashionable parts of the chicken. The paper used for its menus is made from almond by-products and recycled fibres. What’s more, Marsha partners with charities like Streetsmart, WaterAid and Hospitality Action.

IT'S TIME TO SHOP SMART Hands up if you love shopping…Great — me too! But it’s time to seriously consider our shopping habits. Now, more than ever, browsing and buying with a conscience should be (and will be) at the forefront of our minds. Forget wearing something just once — it’s about squeezing every bit of wearability from a garment by re-styling, re-wearing and, eventually, recycling those pieces we’ve loved living in. It’s about finding those brands who care about their products, who make conscious decisions to embrace sustainable materials, ethical practices and responsible manufacturing, and who are trying to make a difference with their values. Look to bloobloom , for example, the eyewear label whose #pairforpair initiative is providing glasses to those who need them the most. Or to fashion label RÆBURN , who's creating clothes (and great-looking clothes at that) made from 100% recycled materials. Quite frankly, if a brand isn’t already doing something to combat the effects of the fashion industry on the world, then it simply isn’t good enough. Enter Carnaby. The brains behind one of the most visited shopping destinations have been busy curating a retail experience built around stores with a conscience — those with charity and sustainability at the centre of their beliefs. And so, to get you in the mood for a little bit of responsible retail therapy, here are our top picks from just some of Carnaby's brands so we can shop (consciously, of course) to our heart's content. Rejoice!

IKKS Paris Is there anything more chic than a sailor stripe swimsuit? Well, actually, yes — one that’s made from recycled marine plastic. The IKKS Paris Free The Sea collection supports The Sea Cleaners, an organisation taking a stand and fighting against the plastic pollution of our oceans.

Timberland Timberland isn't just about those classic tan leather worker boots (we all know the ones). These Shandals (yes, that's a shoe-sandal hybrid) are perfect for hiking, running and gentle strolling. What's more, they’re made from ReBOTL™ recycled fabric, which is at least 50% recycled plastic, and GreenStride™ soles made of 75% renewable materials.

RÆBURN Be sure to pack this RÆBURN raincoat in 100% certified RÆCYCLED polyester ripstop, a material made from PET plastic bottles. Bravo! Look to RÆBURN for its responsible outerwear and innovative fabrics.

bloobloom This is an eyewear company making a real difference. Invest in a pair of their specs (I particularly love these frames, which may I add, are super-flattering and timeless) and bloobloom will donate a pair to someone in need. Changing the world one pair of glasses at a time.

Monki Capsule wardrobes hold the key to the future; find something you love and wear it again (and again and again). This pair of perfectly slouched off- white jeans (made from 100% organic cotton) give a little extra compared to any regular blue denim and will pair perfectly with everything in your wardrobe. NICCE In the perfect shade of sunset orange, this short- and-tank-top combo is a comfy take on the two-piece that’ll see you through many a lazy day. What’s more, these cute little co-ords from NICCE are made from 100% EarthCare organic cotton and packaged in LDPE, a recyclable material sourced from recycled plastic waste.

GANNI In GANNI 's most recent sustainability report, founder Nicolaj Reffstrupp revealed 92% of the items in the 2022 collection were made from certified organic lower-impact or recycled materials. This is just one of its targets for a more sustainable and responsible future. Head to GANNI for signature brights, prints galore and outfit-enhancing accessories.

Annie’s Ibiza x Clio Peppiatt

Come ON! This is how you do a showstopper. Founder Annie, who is now an ambassador for Project Zero (the UK’s leading ocean charity), holds sustainability at the forefront of Annie’s Ibiza , stocking responsibly sourced pieces, vintage items and true one-offs like this spectacular handbeaded mini dress.

Carnaby’s much-loved pubs reflect the area’s diverse history and represent an escape where folks come to dine, drink and have a good time. Kingly Street is home to two iconic watering holes, The Clachan and The Red Lion . The former, tucked behind Liberty London, was devised as a Scottish-themed and highly ornate ‘gin palace’. The latter delivers a welcoming cosy glow to all who enter with its atmospheric wood-panelled entrance illuminated by coloured-glass lamps. the entrance of The Shakespeare’s Head . If you’re a fan of The Simpsons, this strangely blueish face is something you'll probably recognise. Standing out in its red paint, The Shaston Arms on Ganton Street prides itself on being the perfect place for a pint. Mind , RRL , American Classics , Barbour , Aubin and Fred Perry , not forgetting boots from Red Wing .

Newburgh offers a varied selection of food and drink. For after-work drinks, head over to traditional English pubs The Shaston

For those seeking brands with signature styles, Newburgh Quarter is home to some of the coolest independent labels, including Lazy Oaf , KLORIS and Billionaire Boys Club. Annie's Ibiza defines the meaning of glamour, and with collections ranging from colourful, show- stopping sequin dresses to sunshine yellow faux fur coats, this is a stop to add to the top of your list.

Arms or The White Horse or for a bite to eat try Ugly Dumpling or Kua ‘Aina . If you're looking for a glass of wine or two, head to Antidote for a selection of natural wines and charcuterie boards. Or, for a caffeine fix, try the Department of Coffee & Social Affairs iced oat latte, a fan favourite.

Of course, there’s more to Newburgh Quarter than clothing. Check out glasses and accessories brand Cubitts for contemporary spectacles. For jewellery, find handcrafted creations from Mor London or iconic rock and roll pieces from The Great Frog , which has been located here for 50 years. If you're in the market for a new piercing, head to Metal Morphosis and choose from a wide selection of titanium and sterling silver jewellery to accessorise your ears. After shopping, take some time out to explore the health, hair and beauty stores in the area. Stop by Johnny's Chop Shop barber for a fresh fade or experience a laser facial at Skin Laundry . Premium wet-shaving brand MÜHLE

For the ultimate ramen, head to Kanada-Ya and don't forget to try its delicious sides, including the Korean fried chicken. INO is serving up incredible Greek-inspired food in Newburgh Street, we’d recommend the octopus

taco paired with a crisp glass of traditional Greek wine. Alternatively, sample traditional Turkish food at Zahter . Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and set over three floors with al fresco dining, Zahter showcases true Istanbulite cuisine with its rich and vibrant flavours.
