school sports programs as needed and in other activities. But her day begins with the Breakfast Program. “Sometimes I’mpreparing food at home to bring to the school,” she said, “making huge pots of oatmeal.” She grinned as she observed that having to hand-stir vast quantities of oatmeal at least three times a week has become part of her physical training to prepare her for holding up the PanAm torch. All that stirring of thick oatmeal gives her torchbearing arm muscles a real workout. She is also doing regular running on her own time, something she took up for physi- cal fitness last year. She also downhill skis during the winter and she is also occupied with a house-building project. By the time this summer rolls around, Eaman expects to be able to set a good strong pace when it comes to her leg of the torch run.

Laura Eaman may be shopping around soon for a special pair of running shoes. Something that will go well with the of- ficial Pan American Games Torch Bearer uniform she will soon be sporting. The Rockland woman is one of the official torchbearers for the 2015 PanAm Games taking place in Toronto this summer. She received an email Friday morning, March 13, confirming her selection as a designated torchbearer along the route through Eastern Ontario. Now she is waiting for more details of her responsibility but knows right now that her part of the run is along a 200-metre stretch of the PanAm torch route through Ottawa’s Kanata suburb. “Super excited” was how Eaman de- scribed her feeling when she received con- firmation of her new role as a PanAmGames torchbearer. She sees it as a great chance to help promote awareness of the Breakfast Program which is part of her duties as an educational assistant at Rockland District High School (RDHS). “It’s a great opportunity to represent the work that we do at the school here,” she said. “I enjoy cookingmyself, and this program is a good thing for students because with our fast-paced lifestyle, we don’t always have time to eat right. We’re always on the go.” The Breakfast Program for students at the school is just one of the duties Eaman has had over the past 14 years as an education assistant at RDHS. She also assists in the

secondary schools within the UCDSB region provided choreographed dance segments inspired by the Taylor Swift hit song, «Shake It Off». No other directions were provided other than the dance segment had to show how the song’s lyrics andmusic inspired the students. All the video footage supplied to the UCDSB communications department was then reviewed and spliced together to provide as many school groups as possible with at least a few seconds of air time online.

Julie Doucet, RDHS education assistant in charge of the Rockland student dance troupe, explained how the students worked out their contribution to the project. «I just let the kids do their thing and they came up with the concept,» she said, noting that all the students involved in the RDHS segment are part of the school’s WEB lea- dership program which serves as a liaison for incoming new students to the school. «These kids are a great group.»
