W atching the winning horse finish in style is an exhilarating moment but for the owner it’s extra special. It is a feeling the Cheltenham and South West Syndicate has experienced first-hand.The 175 members, who own three horses between them, enjoyed a successful and busy first season with four wins from 17 runs. Star of the show was five-year-old mare Timeforwest, who after winning her Market Rasen Handicap Hurdle in March, went on to win at Taunton and Kempton. She is trained by Jonjo O’Neill, one of few to have both ridden and trained a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner. It is hoped Timeforwest, affectionately known as Fizz and half-sister to Chomba Womba, a high class Grade I winning mare, will contest some of the better mares’ races next season. However it was Final Choice, bred by the Queen, who gained the syndicate’s first victory. After coming second at Warwick in December, the four-year-old went on to win at Newbury on New Year’s Eve. Final Choice is trained by Warren Greatrex, who had his first Cheltenham Festival winner in 2015 with Cole Harden in the World Hurdle and saddled 53 winners in 2015-16, his best season to date. Meanwhile, Paul Nicholls-trained The Last But One, will progress to chasing after running a promising hurdle race in April at Taunton to finish third. Crowned Champion National Hunt Trainer an impressive 10 times, Paul has trained more than 2,000 winners including the 2012

Jockey Club – Cheltenham, Wincanton, Exeter and Warwick – they obviously reap the rewards. Alice Linley, the Jockey Club’s marketing executive at Cheltenham, said: “They also get a share in any of the prize money won by the club’s horses, an opportunity to follow each of the horses owned by the club, organised stable visits and exclusive updates and newsletters. “It is a brilliant opportunity for people to be introduced to ownership and the trainers are really excited about the syndicate too. It gives those involved a chance to experience the fun, the excitement, the ups and downs of horse racing from a fresh perspective.” Being part of a syndicate is as exciting as buying a horse outright, yet without the risk and responsibility. As well as getting to know the horses and trainers, members have enjoyed visits to all three yards. “Members have been buoyed by the idea that not only do they own winning racehorses but they are very much part of the team with new friendships forged and social events,” said Alice. Jockeys wear The Jockey Club silks – black with four gold diamonds – which were specially designed with permission from the British Horseracing Authority. Although The Jockey Club dates back to 1750, the new brand of black and gold diamonds was introduced three years ago. With the new season soon upon us, members of the Cheltenham and South West Syndicate are hoping their beloved trio will stay in fine form and clock up even more victories.
