and he’s making that transition to TV. I think he’s doing very well.” The pair even indulged in a little fairway action when Paul visited AP at his home in England. “I really enjoyed working with him. I played a bit of golf with him at his house – he’s got a golf simulator. I got to his house and he said ‘do you want to play a couple of holes?’ I said I’d forgotten my clubs and he said ‘no, in my golf room’.That was nice. I’m an OK golfer, I play to single figures, I think it didn’t hurt that I was able to hit the ball.” There are definite perks to the job for Paul. “It was like with Nick Faldo, Nick gave me a couple of great lessons in golf and as a result I find I can hit the ball pretty well and I suppose it’s one of the nice things about the work that I do. People are very kind, offering their skills back when they see the work that I put into it. “In fairness, all the ones I’ve met are very open to an artist actually, there’s something non- threatening maybe about an artist, I think, or maybe it’s like I’d better be nice to this guy because...”

Crowds gather round to see the sculpture at Cheltenham Racecourse
thankfully they all said ‘Paul, it’s really fantastic, well done’, and if it wasn’t they would have said it to me. A little part of me needs that because sometimes when you’ve been working on something for a while you lose perspective on what it actually looks like. “I don’t have the phenomenal pressures of trying to win the Gold Cup or the US Masters, but let’s be honest, when AP McCoy’s bronze is going up to Cheltenham you know it’s going to be there for a long time and you’ve got to get it right. There is a pressure there, I may not necessarily feel it all the time, but it’s there!” A P has said he is ‘flattered and privileged’ to have been immortalised in bronze at Cheltenham and Paul was thrilled with the response he received at the unveiling. “They were very good to me in Cheltenham. “I spent the week there, it’s an incredible week and I love being there. I just love looking at the jockeys and the horses, the gear they wear and the colours. I suppose I love that fighting spirit they have. Maybe because I’m an artist I see something a little extra that others don’t. I think I’ve got fresh eyes when I go to a racecourse.” But Paul also felt honoured to have spent time with AP and confesses to being a little starstruck. “It was a lot of fun meeting him, he was very open to the sculpture. Basically he would do anything I asked him, which you don’t always get with big sports stars. “I’m honoured to be asked to do a sculpture for Cheltenham Racecourse and for it to be AP McCoy is really cool. There’s still that little excited child part of me... for example, I picked up AP McCoy in Dublin to take him to Crowe Park Stadium and he had the flu that day so I dropped him off at the chemist. I’m just sitting in the car going ‘Wow! I just dropped AP McCoy off at the chemist!’ “It’s a little bit embarrassing because I’m 49 years of age, but it was a little thrill, I have to say.”
Because perhaps they wouldn’t want to be immortalised in bronze in the same unforgettable way as Cristiano Ronaldo has been in his infamous statue. “No! The irony is it was more or less unveiled in the same week, and I got so much positive attention as a result of that. I’m here in Dublin and lots of people were criticising the Ronaldo on radio stations. Then a few people rang in and said ‘have you not seen the new AP McCoy statue in Cheltenham, it’s amazing!’ So I was thrilled because, all joking aside, there’s always a fear that you’re not going to deliver at a level that AP McCoy and Cheltenham deserve. “You have to have the fear, I have to live with the fear because that drives me to really trying to do the best job I could do. I left no stone unturned in terms of making it as good as I could. I also got about 10 people in to look at the clay model, who know racing and AP McCoy really well – 10 people that I trust and
