for the new season AT EXETER
t he new season gets under way at Exeter Racecourse on October 12 and the action comes thick and fast with 16 meetings following in rapid succession, keeping Haldon Hill alive with the sound of galloping hooves and cheering crowds right through until the beginning of May. Competitive racing will be the order of the day on October 24 which features the Best Mate Beginners’ Chase, then on November 7 the spotlight falls on Devon’s premier race meeting, the Haldon Gold Cup, when the crowds will be buzzing with anticipation. Who will be crowned the winner of the 2017 Haldon Gold Cup? It’s a title that’s been won by some of racing’s most valiant stalwarts, such as Cue Card, Best Mate and Viking Flagship and one that has attracted some equally gallant runners such as Kauto Star and Sire De Grugy. With corporate hospitality a sellout, and the Desert Orchid Restaurant the first port of call for those wanting to enhance their raceday with a culinary experience that is spectacular, not least because of the exceptional views across the racecourse, Haldon Gold Cup Day is when premier racing comes to Devon in style. Midweek racing, on Wednesday, November 15, never disappoints, with some of jump racing’s most exciting prospects sure to be in action. It’s a meeting to savour, when racegoers can get
close to future superstars before their careers take them on to the bigger stage. Devon Day on Sunday, November 26, is when the Racing Clydesdales come thundering down the home straight, feathers flying and white faces gleaming as the professional jockeys on board urge their mounts to the line. It’s all in a good cause with Tim Ancrum and Aileen Ware’s wonderful horses racing in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance and adding several thousand pounds to the coffers. You can become a Clydesdale for the day and feel a real part of this iconic occasion or just place a bet and help raise the roof at Exeter as these gentle giants provide an awe-inspiring spectacle.There’s not a dry eye as their very presence seems to evoke an emotive sense of nostalgia. Keep up to date with everything Exeter via the racecourse’s lively social media platforms, which are a source of information, updates, and images of previous exploits on the hill, with regular opportunities to win tickets to the races too.
