several years,” said Alice Linley, who heads the Junior Jumpers scheme.“Throughout the season they will also receive regular newsletters and we are hoping to organise some special trips such as stable visits and provide opportunities to meet racehorses in the future.” The collector’s book includes plenty of “ A pony is a childhood dream. A horse is an adulthood treasure Rebecca Carroll

C heltenham not only encourages this childhood dream but embraces the philosophy that young riders and fans are a vital part in securing the future of the nation’s equestrian industry. Adult members are looked after at Cheltenham and recognised by the special badge they wear but so too are the youngest members, officially known as the Junior Jumpers. This new free membership club scheme was introduced across the south-west in all four racecourses – Cheltenham, Warwick, Exeter and Wincanton just over a year ago. With more than 2,000 members signed up, it has already proved a hit with young riders and fans, who receive a smart slim- line presentation pack, which includes a membership badge, swing badge and a pin badge as well as a raceday collector’s book. For every fixture they attend at any one of the four racecourses, they collect a stamp, which in turn wins them another pin. “It means the more racing they watch, the more badges they earn. There are 10 to collect in all, as we anticipate that they will be involved with Junior Jumpers for

space to collect autographs of racing world personalities; a chance to colour in their own silks and learn valuable information about horsing heroes and racing definitions. In recent years, the sport has identified the importance of investing time at a younger level to encourage the riders of the future. The British Horseracing Authority has actively encouraged more young people to consider a career in the saddle to help prevent a decline in the number of jump jockeys. Not only does Junior Jumpers fit this national drive to encourage young riders but it fits Cheltenham Racecourse’s philosophy which seeks to involve younger generations. Every year it hosts two Family Fun Racedays – one is always held in November and on New Year’s Day.There are also additional Family Fun Days across the south-west region. “The aim of Junior Jumpers is to help children who are involved in racing through their parents to have a love for the sport in their own right,” said Alice. “We very much want to make them feel valued and a part of what we do here just as their mums and dads do.”
