NOVEMBER 2023 HOME BOOK SELECTIONS

November’s Selections for the New Worlds Reading Initiative

As students and their families add a new book to their home libraries, they will begin to notice the ways in which their reading experiences can be both similar and different each month. Each book is a new adventure and a new opportunity for children to discover more about the world—and about themselves as readers. This month, students will remain engaged in the program and excited for their next shipments. The following pages describe the specific books children will receive.

Kindergarten ABC Written & illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers

To learn their ABCs, each day a kindergarten class chooses one letter of the alphabet and does activities that correspond to the letter of the day. On Aa day, the children go outside and look for acorns; on Zz day, they take a field trip to the zoo! Readers will enjoy seeing how many things they can find on each page as they learn words that start with each letter of the alphabet.

A short glossary at the back defines some of the objects featured in the book.

In this twist on a classic tale, Ruby and her three brothers want to cross a little bridge to pick the delicious blueberries growing on the other side of the creek. A bully named Santiago demands a snack before allowing anyone to cross. When Santiago stops Ruby, the very resourceful girl uses her engineering skills to create an alternate way to cross: her own little blue bridge. While busily building, the confident Ruby becomes a role model for Santiago, who slowly changes his attitude.

By the end of the year, her kits are prepared to leave and live secret lives of their own. Back-matter pages share more information about red foxes and define key vocabulary words.

Lety Muñoz is excited to begin summer camp at the Furry Friends Animal Shelter. When the shelter needs a volunteer to act as the “Shelter Scribe” to write animal profiles, Lety jumps at the chance—but so does a boy named Hunter. To settle things, Hunter and Lety hold a competition to determine who gets to be the official Shelter Scribe. But Lety worries that the competition will ruin her chances to adopt Spike. This entertaining novel teaches fourth graders how to set goals and work with others to succeed.

Delivering Justice: W. W. Law and the Fight for Civil Rights Written by Jim Haskins & illustrated by Benny Andrews Meet W. W. Law, the mail carrier who believed that fostering communication between all the people in his community was an important part of his job. He led the Great Savannah Boycott in 1960—which resulted in the city leaders changing unfair laws. Savannah became the first city in the South to end segregation. This biography details the life of an unsung hero who was instrumental in bringing change to his community.

Written & illustrated by Claudia Rueda This playful picture book is based on a traditional Spanish children’s song. As Duck, Bunny, Moose, Beaver, and others play between the trees, Wolf gets dressed—undershirt, pants, T-shirt, socks, and shoes. By the time he has combed his hair and put on his backpack, Wolf is very hungry, and the animals are suddenly very afraid. Luckily, Wolf is hungry for pancakes—his favorite!

From the chameleon’s eyes that can point in different directions to the colossal squid’s eyes that shine in the dark, this informative and humorous book shares what it would be like if kids had some animals’ special eyes and also explains why kids’ human eyes are just the right ones for them!

From a Velociraptor’s sharp, sickle-tipped toes to a T. rex’s giant curved teeth, and from the body armor of an Ankylosaurus to the long neck of a Brachiosaurus, readers can discover what it would be like if they had one of these wild dinosaur parts! Outrageous illustrations accompany photographs and informative text in this terrific introduction to animal traits. Meanwhile, at home, Saraí has outgrown her bike, but that issue becomes an opportunity to practice resourcefulness as she learns how to fix up the bike with her grandfather. A highlighted recipe from the “Around the World Cookbook” is included at the end of the book, so students and their families can test out one of Saraí’s family recipes.
