March 2026 Monthly Newsletter

MARCH 2026 BARSTOW UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BUSD MONTHLY NEWS Included in this issue The Spring Season of Growth and Greatness Information on State Testing Season State Championship Parade Wishing Mrs. Swearingen A Happy Retirement! As the desert landscape begins to bloom around us, I am thrilled to welcome the arrival of spring! March is a beautiful month of transition and growth here at Barstow Unified School District. With the days growing longer and the weather warming up, I can feel a renewed energy in our classrooms and across our campuses. We are officially in the home stretch of the school year, and I am so proud to see our students making every single moment count. Don’t forget to wear your green on Tuesday, March 17! We will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day across the district. For our elementary and middle school families, please keep in mind that March 17 through March 19 are scheduled Minimum Days for Parent-Teacher Conferences. I truly believe this is a "lucky" opportunity for you to connect with our talented educators and celebrate the wonderful progress your children have made so far this year. It is also a bittersweet time for our student-athletes as we wrap up the winter sports season. I want to personally thank our basketball, soccer, and wrestling teams for their incredible dedication and sportsmanship. As those seasons conclude, we are hitting the ground running with Spring Sports! I invite you all to come out and show your Barstow pride by supporting our Aztecs in baseball, softball, track and field, boys tennis, and golf. You can find all the game times and locations on our BUSD Athletics Calendar. As we look ahead, March also marks the beginning of our preparation for State Testing (CAASPP/ELPAC). While the formal testing windows usually extend into April and May, our students are currently using interim assessments to sharpen their skills. To all our parents: you are our best partners in this. You can help your student succeed by ensuring they get plenty of rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time during testing days. We want every student to have the chance to show off exactly what they’ve learned! Finally, I want to share something close to my heart: "Lightbulb Moments." These are the sparks of understanding that make teaching so rewarding—like a third-grader finally mastering a tough multiplication table or a high schooler connecting a historical event to their life today. This month, we are celebrating these "intellectual lights" being turned on in every classroom. I encourage you to ask your student tonight: "What was your lightbulb moment this week?"

Superintendent Deanna Swearingen, Principal Jose Rubio and Lenwood Elementary students enjoyed lunch with the Superintendent. Students gave Mrs. Swearingen insights as to what to “Start, Stop and Continue” doing at Lenwood Elementary while also sharing their “Lightbulb”moments this year.

John Larsen, Director, FMO

Veronica Calderon, Director Nutrition Services

Neale Aulkah, Director, IT

Barstow Unified School District is proud to officially introduce John Larsen, who joined the BUSD family this past November as the Director of Facilities, Maintenance, and Operations (FMO). Bringing a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the district, John has spent his first few months auditing our facilities and getting to know the unique needs of our campuses. As Director, John is responsible for the strategic oversight of all district infrastructure, ensuring that our schools are not only functional and safe but also environments that foster student pride and academic excellence. From long-term construction planning to the immediate needs of daily operations, John’s leadership ensures that the physical foundations of our district remain rock-solid. The FMO department serves as the quiet engine of BUSD, handling everything from the air we breathe in our classrooms to the safety of the playgrounds where our students play. Supporting John in this massive undertaking is Diane Corhn, the Administrative Assistant, who serves as the department’s organizational hub. Diane manages the complex flow of work orders, vendor relations, and scheduling, ensuring that every request is tracked and every technician is where they need to be. Together, John and Diane provide the leadership and coordination necessary to keep a modern school district running at peak performance.

Led by Director Veronica Calderon and Manager Cynthia Lattin Oliveira, BUSD Nutrition Services is a cornerstone of student wellness, providing accessible, nourishing, year-round meals. Key staff, including Stanley Ta'ase and Tammy Trujillo, and delivery drivers Demetra Baldonado, Isaiah Cervantes, and Jose Marquez, ensure fresh, high-quality offerings reach every campus for programs like "Power Fueled Breakfast" and "Grab & Go." The department uses the "Offer vs. Serve" model, emphasizing fresh produce and student choice. At breakfast, students must select at least three items, including a half-cup of fruits or vegetables. For lunch, students must choose three of five components (grains, protein, milk, fruit, and vegetables) but are encouraged to take all five. Interactive topping bars, featuring Pico de Gallo and seasonal vegetables, enhance the dining experience. These efforts reflect impressive reach: by January 2026, Nutrition Services served 127,680 breakfasts, 304,220 lunches, and 13,893 CACFP suppers, providing a year-round nutritional safety net for the Barstow community. Menus and nutritional information are available at barstowschoolcafe.com.

IT Director Neale Aulakh is driving a digital transformation at Barstow Unified School District (BUSD), using technology to boost student achievement and equity. His Technology & Information Services team ensures reliable access. The technical infrastructure is maintained by Network Systems Specialists Steven Buergin and Mark Faul, Senior Network Computer Technician Joshua Collins, Network and Computer Systems Technicians Greg Burcham, Todd Hutton, Randy Benavente, Steven Richardson, and Alex Glaze, and Information Tech Assistant Kyle Jones, guaranteeing secure connectivity. Tammi Harper and Chrystal Hoody manage data, overseeing the Student Information System (SIS) and Infinite Campus for accurate student records. Aulakh fosters collaboration with educators, preparing BUSD for a connected future through technical expertise and human-centric leadership. Aulakh's future focus is integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education for personalized learning, shifting technology from consumption to creation, and automating tasks to free up teacher time for mentorship. This strategy aims to develop future-ready digital citizens. BUSD uses ParentSquare for streamlined communication (mass notifications and direct messaging). Families can also find news and resources on the district website.

Hello Barstow families! As we move through the 2025-2026 school year, it’s time to talk about an important way we check in on our students' progress: State Testing. 💡 Why is it Important for BUSD? Testing is about more than just a score; it’s a tool to help your child thrive. Every year, students across California take part in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Think of these tests like a "check-up" for school. Just like you visit a doctor to make sure your body is growing strong, these tests help us see how your child’s "learning muscles" are developing in subjects like English, Math, and Science. When we combine test results with grades and daily classwork, it gives teachers and families a full picture of what a student has mastered. Then we can use these results to celebrate where students are doing great and find ways they might need extra help. The tests measure skills that are important for success in college and future careers. How You Can Help You are our best partners in learning! You can support your child by: ● Staying Informed - Look for specific dates from your child’s teacher(s) ● Use Resources - Visit the Smart Start website for questions and tips for understanding your child’s report and score

Supporting Every Student: Counseling and Wellness in Barstow Secondary Schools

Our schools focus on the "whole child," spotlighting the professionals dedicated to students' mental, social, and emotional well-being. At Barstow High, Central High, Barstow Junior High, Barstow STEM Academy, and Barstow Intermediate, school counselors are primary student advocates, bridging home and school. They provide academic guidance (course selection, graduation), college/career planning, social-emotional support (friendships, self-esteem), and crisis intervention. To enhance support, specialized Wellness Counselors offer focused mental health care, including individual/group therapy for issues like anxiety or grief. They teach skills like mindfulness and stress management, connect families to outside resources, and maintain on-campus Wellness Centers as "calm-down" spaces. If your child struggles with mood, behavior, or attendance, contact your school’s front office to connect with a School or Wellness Counselor. Together, we ensure every Barstow student feels seen, heard, and supported.

What is Daylight Savings Time & Why do we Observe it?

Dust off your brightest emerald socks and find your favorite green shirt! On Tuesday, March 17th, our district is going green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) advances clocks one hour in warmer months to shift daylight later into the evening, resulting in darker mornings.

The man we celebrate wasn't actually Irish! St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain. Kidnapped at 16 and taken to Ireland, he eventually escaped. After becoming a priest, a dream called him back to Ireland. He spent the rest of his life there as a famous missionary. In 1631, the Church made March 17th an official feast day. Because it falls during Lent, it became a "cheat day," allowing people to break their fast for giant meals and big parties. Massive parades didn't start in Dublin, but in America! In the 1700s, Irish immigrants in cities like Boston and New York started parading to celebrate their roots. Ireland eventually adopted the idea later on. One is for faith, the other is for luck. The shamrock was used to teach the story of the Trinity, but the rare four-leaf clover is a symbol of good fortune. They are very hard to find—your chances are only about 1 in 5,000. 3.141592653… Pi Day ….. March 14, 2026 While most days are just "regular" days, 3.14 is the one time of year when math becomes the life of the party.Whether you’re a math whiz or just here for the snacks, Pi Day is all about celebrating the most famous "never-ending" number in history. But what is Pi? It’s the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The cool part it’s an irrational number, that means it goes on forever without repeating a pattern. Remember math is everywhere. From the wheels on your bike to the orbits of the planets. Pi Day is our chance to appreciate the patterns and mysteries that make our universe so fascinating.

Spring

Forward:

Sunday, March 8 (2:00 AM to 3:00 AM).

The Vernal Equinox is here, marking the official first day of Spring and a shift from "winter hibernation" to "springtime hustle" across the district. The "Muddy" Season: Recess can be muddy. An extra pair of socks in backpacks is suggested. Outdoor Learning: Warmer temperatures mean more "fresh air classrooms," like reading under a tree or nature walks for art. Did You Know? On the first day of Spring, the Earth is tilted in a way that it isn't leaning toward or away from the Sun. Because of this, daytime and nighttime are almost exactly the same length (12 hours each) all over the world! That’s why we call it an equinox, which is a fancy word that means "equal night." But why does it exist? Benjamin Franklin jokingly suggested it; serious proposals came from George Hudson and William Willett. During WWI Germany was the first to adopt DST(1916) to save coal; the U.S. and Britain soon followed. The U.S. standardized start/end dates with the Uniform Time Act of 1966, however there are some that don’t participate. Around 40% of countries use DST. In the U.S., Arizona (except Navajo Nation) and Hawaii remain on Standard Time year-round. The idea that DST was created for farmers is a myth; farmers historically opposed it.

“If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.” -Albert Einstein ( who was actually born on Pi day – 3.14.1879)

NEW Board Policy & Administrative Regulation 1445: Response to Immigration Enforcement

The Barstow Unified School District Governing Board is committed to student success and a welcoming environment for all families, regardless of immigration status. BUSD is introducing NEW Board Policy and Administrative Regulation 1445, "Response to Immigration Enforcement," to comply with NEW LAW (AB 495, 2025). This law requires policy updates by March 1, 2026, using language equivalent to the California Attorney General’s model policy. BUSD approved and adopted this policy and regulation at the February 24, 2026, Board meeting. Under these new guidelines, district staff are prohibited from collecting information on students' or families' immigration status. The district will deny enforcement agency requests for student education records or employee files unless required by law (e.g., a valid judicial warrant). The Superintendent will report enforcement requests to the Board and provide annual parent notifications that student information is not released for immigration purposes without consent. Campus and transportation safety is a top priority. Immigration enforcement officers seeking access to students or nonpublic school areas (including buses) must first provide a valid judicial warrant or court order. Staff must not obstruct officers but must immediately notify the Superintendent and consult legal counsel. Families are urged to keep emergency contact information current. If a parent or guardian is detained or deported, students will only be released to designated emergency contacts or individuals with a caregiver’s authorization affidavit. BUSD is committed to supporting every student by following these state-mandated procedures.

Parent & Guardian Quick Guide Keeping your student's information current is vital. Manage records and access district information here.

Privacy & Safety FAQs

Only if they have a judicial warrant or court order signed by a judge. Will the school share my child’s records? No, student records are kept private and are not shared for immigration enforcement without a warrant or consent. What happens if I can’t pick up my child? Students will only be released to people listed on your emergency card, so please keep that updated!

How to Update Your Emergency Card We need your most current contact information on file. ●

Update: Home address, phone numbers, and emergency contacts. A parent or guardian must visit the school’s front office or Central Enrollment Center with a valid photo ID to complete changes.

When and how to contact the School Board You should contact the school board when you have concerns or questions about the district’s policies, budget, school programs, or safety issues. It's also a good idea to reach out if you want to participate in public meetings, share ideas, or provide feedback about your child’s school. For specific personal issues, like student discipline or individual school matters, it's often best to first contact the school or district administration.

Leading with Heart: BUSD Honors Retiring Superintendent Deanna Swearingen Every summer is special because, as teachers and school staff, we celebrate the graduation of a class of high school seniors and welcome a new class of kindergarten students. It is a tradition that everyone is used to. But for BUSD Superintendent Deanna Swearingen, the start of the summer break will be different. Mrs. Swearingen will retire at the end of June 2026, beginning a summer break unlike any she has had before. Over 25 years ago, Deanna Swearingen started her career in education as a classroom teacher. As a 4th-grade teacher, she found her home in guiding students on their academic journey, from “learning to read” to “reading to lead.” Even as superintendent, her favorite place was the classroom, where she monitored students' progress. Her focus on literacy was evident this year, as she led the partnership between BUSD and San Bernardino County to improve literacy practices for Barstow students. But her leadership and personality made her a candidate for advancement into educational management. After leaving the classroom, Mrs. Swearingen served as the Chief Business Officer for Baker Valley, Helendale, and Barstow Unified School District at different times. She first joined Barstow Unified in February of 2020. 3 years later, she was selected for the top job in BUSD and has served as Superintendent since February of 2023. In her 6 years as an executive for Barstow Unified, Mrs. Swearingen has overseen the completion of the Wellness Center & Pupil Services office complex, the construction of the community walking track, the expansion of Transitional Kindergarten, the reconfiguration of grade spans, the re-opening of Barstow Intermediate School, the expansion of Barstow STEM Academy, the increase of personnel dedicated to ensuring safety and security of schools, expansion of the office responsible for responding to concerns and complaints, providing ongoing salary increases to classified and certified staff, all while maintaining positive fiscal certifications year-after-year.

Interim Superintendent Succession Plan

As we look toward the future of our district, the Board of Trustees has outlined a clear and structured path for leadership through the 2025-2026 Interim Superintendent Succession Plan. This process ensures that our schools remain stable and focused on student success during this transition period Interim: Temporary role until a permanent replacement is found. Candidate Selection through an Internal Cabinet Search

Interviews (Two Rounds)

Round 1 (March 2-6): Screening Panel interviews candidates. Round 2 (March 9-13): The Board of Trustees will conduct final interviews at a special meeting.

Phase 3: Final Approval

Recommendation for the interim position will be voted on and approved at the March 24, 2026, board meeting. The Board is committed to a transparent process involving various stakeholders.

Board of Trustees President Leonard Williams said. “Her leadership, dedication, and steady guidance have made a meaningful and lasting impact on our schools and, most importantly, on the children we serve.” Her time as a teacher and administrator has always been dedicated to students.

BUSD wishes Mrs. Swearingen all the best in her well-earned retirement, and we thank her for her more than 25 years of dedicated service to Barstow and the field of education.

Public Comment T he board meeting is a business meeting of the board held in a public forum. This is not a town hall meeting with the board. There is time during the meeting to receive public comment from citizens to present problems or questions they feel the board should discuss. Individuals are encouraged to address the full board, not individual Board members. The law prohibits the Board from taking action on items not on the agenda. Request to speak cards should be filled out in advance and presented to the Superintendent's Executive Assistant. Instructions for submitting remote public comment can be found on our website www.busdk12.com under the tab “Board of Trustees.”

John Larsen, Director, FMO

Veronica Calderon, Director Nutrition Services

Neale Aulkah, Director, IT

Apoyando a
