BARSTOW UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HAPPENINGS

MARCH 2026

What is Daylight Savings Time & Why do we Observe it?

Dust off your brightest emerald socks and find your favorite green shirt! On Tuesday, March 17th, our district is going green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) advances clocks one hour in warmer months to shift daylight later into the evening, resulting in darker mornings.

The man we celebrate wasn't actually Irish! St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain. Kidnapped at 16 and taken to Ireland, he eventually escaped. After becoming a priest, a dream called him back to Ireland. He spent the rest of his life there as a famous missionary. In 1631, the Church made March 17th an official feast day. Because it falls during Lent, it became a "cheat day," allowing people to break their fast for giant meals and big parties. Massive parades didn't start in Dublin, but in America! In the 1700s, Irish immigrants in cities like Boston and New York started parading to celebrate their roots. Ireland eventually adopted the idea later on. One is for faith, the other is for luck. The shamrock was used to teach the story of the Trinity, but the rare four-leaf clover is a symbol of good fortune. They are very hard to find—your chances are only about 1 in 5,000. 3.141592653… Pi Day ….. March 14, 2026 While most days are just "regular" days, 3.14 is the one time of year when math becomes the life of the party.Whether you’re a math whiz or just here for the snacks, Pi Day is all about celebrating the most famous "never-ending" number in history. But what is Pi? It’s the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The cool part it’s an irrational number, that means it goes on forever without repeating a pattern. Remember math is everywhere. From the wheels on your bike to the orbits of the planets. Pi Day is our chance to appreciate the patterns and mysteries that make our universe so fascinating.

Spring

Forward:

Sunday, March 8 (2:00 AM to 3:00 AM).

The Vernal Equinox is here, marking the official first day of Spring and a shift from "winter hibernation" to "springtime hustle" across the district. The "Muddy" Season: Recess can be muddy. An extra pair of socks in backpacks is suggested. Outdoor Learning: Warmer temperatures mean more "fresh air classrooms," like reading under a tree or nature walks for art. Did You Know? On the first day of Spring, the Earth is tilted in a way that it isn't leaning toward or away from the Sun. Because of this, daytime and nighttime are almost exactly the same length (12 hours each) all over the world! That’s why we call it an equinox, which is a fancy word that means "equal night." But why does it exist? Benjamin Franklin jokingly suggested it; serious proposals came from George Hudson and William Willett. During WWI Germany was the first to adopt DST(1916) to save coal; the U.S. and Britain soon followed. The U.S. standardized start/end dates with the Uniform Time Act of 1966, however there are some that don’t participate. Around 40% of countries use DST. In the U.S., Arizona (except Navajo Nation) and Hawaii remain on Standard Time year-round. The idea that DST was created for farmers is a myth; farmers historically opposed it.

“If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.” -Albert Einstein ( who was actually born on Pi day – 3.14.1879)
