rounded by ungodly people. But there Is no substitute for the quiet time in the secret place with the Lord, « . MARCH 15, 1942 THE CHRISTIAN DISCIPLINE cOF LIFE 1 T hessalonians 5 :5-8, 16-23 By Wilda A. Miller Introduction As we think of the Christian life, we ■know fit is not a thing to be followed at random and lived in a haphazard manner, sometimes with great zeal ousness and again in careless indif ference. -On the contrary, to live the Christian life is supremely important, and it demands the strength and cour age of a disciplined life. -Were we left to our own inclinations, we would fall far short of God’s standard (Rom. 7:18, 19; Isa.. 55:8, 9). In 1 Corinthians* 9:24-27, we have Paul’s picture of himself running the face of life so that he might obtain the prize. As he thus ran, his life was constantly being brought into con formity. with God’s own pattern. He stripped himself of his own plans and desires that he might fulfill the pur pose that the Lord had for him, even as the runner strips himself of every weight and hindrance that he might win his goal. Paul, in turn, again and again ad monishes Timothy to be satisfied with nothing less than living a life that measures ug to the high standard that God expects of His own children., As Timothy took heed Unto himself and ’his ministry arid was careful about ■his daily walk, he was able to live an exemplary Christian life, influencing others for Christ. For Those Who Hove Topics I. THE REASON FOR THE CHRISTIAN DISCIPLINE OF LIFE (1 Thess. 5:5). 1. That we may walk as children of the Light and be blameless in the midst of a perverse world (Phil. 2:15, 16). 2. That the light of our lives may glorify our Father in heaven (Matt. 5:16). II. THE REQUIREMENTS IN THE CHRISTIAN DISCIPLINE OF LIFE (1 Thess. 5:6-8). 1 . Watch”—in prayer and thanks giving to avoid entering into tempta tion. It requires a constant vigilance

to walk acceptably before God (Mk. 14:38; Col. 4:2; 2 Tim. 4:5). We need to guard against - Satants snatching away our belief in Christ and His gospel (2 Tim. 1:13, 14). 2. “Be sober” ,
