withstand him. He is on business for his King and coolly claims His power to support him.—George M. Blackett. 5. Before Me—Closed Doors “To him that knocketh it shall be opened” (Matt. 7:8). Before me, just closed doors—why, I know not! He .promised to provide; has He for- . got? I cannot seem to find the proper key; O God, why do the doors stay locked to me? He speaks so soft and low—“Why don’t you pray?” And in His question, He has shown the way. No door is closed when men but inter cede; • And he who prays is he who-shall be freed. —Selected. 6. Concerning Ourselves “For it is God which worketh ,in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13). It is not enough for us to find a fascinating interest in the study of God’s dealings with others. Dtir great concern should be in discovering His will and His purpose concerning our selves. For He has a plan for each and all. We must not conclude that because He does not single us out for prominent positions in His great vine yard, there is not some corner in it which He is calling us to fill. . . . The world is the richer today be cause of the loving service of Onesiph- orus to the aged Paul in his prison cell in Rome.—S. E. B. Burrow. 7. Footsteps Behind “I will fear no evil: for thou art with me” (Psa. 23:4). Fearful I listened; Terror comes by night, Or dull Despair walks boldly on his way. Stern foes are these, who with resist less might \ Draw near to overthrow my faith this day. Then softly through the stillness, “Turn thine eyes,” And lo, in shining'raiment, fair to see, Two angels stretched kind hands all tenderwise— •’Twas Goodness, yea, and Mercy fol lowed me. —Fay Inchfawn. 8. Our Claim for His Faith “Have the faith of God” (Mk. 11:22, margin).
1. All the Days of My Life “As thy days, so shall thy strength be” (Deut. 33:25). I know not what this year may hold for me, but I know that strength will be given me, according to my need . . If one day this year some heavy- burden shall be laid, upon me, I knpw that the Lord will msCke me strong to bear it.' If some day of bitter sorrow, I know I shall not be left to go through it unaided. And if jt be that one day this year I find death stand ing before me, then even for the last conflict strength will be given. So Ishall I prove that as is my day so my strength shall be.—Francis B. James. 2. Survival “Take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in/your hearts” (2 Pet. 1:19). When the moon has curved a thousand times " Across the velvet dark, Who will remember these bursting bombs, . Their futile flare and spark, Or the pigmy rulers who strut and fume? Shadows will cover them— But across the night' will glow, un changed, The Star of Bethlehem! —Leslie Savage Clark. 3. God's Love Picture “For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church” (Eph. 5:29). The Father-love of God nourisheth by showing us what He would have us be and do. But the Mother-love of God cherisheth by keeping us depend ing upon Him to be and do that very thing through us; and by shielding us from discipline too hard for us to bear, i Nourisheth and cherisheth—a never-ending p r e s e n t tense! Who would not be a member of Christ’s body!—Aphra White. 4. The "A ll" of Power “I can do all things through Christ which strengthbneth mb” (Phil. 4:13/. The believer taps a source of power in Christ, that the w o r l d knows nothing about. When the precious Book is believed and acted on, the believer enters on a life of pov/er and accomplishment undreamed of before. In the name of the Lord, Paul breaks through into heathen territory, and makes conquests for his Lord. He knows no limitations; no powders can resist him successfully; nothing can
