road to collapse and depression, must have the restraint that these meas ures or some of them afford. All our varied interest groups will have to be big enough to submit to this one defi nite purpose. The problem is essen tially Complex "and puzzling. A Chris tian observes the greed ;of men, real izes his personal temptation to self ishness, reads God’s Word, and rec ognizes the truth of such words as Jeremiah 17:9, 10, “The heart is de ceitful above all things, and desper ately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart.” Uncle Sam anust release some of his wheat supply. Our supply in gov ernment hands is the largest on rec ord. Food is more abundant than ever; record crops are with us. Infla tion does not thrive when an abun dant food supply is distributed. Sane policies engaged in by Washington can do wonders here. Policing and regulating prices is a very complex business. The law of supply and demànd only works when there are free forces, and these are not with us today. “Weak-kneed, piecemeal, half - hearted” „ measures abound and must be replaced with stern measures. Every reader has' a pocketbook interest. in the outcome. Clamping a ceiling over all prices! Rents, wages, commission fees, inter est rates—in short, every item of com merce or service! What a job! Then, too,'we must constantly look for ways and means to reach incomes, reduce purchasing power, prevent larg er corporation earnings. with higher taxes, see to it that there are lower personal income tax . exemptions for Mr. and Mrs. Public, and plug up thé loopholes whenever they show up. At the same time, let it be remembered that whatever measures are taken will be difficult to enforce during the'con fusion and stress of war-time effort. How we wish we were as sure about the outcome of all of this serious eco nomic side of things as we are of the record which God has given 'us re garding everlasting life! When one wades through the morass of econom ics, twisted as they are today, it is indeed refreshing to come back to a Bible passage Such as John 5:24, “Ver ily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my ' word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condem nation; but is passed from death unto life.” Thank God for the “safety, cer tainty, and 'enjoyment” belonging to the Bible Christian. In addition to holding on to this rich heritage, let Us have renewed zeal in the spreading of the “good news.”

equally sincere and, when need be, frank, realism viewed through the Christian interpretation of life. Be cause of the subject matter covered, the book may not be as w ell.suited to young adolescents as are certain other novels in this field that are less outspoken in their treatment. Older young people and adults, however, will doubtless find the book stimulat ing. 250 pages. Augsburg Pub. House, Minneapolis, Minn. Cloth. Price $1.50. Care of God’s Fruit Trees By H. A. Warm-hearted evangelistic m e s - sages, freely illustrated by incidents from the author’s, own and others’ experiences in soul-winning, make this collection of revival sermons both soul-searching and refreshing. Dr. Campbell is pastor of the First Bap tist Church of Columbia, S. C. His presentation of the plan of salvation is without equivocation, and the lost ness of those Who refuse Christ is as clearly stated as is the plea to receive Him as Saviour. 153 pages. Broadman Pr e s s , Nashville, Tenn. Cloth. Price $1.00. With power, sincerity, and skill, the author jof the widely read Silver Trumpet here deals with a group of problems bearing upon 'the life of Gordon Maxwell. Gordon, a football star, suddenly found himself financially unable to complete his course at “Wharton” Col lege, the counterpart of the well- known Wheaton College at Wheaton, 111. His life in succeeding months is complicated by his relationships with his selfish brother, the misunderstood Julia Higgins, and the aesthete-:play- boy, Arthur HaverilL To Arthur he presents thé claims of Christ force fully in rather unusual circumstances. Evidently the author’s purpose is to apply the principles employed in the modern novel to deal with real life, not by sordid realism, but by an Fair Are the Meadows By J. Wesley Ingles
