A mere child, Alexander, unexpectedly becomes a witness to pivotal events: his inaugural Passover and the agonizing death of Jesus. Fatefully, he stumbles upon Satan's insidious plot to subvert the Church and, consequently, global faith. Alone in his dreadful knowledge of this demonic conspiracy, the boy finds himself shielded by the omnipotent Archangel Michael. Thus begins Alexander's extraordinary odyssey; a perilous journey through time, hurtling him into the twenty- first century on a desperate mission to sound the alarm for a world utterly unprepared for the encroaching darkness. Satan's insidious machinations, chronicled in Evil Deception , delve into the dark history of his cunning strategies. From the moment humanity succumbed to sin, his relentless pursuit of God's chosen offspring has intensified. The crucifixion, however, marked a horrifying escalation; a pivotal moment that paved the way for the annihilation of the Church and the catastrophic ascension of the Antichrist, heralding the apocalypse.

You is a poetic memoir that dares readers to look inward. Spanning over five decades of writing, Vane Lashua blends personal essays, political reflections, and lyrical meditations into a deeply intimate exploration of identity, memory, and meaning. Inspired by a formative encounter with W.H. Auden’s poetry, Lashua invites us to confront the “overfamiliar dense companion” within—ourselves. Across 75 chapters, the book meanders through childhood recollections, lost love, friendships, patriotism, and the quiet revelations found in nature and everyday life. Whether deconstructing gravity as a metaphor for connection or racing to catch a train in a moment of suburban chaos, Lashua’s voice is both whimsical and profound. You is not a traditional memoir—it’s a mirror, a reckoning, and a love letter to the unpredictable beauty of being human.

EDITOR’S NOTE
E EACH HAVE OUR STORIES TO TELL ABOUT our love affair with books; otherwise, we would not be here flipping the pages of this magazine, reading the articles, and attending the highly anticipated Taipei International Book Exhibition 202 6 as well as the prestigious London Book Fair 202 6 . Whether the old-school print books or the e-books of the present era, our relationship with the written word has not dwindled in the least. If anything, it’s getting stronger in that whenever and wherever our fingers feel like scratching the itch to read a good story or two, we don’t have to rush home or swing by the nearest library to grab hold of the most borrowed paperback or hardcover books from the shelves. Access to psychological thriller, action suspense, and adventure must-reads is just right under our nose. So are our favorite best-selling autobiographies of Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela, and the life story of Mother Teresa. Books can be our best friends. As a guest editor of this edition and as a certified introvert, I can proudly and loudly say that for my own experience. While my so-called friends are busy minding their own business away from me and partying like animals outside, here I am, burying myself in the comforting presence of my print books when the need of a human blanket arises, if not immersed in my favorite topics on the internet. This edition is a celebration of our love for books and our passion for reading. And that’s why we’re all here—joining forces, not just rubbing elbows with fellow bookworms, at the Taipei International Book Exhibition 202 6 and at the prestigious London Book Fair 202 6 —to promote reading not just as a hobby but, ultimately, as a cure for mental health problems. An 88-year-old Catholic priest from Minnesota fell in church and required surgery to stabilize a broken neck. During his recovery in a rehabilitation facility, he did not dwell on his bad luck or why he is so clumsy, but instead reflected, during a sleepless night that became a night of prayer, on how blessed his life has been. This memoir, Incredibly Blessed: The Life Story of a Boy from the Farm, grew out of those reflections. Father Brown acknowledged the good education he received in the minor and major seminaries. In the minor seminary he had a good liberal arts education, and after two years in the major seminary he earned a BA in philosophy. In the final years at the major seminary he completed the four years of theology required for ordination. He reflected on the fact that he has visited places that many priests wish they could see but never do, such as Rome, Lourdes, Assisi and the Holy Land, as well as exotic places like the Galapagos, the Antarctic Peninsula and Easter Island. He has been to 22 countries in all, something few people can say, except maybe a travel writer or a secretary of state. The memoir becomes a travelogue as he describes in detail many of these places, along with almost 300 photographs. Besides all this, he has been privileged to serve the Lord and the Church as a priest for 64 years. Reflecting on this that sleepless night, he realized how blessed his life has been. As a boy growing up on the farm, he could never have imagined he would have such a meaningful life. In the Epilogue Father Brown names many persons to whom he is grateful. After almost two pages in which he expresses his gratitude, he writes: “I am grateful to the Lord for the innumerable times I have celebrated Mass, preached His Word, forgiven sins in His name, and commended a faithful soul to Him at journey’s end.” The Epilogue and the book conclude in this way: “I hope with confident assurance that I will hear these words when He calls me home: ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant… Come, share your Master’s joy.’” (Mt 5:23)

LET’S GET DIGITAL WITH JANUSZ BAGINSKI Living in today’s digital world can mean differently to those born into this writer’s as well as my subject’s generation than the younger generation—the millennials, the Gen Z, and the Gen Alpha.
A: Digital solutions have enabled many groups of people to live a more comfortable and happier life compared to the past. However, new challenges appeared. For example, it is easier to get access to confidential data. First and foremost, the symbol of changes is the closure of a number of bank branches because account holders do not need to physically be present to do things. Many services can be offered over the phone or through a video link. TFL got rid of paper bus tickets and the payment can be done by using either a debit/credit card or an oyster card. As a result, journeys are hassle-free and expedient. Furthermore, everybody has access to the timetable on the phone; therefore, it is much easier
dictionaries and paperback thesauri and the lessons I learned from the books on my shelves in the corner of my living room back in the day have never escaped me. On the other hand, much of the same amount of all the things I’ve seen on the internet have left me searching for them again and again when the need to remember them arises. Who better to share more about his personal experiences than Janusz Baginski, a professional linguist, one of London’s and neighboring cities’ most sought-after courtroom translators, and one of my favorite cousins-in-law? Q: What do you think is the impact of the digital age on today’s society?
HERE’S NO SOFT-PEDALLING the fact that gone, albeit not yet totally, are those days where one had to register and present one’s ID card upon entry to the library and use a card catalog to locate a specific book— or move mountains, cross the bridge, and sail the seven seas which breaks the bank to see one’s significant other, be interviewed and get hired by a potential employer, report to one’s workplace and perform one’s tasks, walk in to a government agency to process important documents or a private office for a business transaction, drive to a faraway coffee shop or dine in a fancy restaurant for a meeting or two, hop from one mall to another to see the latest fashion trends, or commute to the airline company sales office to buy flight tickets and queue up early to check in at the airport. While I’m grateful to the present day for the easy access to information which is just right under my nose or at my fingertip, I can’t help feeling nostalgic on the good old days where I was always caught burying myself in paperbacks, hardcovers, print magazines, and newspapers all day. Thanks to the generation I was born into, I can say that I’m both lucky and blessed to have experienced the best of both worlds. In a nutshell, most, if not all, of the words and phrases I memorized from my hardbound T

where you live and without the need to relocate. Services are offered online or at least jobs are offered remotely. Next, digital applications allow us to do what one could even not think of. A mobile can serve as source of information and on the device, we can store and get access to unlimited data thanks to cloud. Documents on paper are less frequently used. Finally, nowadays, humans are more empowered and equal when relying on digital solutions. In the past, somebody could have been judged by their presentation: the better you looked, the more you could get. This might have put off a lot of people from attempting to even go outside. At present, when using an application on the phone, one doesn’t have to worry about what they look like and what impression they make. They can simply concentrate on the target which is, thinking of me being overweight, magical. The downside of reliance on digital applications is that there is, and always has been, a social margin making use of human gullibility. Fraudsters approach innocent people with offers that may lead to disclosure of confidential information that can be processed to access their bank accounts. According to UK Finance *, in 2022 £ 1.2
suffice to run a family/social life and do a business. Mind you, last week I went to City of London Magistrates’ Court as a linguist to assist the judge, the prosecutor and the defendant. Physically, in the magnificent historic building next to the Bank of England there was only a security man, the judge and me. The defendant was produced remotely and they could be seen on the monitor. The office wasn’t staffed at all. It felt like an abandoned building, yet such an important affair in the interest of the public took place there, courtesy of new digital solutions. Q: What are the best three pros and the worst three cons of today’s digital age? And why? A: The good thing about today’s digital world is that it is easier to communicate, get in touch with others and function in community; a lot of hassles have disappeared. There is no need to travel to the other part of the country to have a nice chat with somebody close to your heart as long as you have access to WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger or any other similar programme. You can apply for a job advertised by a company with its headquarters far away from
to plan a trip from a particular bus stop, which also can have its own digital timetable to the satisfaction of travellers. Unfortunately, there are setbacks. For example, mobile applications can be targeted by fraudsters who may as well steal confidential data that can be down the line taken advantage of by organised criminals. Victims of such crimes are often traumatised and they have to offer a therapeutic support to fully recover from the impact of the life-changing event. Q: With the advent of social media, messaging applications, and video conferencing, what is your personal and professional take on the way we communicate and interact with others has changed? A: At present, it would be extremely difficult to function in society without a mobile whose applications enable us to interact with others and often to engage in business activities. Video conferences are commonplace at courts and in communication between counsel and their client. Parties can also participate in hearings remotely, and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home was a standard. Whatever you think of accomplishing, there is always either a portal or an application you are bound to utilize. Forget about going to an office or even calling a service: AI will guide you and provide you with the sought-after support or advice. Consequently, a mobile may turn out to be an item that preoccupies our attention. On tube trains and buses, people used to read newspapers and books or even chat with their companions; currently, they tend to hold and cherish a mobile in front of their tense faces expecting to get as if a life-changing message. You’d better not interfere in the precious relationship between a human and their digital Big Brother. In the past, face-to-face contact was inevitable both in private life and when doing business; one looked forward to getting together with family members or friends or at work one was judged by what communication skills and what job-related abilities one had. Everything has dramatically changed. As a result, a contact through Skype or being aided by an AI programme would

whether the text is on paper or if it is on a digital device. Having said that, a paper version is definitively easier to manoeuvre as the reader can flip pages quickly and return to the original page on the spot, whereas a digital format allows the reader to find information by using one click. However, it entails a different skill when browsing the text. The screen does not always show the entire page and it can only be seen partially, especially when an application on a mobile is used. Besides, books are stored on a bookshelf and they are a reminder of what we have as well as being a piece of furniture. Whoever visits us they know what we are into. On the other hand, digital texts are not so personal and they do not play the same additional role as printed books and they do not make a decor of our room. Q: What do you want to tell your children or all children in general about the difference between the experience of reading print books and the experience of reading e-books? A: Bearing in mind that we live in a digital age, I would humbly encourage them read texts they have access to, which are appropriate, either on their tablet or on paper so that they can learn more about interesting topics and get used to reading in their free time. It should be mentioned that bookshops and libraries have not disappeared yet and it is worth going to a library where one can sit down with an interesting book and where various events are also organised. For example, stories are read out by a member or staff or an invited guest. In this way, children are introduced paper books, which have a number of qualities that cannot be replicated electronically such as the texture of pages, their material or how the book is handled and kept: normally on a bookshelf. Furthermore, it is safer to carry a book than a device with the book and other, sometimes important, data. Q: If you caught a young student reading a print book in the middle of everybody reading e-books in the library or at a coffee shop, what would
notion. On the other hand, a paper book appears to be less risky and reading might be more expedient, during a short journey on a crowded bus it seems safer and more convenient to grab a book than pull out a device, switch it on and wait until it is fully operational. Then probably you would need to find the item you are interested in. Besides, an electronic device can break down and all its data might be gone in one second. I am sorry to say that but the curse of modern times is social inequality: the gap between the rich and the poor has widened, consequently, among other problems, thefts thrive and whoever is in possession of a valuable item must watch out; a laps of concentration may lead to the loss of a precious electronic belonging. Q: As a professional linguist and a professional translator who grew up reading print books, are you happy with the fact that most people nowadays are reading e-books rather than print books? Explain. A: Yes, I am thrilled whenever I can see somebody reading a text in the shape of a book as this indicates that the person is learning and wants to increase their knowledge apart from having a good time; actually, it does not matter

Her desire for this book is that as she shares what God has done in her life, it will be an encouragement and help to those experiencing similar situations. John 10:10 continues to be her theme verse, as it was in her devotionals, "The thief comes to steal, to kill and destroy; I am come that you might have life; and that you might have it more abundantly." Q: What advice would you like to give today’s young people who want to improve their writing and reading skills? A: Young people are in this privileged situation that they attend school where their learned teachers provide them with necessary training to improve their writing and reading skills. Drawing on my experience, I would say that motivation is the main factor in somebody’s development no matter what they pursue. A desire to be a better reader or writer kick-starts dedication and commitment towards achieving setup goals. It is always beneficial if one connects working on their literacy skills with their personal experience, therefore attending after school clubs or being a member. A club not necessarily linked directly with writing or reading would help a lot with broadening knowledge and expressing themselves on specific issues comprehensively, coherently and cohesively. Of course, there should be a forum which would let one demonstrate their final product. To start with, social media may be a good option, and community colleges offer a range of courses during which essays are submitted. Further down the line, attending conferences and preparing a presentation would help build confidence and professional stance; one can also write for journals and magazines that look for writers. Depending on the progress, one can always find a way out by choosing the right offer on the road to becoming a much better writer or reader to their own satisfaction and to the benefit of the community. Good writers are prone to be good communicators who are able to sort out issue which would otherwise seem to be too difficult to deal with. The best lawyers are those who talk and write to the point and who never leave their work halfway through as they are entirely committed to their role. The same can be said about successful writers. you tell him or her? A: I would praise them for the awareness of advantages of a print book like convenience in regards to carrying it, easy access to it without switching on the device and waiting for the data to start working. Furthermore, I would assume the person has a bookshelf at home and collects interesting reads, which would allow us to engage in a promising conversation. Sometimes it is even hard to tell what one does when they look at an electronic device and it would not evoke many associations with reading as compared to a hard copy. Given it is obvious one is reading an e-book, I would fully justify this option in light of modern development and trends, paying attention to the benefits of reading in itself. Q: Do you think the literacy rate of most people everywhere has dwindled since advent of the digital age? A: A mobile is owned by a vast majority of people nowadays, according to statista. com * only two percent of UK households do not have a mobile. Appointments are normally arranged by using an
application or at least a text message is sent out in order to confirm its date, time and place. Well, even on the way to the venue there is no need to wait for the bus too long because its arrival time can be checked on the phone. The accessibility to information in all fields of life means that the demand for literacy has gone up recently. It enables one to function hassle- free in modern society. It should be stated that pupils are still taught by traditional methods and their use of electronic devices is still strictly monitored. On the one hand, they are exposed to the multitude of messages on electronic devices, TV or in the street; on the other hand, traditional paper books are used in teaching literacy skills, and only at certain age they can have unlimited access to online information or be able to have their own account in social media. It appears that the digital advancement and technological progress encourage young people to obtain literacy skills more quickly as well as providing more learning opportunities. Many portals offer—often free of charge—educational materials that can be shared in class.

In Butterfield Road , Patrick Earl Dwyer masterfully blends history and storytelling to reveal “how the West was really won.” Through the intertwined journeys of the Magoffins and the Dwyers—two Irish emigrant families—the novel traces their struggles and triumphs during the Texas fight for independence from Mexico, the Mexican-American War, and the relentless march toward America’s Manifest Destiny. This is not just a tale of battles and politics; it is a story of romance, resilience, and the human spirit. From the dusty trails of Texas to the promise of California, readers witness the courage required to fight tyranny and oppression, the heartbreak of loss, and the enduring hope for freedom and survival. Dwyer’s narrative is both historically grounded and emotionally compelling, weaving real events and fictionalized characters into a vivid tapestry of triumph over tragedy. Butterfield Road is an age-old story at its core—one that reminds us that liberty is never easily won, but always worth the struggle.

Sermons With Insight is a rich and reflective collection of homilies from Roland Zimany, a former philosophy professor and Lutheran pastor whose voice blends theological depth with intellectual clarity. Drawing from the liturgical calendar, Zimany explores themes of faith, grace, and spiritual renewal through sermons that span Advent to Pentecost and beyond. Each message is grounded in scripture yet elevated by cultural references, philosophical nuance, and real-life examples that make timeless truths feel freshly relevant. Rather than preaching from a place of dogma, Zimany invites readers into thoughtful dialogue—challenging them to think, feel, and grow in their relationship with God. Whether unpacking the “bondage of the will” or encouraging openness to divine newness, his sermons are both soul-stirring and intellectually engaging. This collection is ideal for readers seeking spiritual depth, biblical insight, and a compassionate voice that speaks to both heart and mind.
