The Power Of Listening (CONT’D FROM PAGE 46)
Under Roof Separators... ...Made Simple
But what if we are the bad drivers or poor listeners? My suggestion would be to consider that possibility and ded- icate yourself to becoming more adept at these valuable skills, though driving instruction isn’t really part of this arti- cle so focus more on your listening skills than your driving skills, at least for now. If you are already a great listener, aspire to be an even better listener than you already are. Why Am I Not A Better Listener? Typically, we are not taught to be good listeners. High schools and colleges have debate teams and focus a lot of attention on powerful delivery and cogent argument but don’t emphasize teaching how to pay deep and focused attention to what others say as much as they do in teach- ing how to defend your position or drive your argument home. Interesting side note: The International Encyclopedia of Interpersonal Communication is a big book - over 2000 pages. In it, there is almost no space given to listening; How often do we get caught up in developing our re- sponse to someone before we’ve actually heard what they were trying to say? Generally, we tend to put in a lot more effort trying to be clear in the expression of our thoughts than we do paying close attention to the words being spo- only one reference in the whole book.
