waiting to support our efforts to make connections with others, solve problems and exert positive influence. It is very important to give this great listener within us more time to express itself. Practice giving your time and effort to hear and understand what others are saying and you will be rewarded. How Can We Become Better Listeners? Listening is a skill. The only way to get better at it is to practice: • Try not to think of poor listening as a character flaw – in others or in you. Think of it as something that, if import- ant enough to you, is a skill you can improve. • Be curious about others. Allow yourself to relax and let your mind focus on the other person • Try not to assume that you already understand. Even if you have heard the story before, try to find something new in it. • Trust yourself to remember what you want to say and give your attention over to the other party. If, because you were listening to the other party so intently, you lose the thread of your previous thoughts, that’s ok. Those thoughts/ideas will come back to you later and, in the meantime, through your focused listening, you will have made the connection with the other party deeper, which, hopefully, will be more important than whatever it is you were going to say. If this is difficult for you (it’s difficult for just about everyone) then, if pos- sible, prepare yourself for important meetings/interac- tions by writing out your thoughts ahead of time. Learn to quiet your own mind and focus on the words others speak to you. They will appreciate you for it.
