King's Business - 1911-05

5. Another title was Prophet. Verse 40. It was a high honor to be God's prophet and it was foretold of Him that He was to be a prophet.like unto Moses. Acts 3:22. And He was a great prophet, Luke 7:16, but He was more than a prophet, He was a King. 6. Some yielded to Him the title of Christ. Verse 26. He was God's anointed. To this Peter bore testimony. Mark 8:29. God hath made this same Jesus both Lord and Christ. Acts 2:36. So hath it ever been. With different eyes have the people seen the Christ of God. He failed to meet the expectation of the selfish and worldly Jews. They expected Him to be high and lifted up and He . was lowly and meek. They looked for Him to be rich and He was poor. They supposed He would associate Himself with the noble and He found friendship with the publicans and harlots. They were looking for a spectacu- lar kingdom and they found a man without repute with a few followers. • A Great Promise. This is a remarkable "promise. He is speaking of the fulness of the Holy Spirit which was to be given to them that believe. The Spirit had not yet been given in His fulness. The Lord must pay the penalty of. sin, must die. on the Crrvs3, must go in resurrection power to the glory, before He could send the Spirit. This was God's order. . The Spirit was to come as a witness to the fact of Christ's glorifi- cation. Jno. 15:26; 16:7. He was to come to empower the. believers for service. Acts 1:8.» He was to fill them with the life of Christ. Gal. S:22, 23; Eph. 5:9. All of the Sweetness and power of the Christ was to be imparted by thé Holy Spirit. There is great fulness for those ^ h o believe. The life of God will flow spontaneously as a living stream. His mouth shall be as a well of life, Prov. 10:11, and as a well- spring of wisdom, a flowing brook, Prov. 18:4. It will be well to meditate upon these verses and ask ourselves the question, "Do I believe?" If so, will not this oromisé of the Lord be verified In my experience? We can be filled with Spirit if we so desire. Eph. 5:18. but there must be faith. One must not only come, but he must drink. Jno. 4:10; 6:35; Psa. 36:8, 9; Psa. 42:2; Psa. 63:1.. The glory of God was manifested In and through Him. Whoever follows the Lord Jesus will walk in the light. The only con- dition is following. Whoever follows his own inclinations; whoever does his own will walks in dark- ness. The unbeliever is in darkness. Eph. 5:S: living in ' sin. The devil. is the ruler of darkness, EDh. 6:12: Rev. 16:10. The Jews to whom the Lord was speaking were, children of the devil, verse 38, and were walking In dark- ness, verse 12: Eph. 2:2; Prov. 4:19. They judged after the flesh, verse 15. They were In bondage to sin, verse 34. They were re- jecting the true lieht and sought to put Him to death, verse 37. " He warned them that unless they followed

of tWs class today. They call Him the best man that ever lived, the Ideal . man, etc. The Lord rejects such testimony. To the young man who called him Good Master, He answered, "Why called thou me good; there is none good but One, that is God." Luke 18:19. It was equivalent to saying: "Why don't you call me God?" The Lord absolutely repudiates the titles men give to Him, who refuse to bow to Him as Lord. Matt. 7:22. 3. To some He was a deceiver. Verse 12. This was one of the charges brought against Him by the Jews after His death. Matt. 27:63. Jesus said of Himself, "I am the truth." Jno. 14:8. 4. Others said He had a demon. Verse 20. This was blasphemous. They, afterwards accused Him of being possessed. Matt. 10:25. . So" they charged John the Baptist. Matt, 11:18. So Festus accused Paul. Acts 26:24. A Great Day. The Feast of the Taber- nacle was the third of the great feasts of the Jews. Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacles. It was the closing feast of the year. . It commemorated the wilderness journeyings and the people lived in booths, made from branches of trees. The Passover Feast was typical of the work of Christ upon the Cross. Pentecost was fulfilled on the day that the Spirit- descended and formed the Church. The feast of Tabernacles will be Commemorated when we are with the Lord in the next age and remember our pilgrim journey. 1' Kings 8:65, 66. ' A Great Invitation. Come and drink. It was in the midst of the fe^pt when the water brought from the pool ot~ Siloam was being poured out as a libation, that Jesus ut- tered these memorable words. The great throng must have been startled. Jesus is the Water of Life as well as the Bread of Life. The human soijl has a thirst which Can never be quenched until it has drank at the well of life. How gracious is the invitation, "Come and drink." Come as Vou are; come now. "Whosoever will, let him come and take of the Water of Life freely." Rev. 22:17. There is no money and no price, Isa. 55:1, THE PROPHECY OF THE SPIRIT. Jno. 7:37-52. JESUS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Jno. 8:12-59. The message of Jesus in this passage is of light. He had alreadv declared Himself to be the Bread of Life, 6:48, and the Water of Life, 7:37. Now He asserts that He is the Light of Life, verse 12. He is the Light of the World. The true light, Jno. 1:9. The Feast of Tabernacles was being cele- brated. The two great chandeliers were lighted each night during the feast and these furnished the theme for this address. The Lord Jesus was the lamp stand. The Holy Spirit within Him was the light. As the pillar of fire led the children of Israel through the Wilderness, so now the Spirit was to lead through the life of Christ in whom He dwelt.
