INVESTIGATIVE AND SUPPORT COMMAND

Community Programs Division

The Community Programs Division recruits citizen volunteers to participate in the Code Blue programs, and works with the Patrol Divisions to support these efforts. Code Blue began over twenty-five years ago and has enjoyed tremendous success. The Code Blue programs are the foundation of positive police and citizen partnerships that make the FWPD a national leader in community policing. Citizens on Patrol is the critical component of the Code Blue programs, that empowers citizen volunteers, equipped with police radios, to patrol neighborhoods throughout the city, and to act as the eyes

and ears of the Department by reporting suspicious activities. They partner with the Neighborhood Patrol Officers (NPOs) and Crime Prevention Specialists (CPS) to support the overall police department crime reduction initiative. Other highly successful Code Blue elements includes the Ministers Against Crime (MAC) and Clergy and Police Alliance (CAPA). These faith-based partnerships utilize the services of proven community leaders to help provide legitimacy for the police deparment. It is an ongoing Departmental goal to increase participation in all our successful and highly valued volunteer programs. The Youth Services and Crime Intervention Sections are also part of Community Programs Division. The Youth section is divided into two Units; the School Resource Unit (SRU) and Youth Services. School Resource Officers (SROs) work collaboratively with school administrators to ensure a safe environment in the schools using efforts like crime prevention education, interventions with students, and enforcement of the law. In addition to providing security, the SROs utilze their unique platforms to improve relations between the police and school-aged youth of Fort Worth. The SRU plans to exploit this opportunity by providing classroom teaching and interactions. To better serve our student population, over the next two years all SROs will obtain an instructor certification through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, as well as their Mental Health Peace Officer certificate. The SROs also partner with Clayton YES! and participate in Fort Worth ISD-sponsored after school programs by providing educational presentations and assisting with homework. SROs will also expand their involvement in after school activities such as the Police Athletic League, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Teen Police Academy.
