Fort Worth Police Department Strategic Plan

 Downtown WiFi : A WiFi mesh is already active in a portion of downtown Fort Worth. This infrastructure provides high-speed connectivity to FWPD cameras enabling the police department to monitor events near the Fort Worth Convention Center, Sundance Square, and other high traffic areas downtown. Cameras – Future Projects  Expansion of Camera Network : The expansion of the FWPD surveillance camera network is a legitimate force multiplier. The RTCC accepts camera feeds, where officer process and communicate real-time information to officers responding to citywide incidents. Additionally, expansion in this area leverages the use of technology to fight and deter crime. This project will begin in FY17 with 192 cameras and $1,085,000 in Police Department and Neighborhood Services grant funds.

 In-Car Video System Replacement : The existing patrol vehicle in-car video system is DVD-based, and most already surpassed their warranties and recommended lifespans. A transition to the latest generation of in-car video technology allows the department to harness the wireless transmission of video, and no longer rely on/purchase DVDs or other portable media, to store and download critical evidentiary information. It also allows FWPD to capitalize upon the latest advancements in video technology, clarity, and camera equipment. The department submitted a proposal for initial funding for FY17, but additional funding is required to complete the full transition to wireless in-car video (see Strategic Direction 4: Technology Development and Infrastructure Expansion. Goal 1: Replace aging and out-of-date technology).  Body Camera Expansion : The FY17 budget provides for the purchase of 400 additional body cameras to fulfill the commitment of outfitting all uniformed/front line patrol officers with cameras. The FWPD will continue to purchase the remaining amount of systems required to equip every new officer with a camera as they graduate from the academy. The newest body camera model is anticipated to be available in January. The department currently has 793 cameras active.
