FISHING POLES, DIRT ROADS, AND THE JOY OF DOING NOTHING Being a Kid Was the Original Adventure, and I’m Trying to Get Back There

Growing up in a small Iowa town of about 5,000 people, I didn’t know what I didn’t have, and I didn’t care. I had a bike, a core group of five or six buddies, and a daily mission: have as much fun as possible before supper. No phones, no schedule, and no drama. Just pure freedom, and one question that never stopped running through my head: What’s next? That was the rhythm of life. For a few weeks, we were baseball pros, playing all day at the school field, sandwiches stuffed in backpacks. Then, fishing fever hit, and we spent every daylight hour by the water. After that? We had a tennis craze. Then basketball. Then football. We’d cycle through every sport, every game, every excuse to be outside, laughing, competing, trying, failing, and trying again. Looking back, I don’t think of

vacations or toys — I think of freedom and fun. I think of riding my bike without a destination, and never needing one. So, when I saw that July 8 was Be a Kid Again Day, something hit me. I love where I am in life, but I can’t deny the nostalgia that says, “Man, those moments were special.” Being a kid meant living fully in the moment. No regrets from yesterday. No anxiety about tomorrow. Just now. What are we doing now? What’s next? Because here’s the thing: When you’re a kid, you’re thinking about the next game, snack, and stupid idea your friend dares you to try. And there’s something freeing about that.

was until I was in college. But I wasn’t missing out. I didn’t know to miss it! There wasn’t social media back then, no highlight reels showing me what other kids had. I had my bike, my buddies, and the sun overhead. That was more than enough. That’s what I miss and what I try to channel once a year when I host a mini reunion with my childhood crew. They come over, we hang out, and 90% of our time is spent laughing about the dumb, hilarious, sometimes brilliant stuff we did growing up. It’s storytelling therapy. It’s grounding. And it’s one of the few times in the year when I feel completely weightless, like I’m back on that bike, flying down the gravel road, wondering what adventure is around the corner. So, if you’re looking for a way to celebrate Be a Kid Again Day, here’s my advice: reconnect. Call your old friends. Sit around and tell stories. Remember who you were when the only thing that mattered was what you would do for fun that day. You might not be able to relive those exact experiences, but you can reconnect with that fearless, fun-seeking, totally present version of yourself. And maybe, just maybe, let him guide you to whatever comes next. –Darin Garman

As adults, we get so caught up in the past and future that we forget how to just exist. To be

present, playful, and a little reckless. To not take everything so seriously. And that’s what I miss most, the looseness of it all. The joy of getting muddy, the thrill of chasing a ball down a gravel road, the simplicity of being happy with whatever we had, which, let me tell you, was not much. I lived with my grandparents in a small two-bedroom house. We didn’t have money. I didn’t go on vacation. I didn’t even know what a vacation

I Admit I Was Wrong! IT’S NOT TOO LATE — BUT IT WILL BE SOON

I don’t know how many times I have been wrong about investments. It’s funny when someone asks, “Have you had any investments that tanked?” and my answer surprises them: “Heck yes!” When I look back at some of the mistakes I made because of plain stupidity, thinking I was “really smart,” not paying attention to the details, or just bad luck, I can rattle off more than a handful that were not fun and lost money. The truth is that when you do this long enough, you never reach perfection. However, the amount of money lost in investment losers pales compared to what I lost over the years by NOT taking advantage of a good investment or missing out on a good investment. I can name a dozen easy investments that would have been very, very good, but for some reason (usually fear), I decided not to go through with them. At the time, it seemed like the right thing to do. Now, looking back, I should have taken advantage of those. Not smart … It’s like the old timer I ran into at the convenience store. He was driving a pick-up truck very similar to one I used to have, an older Ford F150 4 X 2. So, I told him I admired his truck, and he looked good driving it. Well, one thing led to another, and pretty soon we are talking about real estate. He then told me he had an opportunity to buy a farm in SE Iowa about 40 years ago for less than $500 an acre. That was a lot of money 40 years ago. Of course, he decided not to buy because he thought it was overpriced and was a huge stretch for him. He could have done it, but decided against it because he was afraid of what might happen.

Well, you probably know where I am going with his story ...

He said he was visiting a friend in a town near this particular farm last summer. So, he and his buddy decided to take a Sunday drive and check out the area, and of course, they had to drive by the farm. After driving around for a while, they were having a problem finding it, but they finally did, only this time, as history has a way of repeating itself sometimes, the farm had a for sale sign on it. Curious, this old timer calls the real estate agent listed on the FOR SALE sign and asks how much they want for the lot. $9,800 an acre! Just do the math right now in your head! The old timer could not believe it. Not that this farm was priced at $9,800 an acre, but his real issue was: “Why in the world did I not buy that property?” Why else would he tell me, a complete stranger, that story? Because it bothers him 40 years later! I tell you this because I see this with apartments as we head toward the second half of 2025. This is where you will want (at least some of) your money. I’m not saying you will multiply your money 50-fold in the future, but you do not want to be like the old timer years later, wishing you had not missed out. It would be too bad and just another “missed out on” story. So, do the following …

Have a great day!

3 NATIONAL PARKS THAT ARE WORTH THE DETOUR

Whenever you hear a friend or family member say they’re going to take a road trip to visit some of America’s most beautiful national parks, they usually plan to visit the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Great Smoky Mountains, or Yosemite. These national parks consistently attract millions of visitors every year, but they’re far from the only must-see national parks in the country. There are 429 protected national sites within the U.S., and 63 of those have obtained the official “national park” designation in their names. (The other labels are battlefields, historic sites, monuments, recreation areas, etc.)

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH DAKOTA Exploring a cave might not be your first thought when considering national parks, but Wind Cave is a one-of-a-kind experience. It’s one of the longest and most complex caves in the world and has many unique features, such as frostwork, cave popcorn, and boxwork, creating unique sights with every step. Once you head back outside, a beautiful mixed-grass prairie, home to bison, prairie dogs, and more, will greet you.

If you want to experience the beauty of America without the crowds, consider visiting these destinations during your next vacation!
