Bringing the Latest Orthotic/ Prosthetic Techniques to You!

When was the last time you upgraded to a new cell phone? It’s a small thing, but it’s always exciting to check out the latest bells and whistles and discover the different ways your phone can make your life easier. You may be wondering what cell phones have to do with our orthotic and prosthetic services. Well, new technology isn’t just for cell phones

Roger Howard, CPO, Director

— it’s a crucial part of the orthotic/prosthetic field, too. Exciting things are happening in the world of orthotics and prosthetics — and at Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics, we pride ourselves on bringing that new technology back to you! We want to explore some of the ways our team has embraced technology and collaboration to improve your experience as our patient. The world is more connected than ever, and we make full use of those connections to avoid hiccups and road bumps during the process of measuring, designing, and fitting your orthosis or prosthesis. Using Technology to Work as a Team Last month, our certified prosthetist-orthotist Sara Remley attended a gathering of orthotists and prosthetists from all over New York state. One of the big themes of the meeting was collaboration, both with our patients and other healthcare providers. We were excited about this, as we’ve always strived to incorporate our patients’ entire healthcare team into the process. We’ve found that it’s one of the best ways to get your device to you as quickly and easily as possible. And if we can find new ways to streamline the process–that’s even better. While we’re definitely excited to explore some of the techniques Sara learned about at the meeting, we actually wanted to take some time today to share with you some of the methods we’re already using to make your life a little easier: • Speaking of Cell Phones: Did you know we’re in constant communication with other providers on your care team, like your doctor or physical therapist? We’ll text them pictures or questions to ensure we have all the information we need in a timely manner. • Helpful Hint Documentation: Designing a prosthetic or orthotic device is a complicated process — and it’s one that doctors aren’t necessarily well-versed in. That’s one reason we provide detailed documentation on our website: to ensure your physician sends along all necessary documentation required by insurance. That means you get your device a little faster. • Collaborating With Your Care Team: We collaborate with your other healthcare providers to ensure that you get well-rounded support through every step of the process. We communicate effectively with your care team by keeping any files, pictures, and videos needed to document your case organized in our electronic medical record system. And we work with your insurance providers to make sure that your claims can be approved.

Moving Into the Future At Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics, we work hard to stay up-to-date on the latest techniques and technology. We offer the latest in state-of-the-art prosthetic devices, such as the Empower prosthetic foot, which uses microprocessor technology to create a more realistic gait. Here are some of the benefits of microprocessor technologies in prosthetics and orthotics: • Improved Balance and Stability Microprocessor-controlled prosthetics can help users maintain their balance on uneven terrain or when walking at different speeds. • Increased Gait Symmetry These devices can help users achieve a more natural gait, reducing pain and fatigue. • Reduced Risk of Falls By improving balance and stability, microprocessor-controlled prosthetics can help to reduce the risk of falls. • Increased Range of Motion Some microprocessor-controlled prosthetics allow users to perform activities that would be difficult or impossible with a traditional prosthetic, such as running or jumping. We also use digital technology in the measurement and design process, which ensures a much more accurate and comfortable fit. Bringing The Future To You We’re always looking to bring more advanced techniques back to our little corner of New York. After all the great talks about provider collaboration at the meeting we attended, we’re excited to try some of these new techniques as well. Ultimately, we want to make things easier for you, our patients. Whether you need a brand-new prosthesis or a custom-fitted orthosis, we’ll apply the latest technology and techniques to get you fitted up and ready to live your life. PATIENT SUCCESS STORY

Success Story — Matthew J. “I used Howard Orthopedic for foot insoles. After an initial scan of my foot my insoles arrived two weeks later where the staff had me in within a few days to try out and test fit the insoles. They ensured the insoles fit comfortably in the shoes I provided and even made on the spot adjustments to provide a more comfortable feel. I now feel like I'm walking on a pillow and will enjoy standing and walking for longer hours in my work boots. Highly recommended and easy to work with!”
