MORMONISM—CAN IT STAND INVESTIGATION? (Continued from Page 17)
C o m m e n t : The above lengthy quota tions deserve one’s close investigation, because many interesting things are here recorded. In the History of Jo seph Smith, the Prophet, (History of the Church, volume 1, page 12) we read, “He (Moroni, a messenger from God) said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an ac count of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the sources from whence they sprang. He also said that the full ness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it . . . ” And in the Doc trine and Covenants, section 20, verses 8 and 9, “—And gave him power from on high, by the means which were be fore prepared, to translate the Book of Mormon; ‘Which contains a record of a fallen people, and the fulness of ' the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gen tiles and to the Jews also’ ;” Moroni, a messenger direct from God, declared to Joseph Smith that the Book of Mormon contained the fulness of the everlasting gospel. And, according to Joseph Smith, in a revelation direct from Jesus Christ (D & C Section 20), the Book of Mor mon contains the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles and to the Jews also. We quote from Webster’s Dictionary: Fulness — fullness — the state of be ing full in any sense of the word.” Although it is impossible to add to the fulness of the everlasting gospel, we read in Doctrine and Covenants, (see quotation A.) “ For behold, I reveal unto you a new and an everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned.” The above quotation is from a revela tion supposed to have been given ’ through Joseph Smith, from the Lord. Recorded in the Doctrine and Cove nants, section 132. The revelation con cerns plurality of wives (polygamy) and states that it is “ a new and an everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damn ed.” Is it any wonder that the so- called Mormon fundamentalists still believe in practicing polygamy? Although the revelation was re corded by the church July 12, 1843, the publication of the revelation was not made until August 28, 1852, at a church conference, by Orson Pratt. Twenty-three years after the revela tion, and fourteen years after the pub lication of the revelation, during which time polygamy was practiced, the 1866 Edition of the Doctrine and Covenants stated that polygamy was a crime (See quotation B.) God grant that the dear Mormon peo ple might see the many contradictions and discrepancies in their own books and put their faith wholly in the One Infallible Book — God’s Word, the Holy Bible!
MY TESTIMONY I was a member of the Mormon Church until one day I appeared at a Bishops’ Court and requested that my name as a member be removed from the records of the Church. Approximately eight years before this time, I was discussing the Bible with a friend who was a Christian. I told him that I believed the Bible, but I confessed I did not believe some of the verses of Scripture he read, because the doctrine was contrary to the teachings of the Mormon Church. My friend asked why I confessed faith in the Bible, yet did not believe these verses of Scripture we were discussing. I quoted the eighth article, of the Ar ticles of Faith, of the Mormon Church to prove that a person had to be very careful concerning the Bible and its teachings, “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. . . ” I thank God for the challenge that confronted me when my friend requested that I show him the part of the Bible that was mistranslated, as inferred by this quotation from the eighth article of faith. Although I could not supply this in formation, I accepted the challenge, be cause I surmised that it would be very easy to obtain. After numerous inquiries and requests with those who had authority, I began to doubt that such information existed. It was also revealing and astonishing that these men who held the Melchizedek priesthood and who were called of God to administer and preach the gospel (ac cording to Mormon belief) knew so very little about the Bible. I was provoked to study. I began to learn about the translations of the Bible.1 The information was obtained from re liable and authoritative sources, not from a religious denomination. A beautiful picture of the preservation of God’s Word began to unfold before me. “ Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35). I found that God’s Word, the Holy Bible, was not mistrans lated. I began to study the Bible, and these verses that friends, who were Christians, had read or quoted to me, now became a challenge. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph. 2:8, 9). “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regener ation, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on vs abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour ” (Titus 8: 5, 6).
