GETTING TO KNOW PRESTON COLLEGE

WHAT'S AVAILABLE AT PRESTON COLLEGE?

CAREERS GUIDANCE & INFORMATION Leaving high school is an exciting time, especially if you know what career you want to follow and how to get there - but if you don’t, it can be a little daunting. That’s where we can help. Whatever stage you’re at on your career journey (or even if you haven’t started yet) our experienced Careers & Progression Team will support you in making the right choices about your future. Our advisors are trained in providing high quality careers information, advice and guidance to all students. You can chat with them any time during College hours in the Career Zone located on the College High Street, email guidance@preston.ac.uk or call 01772 225774 . We also have Career Coach , an online platform which can help you find a career path that suits you, build an impressive CV and find local job vacancies.

At Preston College, you can choose to study technical courses that lead to further study or employment, or an apprenticeship which develops your skills in the workplace and can lead to Degree and Higher Level Apprenticeships. Our courses are developed alongside employers and are designed to give you flexibility and options for your education and journey to employment. For example, you could start your studies on a full-time college course and transfer onto an apprenticeship to 'earn while you learn', whilst still gaining the same qualification. Alternatively, you may continue on your full-time course and progress directly to higher level study either at Preston College or university.

FACILITIES & LEARNING At Preston College there are a wide range of learning facilities and resources which allow you to put the technical skills you learn into practice. Facilities include industry-standard studios, theatres, libraries, science labs, workshops, hair and beauty salons, PC suites, digital technology and software. See page 58 for a selection of our facilities or visit us at our next open event for a tour. MATHS & ENGLISH Maths and English skills are an important part of everyday life and employers are looking for people with these skills. That’s why it is a Government requirement that if you leave school without a grade 4 (or above) you will have to study these subjects as part of your college programme. MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION When making the important decision about what to study at college, it’s worth taking the time to research what qualifications are needed for your future career. Some professions do require Higher Level Qualifications, but university is not always the only way to get them. You can study Higher Level Qualifications at Preston College in a range of subjects either in the classroom or in the workplace. Alternatively, you could gain your higher-level qualifications through a degree or higher apprenticeship. Remember, if you are unsure on which route to take, speak to one of our careers advisors who will be able to talk you through your options. You can contact our Recruitment and Careers Team by emailing guidance@preston.ac.uk or calling 01772 225774 and ask to speak with one of our dedicated Careers Advisors.

See page 65 for more information on progression routes.

£1.4 MILLION DIGITAL SUITE RENOVATION In August 2024, Preston College unveiled the transformative £1.4 million Digital Suite which has turned the former media, music, and recording spaces into cutting-edge digital suites, creative design studios, and a specialised gaming room. This new environment will support T Level courses across a range of digital and creative disciplines, including media production, games design, digital production, accounting, and digital design and development. Simon Nixon, Principal and Chief Executive says, “We are thrilled to have completed the refurbishment of the digital suites and be able to open the doors to this new facility. “ Jack has completed his placement at Millennium Engineering and has enjoyed the manufacturing process of engineering. Jack’s employer has been impressed with his work ethic and have seen what he his capable of, resulting in an offer of employment. If you are willing to put the time in and work hard T Levels would be a good option for you to choose when you leave school. I got on well with everyone at my work placement and was offered a job as a engineer working on the machines.

Much like A Levels and University degrees - once you pass your T Level, you will receive a nationally recognised certificate with the overall grade you achieved (pass, merit, distinction or distinction*). These certificates will also provide information on what you’ve learned during your T Level, helping you improve your opportunities within skilled employment or higher education.
