Step Three: Turn to the Tried and True

“My habit of making bad decisions was very strong and intact,” Kristian says. “During those seven years, I swung and I missed a lot. At the very end of 2016, we were again on the brink of eviction and all the terribleness we had been through before.” As though the hopefulness of the holidays was mocking him, Kristian recalls waking up one day with no income and feeling so deeply that he had failed his family. Again. In the back of his mind was that referral business he had worked on eight years prior: Melaleuca. Though Kristian and Kristin hadn’t put much effort into building their Melaleuca business for almost a decade, they had received a monthly commission check from Melaleuca every month without fail since September 2008. Though the checks weren’t much—about enough to cover their product order—the Hoenickes couldn’t ignore the fact that Melaleuca had delivered on its promise of repeat income. “Despite my distraction and lack of any kind of follow-up, it just kept paying,” Kristian says. “So I found myself thinking again and again, ‘What if I really followed through with Melaleuca?’” From there, Kristian and Kristin grew their business to Senior Director. Still, there were distractions. Kristian began an education company that did not take off. “Kristin called me to my senses,” he says. “I had come to a place where I could learn, grow, and be better. I knew that if I committed to Melaleuca, we could have an entirely different life experience. We had never had stability. We could finally be okay.” The Hoenickes made Melaleuca their priority in 2018, and, as they predicted, their lives have transformed. Step Four: Be Faithful to the Fundamentals Once you’ve completed the first three steps, you’re ready to make some serious headway in creating the life you’ve always wanted. It will take work and dedication, especially to get things going. “Early on, we sacrificed a lot of work-life balance,” Kristin says. Kristian agrees. “I gave Melaleuca an obsession-level of focus. But that’s what it took to get us away from the terrible cliff we were on.” Kristian has developed

If you could be remembered for one thing, what would it be?

Kristin: That I loved people the way God loves people. I have a long way to go to get there! Kristian: I hope people will say that I was good at making people kind of wake up, stop, and think.
