Reader, we beseech you to turn away from every persuasion and influence of the many BLOOD-LESS religious cults of the present day, and embrace with all your heart the only divinely ap pointed, provision, found in God’s Christ, the mercy seat, “ through faith in His blood.” (Rom. 3:25.)
of thousands thronging annually to see the monster burning candle at so much per head; and in due time will also surely come the claim that the candle miraculously lights itself. The motive presumably is stated as the establishment of a memorial for Caruso— famous son of the Church, and perhaps also as a means to light his soul out of purgatory; if this latter is the case, then the implication is ap palling, viz.: that there will be the progress of only one day a year for nearly twcf millenniums. What a hor rible contemplation! Poor Caruso! Kept in purgatory 1800 years as a suc cessful money-getter! Whatever view of the project is taken the Saviour’s words come to mind: “ The children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.” (Luke 16:8). Rome is wise, but her scheming is of the earth earthy; the little intermittent light that will shine from the Caruso candle will not be sufficient to walk by, but will only reveal the darkness of her own devious ways. In the bright light of the judgment that is on the way all her scheming will be seen as confusion dire, while she and her works and pomp and cunning will sink into an endless perdition. — Rev. Charles C. Cook. PRAYING AND PLANNING We plan and plan; then pray That God may bless our plan. So runs our dark and doubtful way,, That scarce shall lead unto the day— So runs the life of man! But, hearken! God saith,; “ Pray!” And He will show His plan, And lead us in His shining way Which leadeth on to perfect day Each God-surrendered man! —-Jessie Andrews.
CARUSO GIANT candle that will be lighted 24 hours a year for 1800 years is made in New York as a memorial to
Caruso of the heavenly voice. “ This candle will be set up perma nently in the Church of Our Lady of Pompeii, at Naples, Italy. . “ It would be interesting, to come back to earth in the year 3721, when the giant candle is lit for the last time, and find out whether any one will be able to tell who Caruso was, without consulting dusty records. “ Caruso was a great man, but 1800 years is a long time. “ Alexander the Great conquered the earth 2200 years ago. But now he is not as famous as the leader of Alex ander’s Ragtime Band.’’ The above is an editorial clipped from a Buffalo daily. What a clever, bold, unique, far- reaching schemer is Rome! Think of mortgaging the future for 1800 years-— a period almost as long as the Christian era! What an adept is Rome at clap-trap! Any humbuggery that will create inter est, attract attention and make talk is eagerly used to draw the crowd, and above all, to produce filthy lucre; for1 that Rome does not design the scheme as a money-maker is inconceivable; it would be the one exception in the great circle of her activities. When does she not charge, beg, demand and seize to fill }ier coffers? So we can see in imagination the tens
