Why Valentine’s Day is Better with Family & Friends
by Ben Haworth, MADD Teen influencer With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the whirlwind of romance-themed expressions—heart-shaped boxes of candy, Valentine’s Day cards, a dinner with someone special. However, Valentine’s Day does not need to be focused solely on romance. The holiday is about celebrating all kinds of love, including the love we have for our friends, family, and most importantly, ourselves. If we take a moment to step away from the commercial side of the holiday, we can seize the opportunity to express love to the people who support and care for us year-round. This year, I plan to find unique ways to celebrate those individuals who have made a huge impact on my life. Whether it’s writing Valentine's Day cards to the individuals who mean the most to me, or calling someone who I haven’t spoken to in a while, just to let them know I’m thinking of them, these types of gestures
remind us that love doesn’t always have to be romantic. Getting together with a group of friends for dinner to celebrate, playing a board game or watching a movie with your parents—even spending quality time with your siblings, are opportunities to not only make yourself

feel good on Valentine’s Day, but also show real love and appreciation. There are so many ways we can express our love without romance. And while being in a romantic relationship is a wonderful thing, it is always important to show some real love for yourself! On Valentine’s Day, find something you enjoy or have been waiting for that special occasion to try and just do it. Binge-watch the show you’ve been dying to see, go on a long bike ride or a hike with a friend, or take yourself out for that special meal or dessert. Redefining a holiday is an adventure. This Valentine’s Day, I will enjoy and celebrate the love I already have in my life. Recognizing and appreciating those that support and love us can make all the difference in the world. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness:
by Willow Roberts, MADD Teen Influencer
In honor of Random Acts of Kindness Week, happening February 14th-20th, here are a list of ideas for random acts of kindness: February14th: Call a friend you haven’t seen in awhile to catch up. Surprise your neighbors with a batch of cookies or a treat. Buy the order of the person behind you. February15th: Let someone go in front of you in a line. Donate old clothes, blankets, or toys. Write a kind message and leave it for a friend, family member, or even a stranger.

Send an encouraging message to someone you love. Offer to carry someone’s heavy bags or their groceries.
February 18th: Help someone with directions if they’re lost. Volunteer at a local shelter or charity. Offer to babysit for a family member or friend.
February 19th: Send a surprise care package for someone in need. Bring in snacks and treats for classmates or coworkers. Share an inspiring or uplifting post on social media. February 20th: Offer to help a neighbor with yard or house work. Write a positive review for a local business or restaurant. Leave a kind comment on someone’s post.
