CIPP Payroll: need to know 2018-2019

Current legislation does not allow HMRC to obtain information for debt collection purposes or where a company, usually created in contrived circumstances, has no tax liability. A change that is discussed here would allow HMRC to access information that was reasonably required for all its tax functions, including the collection of tax debt.

The consultation will run until 2 October 2018.

The policy team will be reviewing the consultation in full and if deemed necessary will invite your opinions via an electronic survey.

HM Revenue and Customs secures record £605.8 billion in revenue 23 July 2018

HMRC’s Annual Report and Accounts for 2017-18 show that it secured a record £605.8 billion in revenue during 2017- 18 and also protected more than £30 billion that would otherwise have been lost to error and fraud.

The Annual Report and Accounts sets out HMRC’s latest performance results and shows that HMRC is continuing to deliver for UK taxpayers, securing a record revenue during 2017-18 and protected billions of pounds - money that can now be used to fund hospitals, schools and other services that tax payers pay for and the public all rely on.

The Tax Assurance Commissioner’s Report (included within the Annual Report) details information on how HMRC resolved tax disputes in 2017/18, and how it dealt with the largest and most sensitive cases.

The Charter Annual Report explains how the Charter rights and obligations that set out what customers expect from HMRC, and what it expects from them, helping to strengthen its commitment to deliver excellent customer service.

The Annual Report’s top results include:

Customer service HMRC received almost 47 million phone calls in 2017-18. Answered customers were put through to speak to an adviser within the five minute average that it is funded for. While some customers got through in just a few seconds, others had to wait longer at busy times and the government is therefore investing in ways to provide a more consistent service at all times, to all customers. Digitally-advanced tax authority In 2015 HMRC said that its goal was to become the world’s most digitally-advanced tax authority - an ambition that it still holds and is on track to deliver. About 15 million people have accessed their online Personal Tax Account since it was launched and more than 93% of people filed their Self Assessment return online this year – a record number. HMRC has also introduced new ways to be contacted, such as through webchat.
