Automatic Enrolment

CIPP webcast –Back to Basics for Automatic Enrolment 31 July 2017

Automatic enrolment may be business as usual for many but implementation is still an issue for all the employers who started PAYE on or after October 2012 whose staging dates run up to February 2018.

It feels like a very long time since implementing Automatic Enrolment (AE) began to be an issue for employers and their agents and advisors. In fact, it is nearly five years since the duties came into force in October 2012. For employers of all sizes who were around at the time, it is no longer an issue: staging dates have passed, workforces have been assessed and compliance declarations submitted. They are very much in the ‘business as usual’ point, with many larger employers also having completed their first three-year re-enrolment duties. Naturally, the focus of many AE training courses, articles and other support has also moved on. It is easy to forget, then, that implementation is still an issue for all the employers who started PAYE on or after 1 October 2012: they will have staging dates between May 2017 and February 2018. And for any employer starting on or after 1 October 2017, the duties apply immediately.

The CIPP has produced a webcast that goes back to basics on the AE duties and how to implement them, for the benefit of new employers and the agents and advisors that look after them.

NEST consults on changes to scheme rules 20 November 2017

NEST (National Employment Savings Trust) Corporation has launched a consultation on proposed changes to the scheme’s Rules.

The consultation proposes changes that, when taken together with proposed changes to the NEST Order, will allow NEST to offer contractual enrolment as a means of joining the scheme. The consultation will also set out proposed changes to how NEST manages death benefits. This is something NEST is looking at again, in light of the restrictions on the scheme being removed earlier this year. The foreword in the consultation provides a concise description of the proposals. NEST welcomes your comments, and asks that all responses reach NEST Corporation by the closing date of 29 December 2017. The consultation on NEST’s Rules can be found on NEST’s website.

The Department for Work and Pensions has launched a consultation on changes to the NEST Order. This consultation can be found on GOV.UK (closes 27 November 2017).
