MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Lately, I’ve had a lot on my mind — I worry I won’t be re - elected in April, though that’s highly unlikely. Nevertheless, I am concerned about my legacy. Like all great presidents, I feel I must leave my mark. I suppose having my face sculpted on Mount Rushmore is too much. So, let’s start small — with the ICL building. What do you think? I like it! And I don’t think it’s unreasonable for UTU to rename the General Classroom Building to THE WARREN STUCKI GENERAL CLASSROOM BUILDING . A Ō er that, I have my sights set on THE DIXIE CENTER . Don’t panic and don’t send nasty
emails. This picture was photoshopped — for now... Enough of my rambling. Now, I’d like to dedicate the rest of this message to our replacement for the irreplaceable Dr. Rob Kramer — ICL’s newly hired director, Cynthia Holman - Schmidt. For once, I’m not going to be snide. Honestly, how can anyone say anything bad about Cyndi? Cynthia was born and raised in SLC and graduated from West High School (much to everyone’s surprise). She started her career with Mountain Bell as a long - distance operator — back when cord boards and headsets were standard. Over more than 30 years with the phone
company, Cyndi has held many positions, including working in the engineering department and laboring out- doors, installing and repairing cables. History records her as the first female cable foreman in our 14 - state region. (Cyndi in work overalls, I‘d love to see that!) When Cyndi transferred to accounts management in 2005, she and her husband, Butch, moved to St. George and immediately fell in love with the community. After retiring in 2017, Cynthia quickly got involved with ICL. That same year, encouraged by Pat Sapio, she taught her first class — Discovering The Tao Te Ching. Since then, she has taught at least one or two courses each semester, generously sharing her curiosity, warmth, and passion for lifelong learning. Since joining ICL, Cyndi has served as ICL Council Secretary, on the Social Commit- tee, and, in 2025 (after Doug Bowen stepped down), she took on the role of Tour Director for our popular Bus Tours. Also, for the last 2 years, she has worked closely with Director Kramer on class scheduling. Reportedly, he claims , “any and all snafus are hers!” (Sorry, folks, I couldn’t resist.) Outside of ICL, Cyndi enjoys golf and pickleball and volunteers as a facilitator for a Family Support Group at a local treatment center, o ff ering support to those with loved ones experiencing ac- Ɵ ve addic Ɵ on or in recovery. She is honored and excited for her new role as ICL Execu Ɵ ve Director, knowing full well she’s stepping into Kramer’s huge shoes. She is deeply grateful (as we all are) that he has le Ō ICL in such excellent condi Ɵ on. Lastly, she hopes she doesn’t blow it! She won’t! We are lucky to have Cyndi, and she deserves our total support. When she asks for help, let’s all help — when she asks for volunteers, let’s all volunteer. Stay tuned and see you in class! ~ Dr. Warren Stucki, ICL President Cynthia Holman - Schmidt

ICL MINI - MED SCHOOL
THE AVERAGE DOCTOR SPENDS 16 MINUTES PER PATIENT Common pa Ɵ ent comments, “I didn’t get a chance to ask ques Ɵ ons” or, “ What did they say?” or , “ I s Ɵ ll don’t understand.” Not so with the ICL/Intermountain Health’s MINI - MED SCHOOL! Here, you can spend a full hour with a doctor, who will discuss health problems that are of interest to you, then give you Ɵ me to ask ques Ɵ ons. It’s very unlikely you will leave saying, “Gee, I s Ɵ ll don’t understand...” Our philosophy – Health educa Ɵ on should empower patients to become advocates for their own health care and make informed decisions. Our popular Mini - Med School curriculum consists of four Ɵ mely health lectures delivered by specialists in their fi elds. x February 11 th – Func Ɵ onal Fitness – Dr. Ginamarie Foglia x February 18 th – Aging Bone & Joints – Dr. Robert Jamieson x February 25 th – What’s New in Radia Ɵ on Therapy – Dr. Ned Williams x March 4 th – The Aging Brain – Dr. Kyle Gulbranson
All lectures will be held at 5:30pm in the Dunford Auditorium (Browning Learning Center Building) on the Utah Tech campus. Ample, free parking is available. No pre - registra Ɵ on is necessary, membership in ICL is not required, and all lectures are free! So bring your family, friends (if you have any), and that uncle “Aldolf” that no one wants to talk about. In its second year, the Mini - Med School is a collabora Ɵ ve, community educa Ɵ on program sponsored by Utah Tech University’s Ins Ɵ tute for Con Ɵ nued Learning and Intermountain Health. Inves Ɵ ng in community health educa Ɵ on is not merely a social service; it is the cornerstone of a vibrant, resilient, and thriving society. If you have ques Ɵ ons, please email the ICL o ffi ce - icl@utahtech.edu or phone - 435 - 652 - 7670. See you there, Warren Stucki, MD, President of ICL Council

LIVE! UPDATE BY DR. ROB KRAMER
Beat the Winter Blues with Micro - Adventures Feeling a bit of post - holiday letdown? January in St. George can bring a curious paradox — we're blessed with sunshine while the rest of the country shivers, yet many of us s Ɵ ll feel stuck in a winter rut.
Enter the Micro - Adventure: It’s a 2 - 3 hour local explora Ɵ on that breaks up your week without requiring extensive planning, travel, or expense. Research shows that novel experiences s Ɵ mulate brain plas Ɵ city, reduce stress, and increase vitality — exactly what we need to shake o ff the winter doldrums. St. George Micro - Adventure Ideas: Dawn Patrol at Red Hills Desert Garden – Watch the sunrise from the labyrinth. Morning light on red rock is spectacular, and you'll likely have the place to yourself. Take an ICL class you’re not interested in – Pick a class that you wouldn’t typically choose. Go with a companion and discuss the class a Ō erwards. The "Wrong Turn" Challenge – Drive your usual route to the grocery store, but at one intersec Ɵ on, deliberately turn the "wrong" way. See where a 20 - minute detour leads. Sip & Write at Ancestor Square – Grab a co ff ee or cocoa and a small notepad. Spend 30 minutes wri Ɵ ng down observa Ɵ ons or crea Ɵ ng a short story based on the people you see. Sunset at a New Vantage Point – Try the Washington Fields viewpoint, the UT campus upper parking lots, or even the Walmart parking garage (seriously — 360° views). The ICL Connec Ɵ on: You don't have to adventure alone! Watch for ICL emails announcing events & ac Ɵ vi Ɵ es o ff ered through Utah Tech University. These organized micro - adventures come with built - in companionship and insider knowledge. Your Challenge: Schedule a 2 - hour block this week for a micro - adventure!

THOMAS STEWART CHEMISTRY IN OUR DAILY LIVES
Gluten, saturated fat, unsaturated fat — these words appear on almost every nutri Ɵ on label. We see them every day, but how many of us truly understand what they mean? These terms are familiar, o Ō en without being fully understood. Thomas Stewart reveals the hidden complexity behind objects and processes that appear in our everyday lives. Stewart’s class, Chemistry in Our Daily Lives , unlocks an apprecia- Ɵ on for the thought and science behind many modern products we use every day. He explains chemistry in a diges Ɵ ble way, making it accessible to those with li Ʃ le scien Ɵ fi c background. As Stewart puts it, these are “terms they have heard before, but never knew what they meant.”
ICL instructor Thomas Stewart
Stewart grew up in Torrance, California, where he lived for 76 years. He has been married for 61 years and has three children, four grandchildren, and 10 great - grandchildren. His chemistry educa Ɵ on began at a com- munity college and later con Ɵ nued at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned both a bach- elor’s and a master’s degree in physical chemistry. During his early college years, he started working for an aerospace company called North American Avia Ɵ on on the Apollo Space Program (yes, that space program), bonding insula Ɵ on to spacecra Ō . A Ō er some Ɵ me, he moved to The Aerospace Corpora Ɵ on, a nonpro fi t
organiza Ɵ on, where he worked in the chemistry lab for 40 years. During this Ɵ me, he gained his fi rst teaching experi- ence, instruc Ɵ ng chemistry at a community college in the evenings. A Ō er 35 years, he began teaching at California State Univ. Dominguez Hills, where he taught for a decade. In 2018, Stewart le Ō California and “never looked back.” He has lived in St. George for seven years and thoroughly enjoys the area’s arts, culture, and nearby na Ɵ onal parks. Stewart was introduced to ICL by his friend Andy Christen- sen, who taught an Einstein class and encouraged him to share his exper Ɵ se with the ICL community. Stewart enjoys teaching at ICL because he gets to intro- duce new ideas to people later in life. By the end of the course , the chemistry behind everyday life becomes far less in Ɵ mida Ɵ ng — and much more fascina Ɵ ng.
Chemistry in Our Daily Lives is o ff ered in - person on Mondays at 3:00 p.m.

KUDOS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS!
Our “army of volunteers” is the backbone of ICL, making it possible to o ff er a wide range of programs at a frac Ɵ on of the cost of similar organiza Ɵ ons. This ar Ɵ cle doesn't include all our volunteers, as there are too many to men Ɵ on by name, but we truly appreciate our instructors on the front lines and our volunteers who work Ɵ relessly behind the scenes, year - round, to bring quality lifelong learning to the ICL community. This is a hear ƞ elt recogni Ɵ on of those who contributed their Ɵ me, talents, and energy to launch our Spring semester. In late November, then Director Rob Kramer and Cynthia Holman - Schmidt organized the semester’s class schedule, carefully matching instructor preferences with available rooms. With 60 instructors teaching over 70 courses on campus, this was a signi fi cant undertaking. Then, trusty volunteer Herb Meron helped the o ffi ce manager enter class schedules and course descrip Ɵ ons into ICL’s online registra Ɵ on system. Read Gilgen added class & instructor photos, set up IT access for instructors, and assisted them with classroom technology. Social Commi Ʃ ee Chair Caroline Dulworth coordinated the January 5th Registra Ɵ on Social, with Cynthia Holman - Schmidt, Wendy King, and Teresa Weydert arranging refreshments and se ƫ ng up the event. The registra Ɵ on team — Sandy Baskerville, Read Gilgen, Cynthia Holman - Schmidt, and Herb Meron — assisted at the Registra Ɵ on Social, helping a Ʃ endees to sign up in - person for classes. Laurie Call and Linda Stucki managed lines, and the team con Ɵ nued assis Ɵ ng registrants in the ICL o ffi ce throughout the following weeks. ICL's dedicated volunteers are essen Ɵ al to o ff ering diverse, a ff ordable programs, and we appreciate everyone who contributed to ge ƫ ng our semester o ff to a great start, as well as those who con Ɵ nue to keep ICL running smoothly throughout the semester. Interested in volunteering? Send us an email at: icl@utahtech.edu
