AUGUST 2023

QUITTING IS FOR QUITTERS

DON’T GIVE UP!

Success comes with pain, stress, setbacks, changes, and obstacles. It’s all about persevering and powering through, especially when failures and challenges present themselves. On Aug. 18, we celebrate Never Give Up Day, and while not giving up and continuing to push forward is sometimes much easier said than done, it’s an important motto to live by. After all, you must fall to learn how to stand.

Here at Case Barnett Law, we meet people at some of the most difficult and trying times in their lives. Some have

lost their partner or significant other in horrible medical malpractice cases. Others are battling their insurance companies after facing some terrible injuries. Most of our clients are lost and distraught when they come into our office, and it’s our priority to help them to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The stress of litigation, the anxiety of battling with insurance companies, and the many emotions that come with seeing a case from beginning to close take a toll on our clients. That’s why we are here to remind them to never give up. Many of you may know I am a fan of many books by Thich Nhat Hanh, a global spiritual leader. One of my favorite quotes of his says, “You never step in the same stream twice.” In my personal and professional life, I find this to be incredibly accurate. Things are constantly changing, even if you don’t realize it. Things are never the same as they were yesterday — your friends and loved ones are constantly learning and evolving, and although you think you know how a situation may turn out, you just can never be too sure — life is fluid, and this moment is only temporary. That’s why it’s important to embrace change, control your destiny, and never give up, no matter how tough the situation.

In all you do, hang onto hope and persevere — you will come out on top!

Back in 2015, one particular case jump-started our law firm. We took on a case that had been

previously dismissed and thrown out by a judge on a motion for reconsideration. We went on to file an appeal, and the case was overturned, but we beat the motion for a second time, although we only had a $100,000 offer for a client who had endured $300,000 in costs on the case. That wasn’t going to fly — so, we pressed on! We ended up going to trial, getting a jury verdict, and settled the case for over $4 million! The course of this litigation took about six years before we were able to reach justice for our client. It tested our patience and felt impossible at times, but we hung onto our seats. Most cases do not ever take this long, but continuing to press on certainly paid off. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” In all you do, hang onto hope and persevere — you will come out on top!

GROW, BLOOM, AND ENJOY THE VIEW Create a Garden Oasis

The end of summer will be here before we know it, but there’s still plenty of time to get a garden going before colder weather rolls in. Give yourself the best chance at creating a beautiful fall garden by developing a plan for your space. Add flowers. Bring a touch of color and wonderful smells to your garden by planting flowers. You can find all kinds of flowers that fit your garden’s style — some flowers that will withstand the transition from summer to fall are hydrangeas, pansies, and asters. Plant seasonal vegetables. The best part about a vegetable garden is that there’s always something to grow, regardless of the season. As the weather begins to cool, you can start planting squash, pumpkins, and carrots. Incorporate water features. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can still add a beautiful space to your yard. Ponds, fountains, and waterfalls can be easy to install and require minimal upkeep.

OUR CLIENTS SAY IT BEST "I never thought I would be in a position where I would need to retain a personal injury attorney. I didn't even know where to start. I had asked around and looked up nearly half a dozen options before landing on Case Barnett. I could not have been happier. From our initial conversations, I felt completely at ease. Case's easy going demeanor coupled with his unswerving compassion and professionalism convinced me I had made the right choice.

The entire team was amazing. Throughout my entire experience (which lasted roughly two years), I always felt like I was the most important client they had. Even now that the experience is behind me, I am grateful for the connection for with this team." -Michael F.

DON'T LET THE BUGS BITE SUMMER TIPS FOR INSECT-FREE FUN!

The type of repellent isn’t as important as whether it contains one of these main ingredients: • Lemon-eucalyptus oil • Citronella oil (combined with thyme for ticks) • Picaridin • Diethyltoluamide (DEET) GET RID OF ANY STANDING WATER NEAR YOUR HOUSE. Mosquitoes use stagnant water to lay their eggs, so any filled buckets, partially filled kiddie pools, broken fountains, or even discarded toys that have collected water can all attract mosquitoes to your yard. Routinely check your yard and dump out any water you find.

cover any exposed skin when outside. If you can, wear long-sleeved shirts, full-length pants, tall socks, and closed-toe shoes, especially when hiking or camping. And if you can, tuck your pants into your socks or shoes to prohibit anything from crawling up your legs.

August is the last full month of summer, which means bugs are at their pesky peak. If you and your family love to get outside in the summertime, protecting your family from bug bites is about more than their itchy aftermath. Bugs can carry many diseases that put you, your family, and your pets at risk. For example, mosquitoes and ticks can transmit the West Nile virus, while ticks can spread Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and much more — including causing alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), which is a life-threatening allergic reaction. So, if you and your family find yourselves outside this summer, here are some tips to keep those creepy-crawlies at bay. COVER UP! One of the most straightforward ways to ensure no one gets bitten by a bug is to

CHOOSE YOUR OUTDOOR TIME WISELY.

Mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and late evening, so avoid going outside during dawn or dusk if possible.

USE INSECT REPELLENTS. One of the most effective ways to keep bugs from biting is to use some form of bug repellent. Today, many people opt for non- spray repellent alternatives like repellent patches, wristbands, or clip-ons, many of which work great.

Lastly, be sure to thoroughly check for bugs on both your family and your pets before ever setting foot inside!
