HARMONSON HEADLINES YOUR GUIDE TO PERSONAL INJURY IN THE BORDERLAND AUGUST 2023

DECOMPRESS THE DAY’S STRESS WITH HEALTHY HABITS PRESS PAUSE AND REST THIS NATIONAL RELAXATION DAY!

Being a lawyer isn’t easy, so I squeeze in some relaxation time whenever I can. With Aug. 15 being my birthday and National Relaxation Day, you can bet I spent it unwinding with my family. While I genuinely love my career and couldn’t imagine not being an attorney, it isn’t a stress- free environment. As a business owner as well, I get to be my own boss while also helping people who’ve experienced severe injuries or accidents. Yet, I’d be lying if I said that the stress sometimes doesn’t get to me. With the job’s pressure, it’s no surprise that attorneys have some of the highest rates of anxiety, depression, and alcoholism among all professions. Even I used to decompress with one or two glasses of wine after I got home from work. The problem was that it started becoming a habit rather than a genuine form of relaxation. The last thing I needed was for this to turn into something serious, so in 2017, I gave up alcohol altogether! I haven’t had a drop of alcohol in six years, and to be completely honest, I feel the best I ever have. I decided to focus on relaxing with new, healthier habits. What better way to relax from a jam-packed day than sweating it out? Exercise has become a significant part of my life, especially running. While I don’t consider myself a supreme athlete, I do love to run, and I competed in two half- marathons just last year! Yes, my time has gotten slower with age, but I am proud to have run over 20 marathons. I’ll fill you in on my favorite running route in El Paso. I park my car at Tom Lea Park and pass by the mansions on Scenic Drive and the picturesque neighborhoods of

Kern and Mission Hills. Every Sunday morning, they close Scenic Drive to traffic, and you can walk to the very top to get the most stunning view of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. Meanwhile, if my legs are too sore to hit the pavement, I’ll pull out a book! At night, I love to sit out on the back porch and dive right into a good book. I could talk about books all

day, so I’ll try not to bore you! I read fiction, history, and practically everything in between. Despite working with numerous people daily, I’m naturally an introvert and need some alone time to recharge, and a book is perfect for me to do just that! Lastly, there might be no better way to de-stress than spend

too big on shopping, I’m more than happy to be their taxi driver! As for my wife Sheri, we don’t get alone time too often, so we always cherish one another’s company. Since we work in the same office, though, we have plenty of lunch dates together! Everyone relaxes in their own way, but we all must unwind in whatever way works best to stay physically and mentally healthy. Whether you let loose with cardio, cooking, or video

time with my family. Simply hanging out with them can turn my entire day around! During the summer, Winton and I dive into the pool to cool down and splash around to our heart’s desires. Meanwhile, my older kids are super into thrifting these days (your teens, too?), but since I’m not

games, we all need time to decompress and recharge. I hope you spent National Relaxation Day doing exactly what was intended: relaxing!

DO MOST PERSONA RESULT IN A

We all wish our pets would be there for us in an emergency. Dogs, cats, and other animals can accomplish amazing feats when provided with enough love and care, and a cat from Liverpool named Willow recently proved that many times over. A cat’s sense of smell is incredibly effective at detecting when something is abnormal, and Willow used her nose to save her owner in the nick of time. For many with diabetes, falling into a diabetic coma is a constant concern, and they regularly check their blood sugar levels and take insulin shots to avoid that scenario. Amanda Jameson, a 51-year-old woman from Liverpool, received a diabetes diagnosis years ago but had always stayed on top of it. In April 2023, she fell asleep while her blood sugar was dangerously low. Thankfully, her cat, Willow, noticed something was wrong and sprang into action. Willow went to the living room, where Amanda’s husband had fallen asleep watching television. Willow proceeded to bite his leg and jump on him until he woke up around 4 a.m. He could tell something was wrong, as this was abnormal behavior for Willow, so he followed her to the bedroom, where he spotted his wife. She was slumped over and unresponsive, and he immediately called her an ambulance. Doctors informed Amanda’s husband that she was moments away from slipping into a diabetic coma, but Willow had smelled something off and gotten help before it was too late. Most pets would get a few extra treats for their heroism, but Willow’s feats earned her a more prestigious award. The National Cat Awards named Willow as a finalist for their “Moggy Marvels” category. If Willow wins, she’ll receive a trophy, a £200 pet store voucher, and a year subscription to Cats Protection’s

When You Should Consider Head

While you’ve probably seen plenty of courtroom dramas where victims often stand before a judge, the reality is much different. Personal injury cases rarely go to court. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, only 3% of all personal injury cases result in a trial. Of course, our team has had to fight for our clients’ compensation in the courtroom, and we know what it takes to win these cases. WHY DO MOST CASES STAY OUT OF COURT? Although other cases involve a judge and jury, why are personal injury cases different? Well, defendants and insurance companies often would rather cut their losses and offer a settlement to resolve the claim as quickly as possible, especially if they’re being accused of negligence. Other reasons why most cases stay out of court are: • Court fees and legal expenses can quickly add up for either side, so it’s sometimes best to save money and settle before trial. • Accepting a settlement can compensate you faster than if you went to court, which could delay your compensation for months or even years. • A victim may not have enough evidence to prove their innocence without a doubt. Meanwhile, if a victim has considerable evidence to prove negligence, an insurance company may want to settle and avoid trial.

Learn the Different Kinds of Injuries and Their Cases

WHEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER GOING TO TRIAL? Usually, it’s best to settle without going to court, but there are a few instances when heading to trial is the best option. Whether it’s to benefit the plaintiff or defendant, some reasons why personal injury cases go to court include: • An insurance company may insist on going to court to prevent future cases from being established. • If the defendant or plaintiff knows they have the evidence to win the case, they may refuse to settle to receive a better judgment in the courtroom. • If the settlement is too low to cover damages and medical expenses, a victim should take their case to court. IF YOU DO, THERE’S NO NEED TO WORRY. No personal injury cases are the same. It’s in your best interest to speak with an experienced attorney who can help you decide whether or not your case should have a trial. Our team is ready to fight by your side every step of the way, even in the courtroom. If you want to learn more about the possibility of heading to court, call us at (915) 584-8777 .

The term “catastrophic” can hold a variety of meanings to different people. However, in legal terms, a catastrophic injury is a severe injury that can change a person’s life. Whether lifelong or short-term, catastrophic injuries can lead to expensive medical bills, at-home care, lost wages, permanent disability, and emotional damage. If a person endures a catastrophic injury due to the negligence of another person or company, they are more than justified to pursue a legal case. TYPES OF CATASTROPHIC INJURIES Usually, catastrophic injuries can fall into three types: physical, spinal cord, or cognitive. While there are countless forms of catastrophic injuries, some examples may include the following: • Physical injuries: Burns, fractures, amputation, tissue damage, deformity, mesothelioma, other cancers, and more • Spinal cord injuries: Injury to the spinal cord can result in paralysis, other mobility issues, and chronic pain. • Cognitive injuries: Due to brain damage, these injuries may lead to speaking issues, blindness, memory loss, seizures, and much more.

WHO’S AT FAULT? Catastrophic injuries can occur due to multiple causes. These accidents can often include car/truck accidents, workplace accidents, medical malpractice, falls, and product defects. What results from any of these accidents are severe physical and emotional damage. A person has every right to file a lawsuit against the individual or company at fault for their catastrophic injury. Compensation should cover not just their extensive medical care and lost wages but also the emotional turmoil that came with the reduced quality of life. Due to the severity of these injuries, catastrophic injury cases often see higher compensation than other personal injury claims. However, you will need an experienced legal team to ensure your case is accurately presented in order to receive the best settlement possible. We’ve helped numerous people and families win their catastrophic injury lawsuits, and we’re here to do the same for you or someone you know who’s experienced a severe injury. Keep Those Pesky Pests Away!

DON’T LET THE BUGS BITE

Summer Tips for Insect-Free Fun!

August is the last full month of summer, which means bugs are at their pesky peak.

socks, and closed-toe shoes, especially when hiking or camping. And if you can, tuck your pants into your socks or shoes to prohibit anything from crawling up your legs. CHOOSE YOUR OUTDOOR TIME WISELY. Mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and late evening, so avoid going outside during dawn or dusk if possible. USE INSECT REPELLENTS. One of the most effective ways to keep bugs from biting is to use some form of bug repellent. Today, many people opt for non-spray repellent alternatives like repellent patches, wristbands, or clip-ons, many of which work great.

GET RID OF ANY STANDING WATER NEAR YOUR HOUSE. Mosquitoes use stagnant water to lay their eggs, so any filled buckets, partially filled kiddie pools, broken fountains, or even discarded toys that have collected water can all attract mosquitoes to your yard. Routinely check your yard and dump out any water you find. Lastly, be sure to thoroughly check for bugs on both your family and your pets before ever setting foot inside!

If you and your family love to get outside in the summertime, protecting your family from bug bites is about more than their itchy aftermath. Bugs can carry many diseases that put you, your family, and your pets at risk. For example, mosquitoes and ticks can transmit the West Nile virus, while ticks can spread Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and much more — including causing alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), which is a life-threatening allergic reaction. So, if you and your family find yourselves outside this summer, here are some tips to keep those creepy-crawlies at bay. COVER UP! One of the most straightforward ways to ensure no one gets bitten by a bug is to cover any exposed skin when outside. If you can, wear long-sleeved shirts, full-length pants, tall

The type of repellent isn’t as important as whether it contains one of these main ingredients: • Lemon-eucalyptus oil • Citronella oil (combined with thyme for ticks)
