Sometimes, the Greatest Wins Don’t End With a Trophy

When you’ve spent years coaching your kids, you end up with a lot of great memories. Sure, there are the championships and the celebrations, but the moments that stick with you most have nothing to do with winning. They’re the moments that teach you something you’ll carry long after the season is over. This past soccer season was one of those moments for our family. I started coaching my oldest daughter, Sybil, when she was 5 because she was too afraid to play without me helping. What began as just trying to help my little girl feel comfortable on the field turned into a seven-year journey that gave our family memories I wouldn’t trade for anything. A few years later, I started coaching my younger daughter, Elyse, too. One of the fun things about our league is that you get to name your team. We called ourselves the Yodas. We’d bring a little cardboard Yoda to every game and get the girls excited to “use the force” to score. It became part of our team’s personality, and the girls loved it.

team called the Bananas. They’d cheer, “Let’s go Bananas!” before games and wore bright yellow socks. When it came time for Sybil’s final season, we were able to combine the two teams. The Yodas and the Bananas officially became the Banodas. What a perfect way to finish! After winning three championships in a row, we were going for our fourth straight title. Even better, I got I to coach both my girls on the same team, and watching them play together is something I’ll never forget. The championship game didn’t exactly start the way we planned. We fell behind two goals to zero, and I remember thinking, “Oh no, this is going to be a bloodbath.” Then something special happened!

The girls didn’t quit. They kept encouraging each other and believing! Little by little, they fought their way back until the score was tied 2-2, and just like that, everything came down to penalty kicks and tons of pressure on the goalies. Unfortunately, we lost, and it was heartbreaking! Of course, the girls felt defeated. For Sybil, it was her last soccer game, and nobody wants to end their final season that way. Looking back, I realized the championship wasn’t the greatest victory we had that season. After the game, we had the opportunity to talk about all the important things we’d learned together as a team. We talked about coming together, supporting each other, spending time together, and working on our skills. The season was still a success, even though we didn’t ultimately win the championship game. Life doesn’t always reward hard work with the outcome you want. Sometimes you do everything right: prepare, practice, and give it everything you’ve got. You still come up short, but that doesn’t mean the effort didn’t matter. That’s one of the most important lessons sports can teach young people. You can’t always control the outcome, but you can control

Eventually, Sybil and Elyse had to play on two different teams, and coaching both was a little much. Sybil ended up playing for another

From Impact to Recovery KEY STEPS AFTER A CAR CRASH One minute you’re heading down the road, the next, you’re dealing with damage, stress, and questions about what to do next. At Weatherby Law Firm, we see how often people feel unsure in those first few minutes, and how small decisions can shape everything that follows. Most Common Car Accidents Most cases we handle start with familiar situations. Rear-end collisions are extremely common, especially in heavy traffic. We also see failure-to-yield crashes, unsafe lane changes, and drivers running red lights. These cases seem straightforward, but details often matter more than people expect. Other cases are more complex. Commercial vehicles like delivery trucks bring added rules and responsibilities, especially when it comes to wide turns, backing up, and stopping distances. When the facts are disputed, experts like accident reconstructionists can step in to help piece together what really happened using roadway The first priority is always safety. Check for injuries and call emergency services if needed. Even in a minor crash, getting law enforcement involved helps create an official record that can matter later. Next, document everything you can. Photos of the vehicles, road conditions, traffic signs, and any visible damage can be extremely evidence and vehicle data. Post-Accident Checklist

helpful. Exchange information with the other driver, and if there are witnesses, get their contact details while it is still fresh. It is also important to avoid admitting fault in the moment. Emotions run high after a crash, and even an apology can be misunderstood later. Notify your insurance company as soon as possible, since delays can create coverage issues. Getting checked by a doctor is also key, even if you feel fine at first, because some injuries may not appear right away. The Importance of These Steps Seemingly small decisions after a crash can have a significant impact on your recovery and claim. August is recognized as National Traffic Awareness Month, which is a good reminder to stay alert and prepared every time you get behind the wheel. At Weatherby Law Firm, we encourage drivers to think ahead, stay calm after a collision, and protect both their health and their rights from the very start.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL MADE SIMPLE Smart Organization Tips for Busy Parents

Why is it that the first day of school always sneaks up on you? One minute, summer feels endless, and the next, you are juggling supply lists, new routines, and busy schedules. For many parents, the shift can feel overwhelming. However, with a little planning and a few smart systems, back-to-school season can feel far more manageable. Begin with simple systems. Organization begins before the first bell rings. Taking time to sort through clothes, supplies, and old materials can prevent clutter from piling up later. Experts recommend decluttering drawers and checking what you already have before shopping to avoid unnecessary purchases. Creating designated spaces in your home also makes a significant difference. A small “drop zone” near the door for backpacks, shoes, and papers helps keep everything

in one place. Even a homework station or supply bin can reduce daily chaos and keep kids focused. Build routines that stick. Consistency is the backbone of a smooth school year. Start easing into school routines a week or two early by adjusting bedtimes and morning habits. This helps children transition from relaxed summer schedules to structured school days without stress. Evening preparation also makes a major difference. Laying out clothes, packing backpacks, and prepping lunches the night before can transform hectic mornings into calm, predictable starts. These small habits add up quickly and create a sense of stability for the entire family. Use visual organization tools. Children thrive when they can see what is expected of them. Visual schedules, color-

coded calendars, or categorized charts can guide kids through their day without constant reminders. These tools are especially helpful for younger children who benefit from clear, easy-to-follow cues. A central family calendar can also keep everyone on the same page. Between school events, extracurriculars, and family commitments, having one place to track everything reduces confusion and last- minute stress. Keep it realistic. It’s easy to overcommit at the start of a new school year. Many parents feel pressure to sign their children up for multiple activities, but too many commitments can quickly lead to burnout. Choosing fewer activities and focusing on what truly matters helps maintain balance and keeps schedules manageable.

A courtroom today looks nothing like the one I walked into when I first started practicing law. Back then, everything was slower and heavier. Now, technology has changed how I prepare, present, and think during a trial. What used to take weeks can come together in minutes, and the difference is hard to overstate. Back When Trials Were Physical When I tried my first case in 2010, everything relied on physical presentation. I worked with a design company to create massive poster boards showing injuries, timelines, and key case themes. They were expensive, and once printed, they were locked in. I still remember the pressure that came with it. Every word had to be perfect because there was no easy fix. Even small changes could mean starting over or living with a mistake in front of the jury. The Rookie Mistake I’ll Never Forget I was a brand-new lawyer working on a case against a major Georgia law firm, Arnall Golden. On one of our massive poster boards, I wrote their name prominently, but I made a careless error. Instead of writing “Arnall Golden,” I wrote “Arnold” as in Arnold Schwarzenegger. I remember seeing it in print and immediately realizing what I had done. It was too late to fix. We had already spent a lot of money on the boards, and there was no reprint option. The only solution was to place a sticker over the mistake with the correct name. Even worse, if a judge struck something during trial, there was no way to remove it cleanly. That moment taught me the importance of Today, I take a case outline, drop it into AI tools, and get a full PowerPoint timeline in minutes. I can edit, rearrange, and refine everything instantly. What used to take me weeks of coordination now takes a few hours. I also use multiple AI systems together. One helps me brainstorm and structure ideas, and the other helps me convert those ideas into presentation slides. The courtroom itself has modernized too, with large screens, iPads, and video testimony replacing many physical exhibits. What Comes Next Now I’m even exploring AI that can listen live during trial, compare witness testimony with depositions, and flag contradictions in real time. That could change how I prepare for cross-examination. I feel like I am part lawyer and part video editor now, but the tradeoff is worth it. I can focus more on strategy and less on production. checking things twice. AI Making Changes Trials Today Look Nothing Like 2010 FROM STATIC EXHIBITS TO DYNAMIC PRESENTATIONS

how hard you work, how you treat your teammates, and how you respond when things don’t go your way. Oddly enough, that’s a lesson I see in my work as an attorney, too. Personal injury cases are, in some ways, a competition. Despite what some lawyer advertisements might suggest, we don’t win every case. Sometimes, things don’t go your way, even when you’ve worked as hard as you can and pushed for the best possible outcome. What we can promise is that we’ll put forth the best case we can. We’ll make sure our clients get their day in court and have the opportunity to share what happened to them. We’ll fight for them every step of the way. Our goal is to stand alongside people during some of the hardest points in their lives. Obviously, we want to recover as much compensation as we can so our clients can pay their bills and be compensated for their injuries. That’s an important part of what we do. We also try to be approachable. A kind person to walk through the process with. Someone who can help them share and process the emotional side of everything they’re experiencing.

Just like I wanted those girls to know they were more than the final score, I want our clients to know they’re more than the outcome of a case. Winning is always nice. Helping people through life’s difficult moments and knowing you gave them your very best is too.
