University Of Texas At Arlington Dedicates Harris Packaging Labs BY LEN PRAZYCH The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) held two ribbon cutting cer- emonies in late October to recognize and thank sisters Jana Harris and Jenise Harris Cox for their gift of $250,000 in honor of their fa- ther, the late Joe Harris, who founded Harris Packaging in 1976 and American Carton Company in 1992. More than 60 family, alumni, fac- ulty, employees, students and corrugated industry colleagues were on hand to hear speeches and witness ribbon cuttings on the Joe Harris Packaging Production Lab (Room 155) and the Harris Packaging Design and Innovation Hub (Room 291).

PCA To Shut Down Paper Machines At Washington Mill Lake Forest, Illinois based Packaging Corp. of America (PCA) has revealed plans to recon- figure its containerboard mill in Wallula, Wash- ington, in the face of what the company de- scribes as a challenging and worsening cost environment at the facility. By the end of the first quarter of 2026, PCA plans to shut down its No. 2 paper machine and kraft pulping facilities at the Wallula mill and will continue to operate its No. 3 paper machine and recycled pulping facilities. The moves are expected to impact 200 workers. After the shutdowns, the mill will have the capacity to produce 285,000 tons of recycled linerboard and corrugated medium per year, removing 250,000 tons of annual production capacity from the mill. This year, the Wallula mill is expected to produce about 400,000 tons of container- board. “We face a challenging and worsening cost environment at the Wallula mill,” PCA CEO Mark Kowlzan says. “Wood fiber and pur- chased power costs are by far the highest in our system, making the currently configured mill no longer competitive.”

“We are truly honored by Jana and Jenise’s generosity, which re- flects a deep belief in the power of education and creativity,” said Eliz- abeth Newman, dean of the College of Liberal Arts. “Their gift ensures that future UTA art and art history Mavericks (the nickname for UTA students) have the tools, inspiration and spaces to bring bold ideas to life. This moment celebrates not only a revitalized space in the College of Liberal Arts, but also the legacy of alumni giving that fuels student success and innovation.” The Packaging Program at UTA introduces students to structural de- sign, materials, sustainability, performance and testing. Students work independently and in teams to solve packaging challenges that ad- dress current industry needs. “We’re so thrilled to have a relationship CONTINUED ON PAGE 22 From left, President Jennifer Cowley, Jenise Harris Cox, Jana Harris, and Dean Elizabeth Newman cut the ribbon on the Joe Harris Packaging Pro- duction Lab at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Wasatch Container Invests In Two- Sided Printing With SUN, Kolbus North Salt Lake, Utah based Wasatch Container has al- ways looked for ways to stand apart. When Wasatch be- gan exploring new opportunities to differentiate its pack- aging solutions, the leadership team knew it would take more than incremental improvement. “From day one, our goal has been to be the best packaging company in the In- termountain region,” said Jerry Frisch, President, Wasatch Container. “To do that, we’ve continually invested in better equipment and in our people — always intending to stay ahead of customer needs.” That philosophy guided the company’s decision to invest in a Kolbus RD115S rotary die-cutter in 2023. The installation gave Wasatch something few others in the

Intermountain region could offer: high-quality, two-sided printing in one pass. “E-commerce has elevated packag- ing to a branding tool, and customers increasingly want the inside of the box to tell a story,” Frisch explained. “This Jerry Frisch with the Kolbus RD115S rotary die cutter.

investment allows us to help our customers create a more compelling unboxing experi- ence.” For Wasatch, the decision wasn’t taken lightly. The team conducted extensive due diligence, including print trials, before com- mitting to the five-color press. The Kolbus RD115S has opened doors to serve brands that demand brochure-like interiors, special ink colors, and shorter run lengths. “It’s a space many large integrators avoid,” Frisch said. “But it’s where we thrive.” Two-sided printing, however, came with challenges. “Two-sided printing isn’t just about running a box through twice — it de- mands careful planning of graphics, ink, and board,” Frisch noted. Wasatch leaned on its production team, ink kitchen, and supplier partners to master the process. The payoff has been significant. For Operations Manager Martin Suhr, the Kolbus RD115S is only part of the sto- ry. Equally critical has been the partner- ship with SUN Automation Group, Kolbus’s North American partner. “The machinery is impressive, but what really sets the expe- rience apart is SUN’s service,” Suhr said. “Their depth of experience and the caliber of their people give us confidence that no matter the challenge, we’ll have the support we need.” That support has proven critical, with SUN and Kolbus technicians working along- side Wasatch staff during commissioning and troubleshooting. “It was a true partner- ship in action,” Suhr recalled. Phil Eads, Technical Sales Manager at SUN Automation, said Wasatch’s early adoption of two-sided print is a case study in how independents can stay competitive.

Turn Trim Waste into Revenue One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs

Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved.

Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: No way to monitor the system unless you’re on site. Solution: G.F. Puhl leads the pack with proprietary technology that makes it possible to monitor the system from wherever you are. Request PLC touch screen controls with real-time pressure balancing and real-time remote via your smart phone or computer. G.F. Puhl’s expert engineering team has more than 50 years of combined experience designing, fabricating installing, and commissioning trim and dust collection systems of every kind, including outdoor systems with dual compactors, above roof systems with single or multiple cyclones and balers and below roof screen separator systems. If you’re looking for a vendor that can help you solve the scrap collection puzzle once and for all, contact G.F. Puhl today. 615.230.9500 or sales@gfpuhl.com

Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste hauler is changing out the container. Problem: No budget for a new system. Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety.

XDS Marks 40 Years, Celebrates Partnership With JB Machinery Facility Expansion Neenah, Wisconsin based XDS recently celebrated 40 years of engi- neering, manufacturing, and delivering high-performance drying, curing, plate cleaning, and ink management technologies to the global printing and converting industries. What began in 1985 as The Diagnostic Group, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in fluid mechanics and heat-transfer processes, has grown into a trusted industry leader whose solutions are found across web, specialty, and corrugated production lines worldwide.

• Only standard hand tools are required for all maintenance • Direct drive with no chains or sprockets • No tools for media change required » just zip it up » media change out in minutes • Filter is accessible for visual inspection during operation, Significant Advantages Over Conventional Dust Filtration Technology

From its early days, the company’s expertise in drying science fueled rapid expansion. By the late 1980s, XDS had evolved beyond consulting to retrofit dryer enhancements and design of full specialty drying and curing systems under the XericWeb® brand. These early innovations laid the foundation for what would become decades of product advance- ment — driven by research, engineering rigor, and close collaboration with customers seeking greater safety, efficiency, and productivity. “As we celebrate 40 years, I’m proud of what our team and partners have achieved,” says Jeff DeVries, XDS President. “Founded on engi- neering discipline, curiosity, and problem-solving, we remain committed to innovation, continuous improvement, and supporting our industries with the integrity that defines our first four decades.” A pivotal chapter began in the mid-1990s when XDS partnered with JB Machinery, the industry’s leading supplier of drying and productivity solutions for flexo direct print in corrugated operations. The relationship quickly proved transformational. Together, XDS and JB Machinery pio- neered breakthrough solutions that reshaped the drying and printing landscape. Over the next two decades, their combined engineering and manufacturing efforts drove innovations that earned JB Machinery five AICC Innovator of the Year Awards and a FEFCO Silver for Best Innova- tion — recognition of the technologies that continue to strengthen corru- gated operations around the world. In 2012, the partnership deepened when the Bird family (owners of JB Machinery) acquired XericWeb Drying Systems, forming XDS Holdings, Inc. This integration brought manufacturing, engineering, and product development under one umbrella, positioning XDS to expand both its web-market portfolio and its support for JB Machinery’s rapidly growing corrugated base. Domtar Announces Permanent Closure Of Mill In Crofton, BC

Follow Board Converting News on LinkedIn and Facebook to get the most current news and information for the corrugated and folding carton industries.

Fort Mill, South Carolina based Domtar has announced it will permanently close operations at its Crofton, British Co- lumbia, facility. The decision will reduce Domtar’s annual pulp production by approximately 380,000 air-dried met- ric tons of northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp. The announcement will affect about 350 employees. “The Crofton mill has been challenged for some time now,” said Steve Henry, Domtar paper and packaging president. “Over the last 18 months, Crofton employees worked hard to reduce operational costs and they made some extraordinary gains. Unfortunately, continued poor pricing for pulp and lack of access to affordable fiber in BC necessitates the closure.” “These decisions are made with careful consideration and we recognize the hardship this decision will have on both our employees and the Cowichan Valley communi- ty as well as our business partners and the coastal forest sector,” said Henry. “Our primary focus is on the safety and well-being of our employees as we navigate the coming weeks.” The site will continue to be managed in compliance with all applicable environmental (and other) laws, includ- ing under Domtar’s existing Environmental Management Act permits.

Koenig & Bauer And Rigorous Technology To Host Free Webinar Rigorous Technology, a robotics and technology compa- ny based in Williston, Vermont, is holding a free webinar along with Koenig & Bauer on December 15, 2025 to pro- vide valuable information about advanced automation and robotics in a box manufacturing facility. This web event will be moderated by Diane Abruzzini, COO and co-founder of Rigorous Technology; Colin Riggs, CEO and co-founder of Rigorous Technology; Chelsea Al- len, VP of product at Rigorous Technology; and Tom Fitz- gerald, Koenig & Bauer’s director of post press and corru- gated products. The webinar, “Right Fit Automation in Box Plants” will take a deep dive into automation opportunities in box plant finishing departments, answering questions like: What are the correct robots for your facility, how do you decide between collaborative or industrial robots, a turnkey or custom solution? During the fireside chat, Abruzzini, Riggs, and Fitzgerald will discuss how robotics is playing a key role in overcom- ing the labor challenges in the printing industry. Rigorous manufactures robots as easy to use as web applications through intuitive user interfaces, alarm readouts, and au- tomated fault mitigation. They will also provide valuable insights on how box manufacturers are turning automation and robotics into a revenue-driving solution by combining

Rigorous’ RIG palletizer and Koenig & Bauer’s popular line of folder gluers to empower a post press operation. The trio will also highlight two high profile printers using Koenig & Bauer and Rigorous equipment to their advan- tage. Rigorous initially worked with New Jersey’s Accurate Box Company as a design partner to help develop tooling and software specifically for products packed in half-slot- ted cartons (HSC), expanding the range of products that the RIG can process in finishing departments. Chelsea Al- len will demonstrate the new HSC RIG and share a spe- cial offer solely for event attendees: any RIG purchased in 2026 will include one year of free remote support, a $9,000 value.” Koenig & Bauer introduced Rigorous to Southern Cham- pion Tray (SCT). SCT’s engineering team leveraged Rigor- ous’ RIG Palletizing software to cost effectively deploy pal- letizing at scale, tailored to their specific processes while giving them control over management and deployment. “Rigorous and Koenig & Bauer will be accelerating man- ufacturing and deployments of the RIG products in 2026,” says Abruzzini. “The RIG Palletizing solution is designed specifically for corrugated and folding carton applications. Koenig & Bauer helped us identify this need through their deep industry experience, and the fit has proven to be ide- al. Valco Melton Introduces Real-Time Quality Inspection For Die-Cutters Cincinnati, Ohio based Valco Melton, a global leader in adhesive application and quality inspection systems for the corrugated industry, has announced the launch of DieCutChek, a real-time vision inspection system de- signed specifically for die-cutters and flexo-folder-gluers. The new system extends Valco Melton’s proven Clear- Vision technology upstream in the production process, en- abling corrugated manufacturers to detect quality defects at the die-cutting stage. DieCutChek automatically inspects every die-cut sheet in real-time at speeds up to 300m/min (980ft/min). The system verifies final sheet dimensions, inspects die-cut shapes for missing or partial cuts, detects loose scrap on

sheets, and measures sheet rotation. With 0.5mm resolu- tion, DieCutChek can identify defects as small as 3.0mm in diameter. The system uses multiple high-resolution line-scan Mounts over existing conveyor on die-cutters and FFGs.

cameras with integrated LED lighting mount- ed over the stacker conveyor. Advanced algorithms analyze each sheet as it pass- es through the inspection zone, comparing measurements against job specifications. Defects are instantly flagged on the intuitive ClearVision touchscreen interface, enabling them to be removed from the production stream and aiding in troubleshooting. DieCutChek features real-time sheet size Statistical Process Control (SPC) mon- itoring that continuously tracks dimension- al process data and calculates Cp and Cpk values. Automated trend-based alarming alerts operators to process drift before de- fects occur, while email escalation notifies management of quality issues requiring at- tention. All inspection data is stored for complete traceability, supporting quality reporting and analysis. DieCutChek data can be mon- itored through MeasurementChek and My- SystemChek for comprehensive production visibility. By identifying defects at the die-cut- ting stage, DieCutChek enables operators to make immediate process adjustments, preventing the production of out-of-spec sheets and reducing waste. Optional inte- gration with UV marking and bundle ejec- tion systems enables automated removal of defective sheets from the production stream. DieCutChek gives corrugated manu- facturers the confidence that only quality sheets are leaving their facility, protecting customer relationships and reducing cost- ly returns. DieCutChek is available now through Valco Melton’s global network of representatives.
