The Special and Community Support Division provides information regarding available state and county social service programs. An emergency food pantry and medical equipment loan-out is available for Sunrise residents who may need temporary assistance due to loss of employment or other issues. The division also administers transportation and special programs.

Scams & Schemes Sponsored by: University of Miami- McKnight Institute Date Day Time Fee Registration 7/24 F 10:00 am Free Call to sign up Research consistently shows that older adults are disproportionately targeted by scams and fraudulent schemes. While anyone can become a victim, seniors are often seen as especially vulnerable due to a combination of social, financial, and technological factors. Understanding why scammers target seniors and how to prevent victimization is key to reducing risk. Lunch provided for all pre-registered participants.

Life Changes Support Group 1st & 3rd W 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm Free Walk-ins welcome The Life Changes Support Group, facilitated by VITAS Healthcare, is designed to help people who experience life changes related to the aging process (loss of hearing, vision, mobility or entering the retirement years, to name a few). This is a peer-support group. Free* Call for appointment The City of Sunrise operates an Emergency Food Pantry with canned goods for Sun- rise residents in need. Visits to the Pantry are limited to no more than once every three months until the crisis has passed or an alternate agency can fulfill the need. Weekly 8:30 am - 4:00 pm *It is by appointment only and must be arranged with the Social Worker. For information, call (954) 746-3670 between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.

Prescription Discount Card Program

Sunrise residents who are without health insurance, a traditional pharmacy benefit plan, or have prescriptions not covered by insurance can take advantage of this plan. The savings are approximately 20%, with no income or age requirements. Please call the Sunrise Senior Center at (954) 746-3670 or come by the Senior Center for information.

Understanding Loneliness & Emotional Well-Being Date Day Time Fee Call to sign up This lecture explores what loneliness is and how it develops, and why it is more common than we think. Participants will learn how loneliness affects both mental and physical health and begin to normalize these experiences in a supportive environment. Bring a Florida Driver’s License; a Broward voter registration card; Social Security numbers of all owners; and a copy of the recorded deed or tax bill. Resident aliens must bring a permanent resident green card or proof of asylum.

Veterans Advisors Please call before you come to the Senior Center – This is not a City run program, these dates are subject to cancellation with notice. 7/10, 8/14, 9/11 F 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Free Call to sign up – Dates may vary Broward County Veterans Services have a Certified Veterans Advisor to aid veterans, their widows, dependents and dependent survivors regardless of age or other status. Services are focused on attainment and/or maintenance of self-sufficiency. Services include Information, Referral and Linkage, and Benefits and Claims Processing. “Serving the Health Insurance Needs of the Elderly” counselor will be at the Senior Center. SHINE counselors provide free unbiased and confidential Medicare counseling to empower you to make the best decision for your individual needs. Specially trained volunteers from the Area Agency on Aging will be here to assist you.
