A RICH HISTORY NEBRASKA’S HISTORY Enrich Take in all of North Platte’s historical sites and monuments.
20th Century Veterans Memorial The busy crossroads of the Eisenhower Memorial Interstate System (I-80), and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway (Highway 83), is the perfect loca- tion for this 20th Century Veterans Memorial. The five major armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard) as well as the volunteers of the North Platte Canteen are memorialized by bronze statues. The five major conflicts of the 20th cen- tury (World Wars I and II, Korean, Vietnam, and Desert Storm) are depicted in a fifteen- foot-tall brick bas-relief mural. The memo- rial features a Walk of Honor, lined by thou-
sands of commemorative bricks showing the names of veterans who served at any time during the 20th or 21st century. For a truly in-depth look at the impact of the North Platte Canteen, interested visitors should also be sure to see the exhibit at the Lincoln County Historical Museum.
McPherson is the final resting place of veter- ans of the Spanish American War, Indian Wars, World Wars I and II, Korean, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, and Iraq War. Four Medal of Honor recipients rest here, three of whom served during the Indian Wars and one who served in Vietnam. Established in 1863, the original fort pro- vided protection for the westward trails and the building of the railroad. On March 3, 1873, the Fort McPherson National Cemetery was established, and the remains resting in 23 frontier forts were reinterred here.
