Job Description

• Establish energy and environmental best practice, compliance, and consistent management principles across the business. • Act as lead on ISO 14001 compliance. Energy • Manage development of a utilities metering and monitoring system for each site and ensure its effectiveness in relation to targets and reducing energy consumption. • Working with the Director of Procurement, continue to develop and implement a utilities procurement strategy. • Manage formulation of energy and utilities forecasts and budgets, setting energy and utilities projection estimates for each year. • Create monthly utilities consumption and financial reporting, identifying savings against proposed targets. • Establish benchmarking for energy costs and consumption to understand performance and areas for improvement. • Lead energy projects to ensure returns on investment and agreed savings are delivered. • Liaise with site teams to agree local energy reduction and sustainability initiatives. • Agree and deliver energy/reduction targets. • Coordinate any potential contract amendments where required and possible payment contributions from our university partners for capital investment to aid energy reduction. Environmental Sustainability • Manage and monitor delivery of net zero strategy to align with SBTi commitment to achieve net zero by 2035. • Lead on the development and roll out of revised sustainability induction for all staff. • Identify UPP’s carbon footprint and process for reporting to mandatory schemes (SECR, ESOS, EU ETS) • Develop energy and sustainability initiatives into firm business case proposals for carbon reduction to meet contractual requirements for reporting and energy savings. • Review opportunities and, where agreed, implement framework agreements with suppliers for key technology upgrades and replacements. • Collate all data to for inclusion in Annual Sustainability Report. Business Development and Sector Representation • Input to product development/innovation, building and services design– embedding sustainable development principles across our business such as BREEAM, Renewable technology assessments, EPCs/DECs/TM44, Wellbeing and energy assessments. • Liaise with partner institutions to support their objectives particularly around net zero and student engagement. • Represent UPP at key sector events and provide expertise during bid and stakeholder dialogue. Other • Flexible working out of hours may be necessary from time to time. • National role requiring some travel across the UK, including overnight stays. • Maintain appropriate level of qualification and competence commensurate with this role.

Job Purpose

The Director of Energy & Environmental Sustainability is accountable for developing and leading on UPP’s Energy and Sustainability strategies, management and delivery. Our goal is for UPP to continue towards becoming a sector leader for energy and environmental sustainability. Assuming a senior leadership position within the organisation, you will position UPP as a progressive organisation with a strong and commercial environmental agenda. A significant influencer, both within the business, and with our partners, supply chain and shareholders, you will drive positive change across energy, environmental and cost focused initiatives. You will lead on energy and utilities strategy and management across our full portfolio ensuring that directly and indirectly procured utilities are cost optimised, and their supply arrangements are stable and secure. Driving our environmental agenda across the key business value areas, ensuring we meet our commitments and objectives. Managing and reducing energy consumption, carbon and costs across our national portfolio are key deliverables. The Director of Energy and Environmental Sustainability will build and manage relationships with our senior leaders and partners ensuring energy and environmental sustainability strategies, policy and plans are integrated effectively across all that we do. This will also include the identification of strategic relationships across the business as well as leading internal working groups. Working closely with the business development team, you will position energy management and environmental sustainability at the heart of our core offer, representing UPP at relevant sector events and as a key figure in our work winning dialogues.

Role & Responsibilties

Overall • Define and deliver our vision and strategies regarding energy and environmental sustainability. • Set and deliver our energy strategy and plan. • Provide clear leadership and day to day management across these subject areas. • Ensure that UPP is fully compliant with all current and any future environmental & related legislation. • Formulate other relevant strategies, policies, processes and guidance for energy and sustainability. • Work in close consultation with our energy procurement partners, general managers, energy champions, project leads, and maintenance teams ensure that energy efficiency targets are incorporated into all development planning and operational activities, establishing sustainability principles for decision making and replacement planning. • Lead on the completion of the annual GRESB assessment and set out an annual plan that will lead to improved scoring.
