2. It denies th e existence of Satan. The Bible is the history of th e conflict between God and Satan, going on to the final defeat of Satan. If th e re is no Satan, the Bible is a m ere fable from beginning to end. 3. It claims th e re is no sin, no fall, therefore all th e New T estam ent teach­ ing of atonem ent is false. When Canon Barnes, of W estm inister Abbey, accepted evolution, he gave up th e Bible and Christianity. When Prof. Romanes, th e g reatest of evolutionists, became a Christion, he gave up evolu­ tion. Gen. 1 is th e only tru e scientific ac­ count of creation, given in th ree stages. 1st Stage. “ In th e beginning God created th e heaven and th e ea rth .” From Isa. 45 we know th is creation was perfect. Creation may have been millions of years ago. 2d Stage. The earth came into a state of ruin, as depicted in th e sec­ ond verse.

3d Stage. The six days of making, or bringing the ruined earth into a con­ dition for the occupation by man, th e man and the woman being th e la st crea­ tion. The six days took place about 6000 years since. “A fter its kind,” repeated nine times in Gen. 1, is th e tru e scientific order for development and growth in nature. The work of God in th e n atu ra l world is a foreshadow ing of His work in the new sp iritual creation. Life m ust al­ ways come from God, and to dead sitf- ners who h ear His Word and believe, God im parts a new life spiritually, eternal life, and all sp iritu al grow th and development spring from th a t im­ parted life. “He th a t believeth on th e Son h ath everlasting life, and he th a t believeth no t •th e Son, shall not see life, bu t the w rath of God abideth on him ” (John 3 :3 6 ). “ Forever, O Lord, Thy Word is set­ tled in heaven.” some te st of independent searching of th e Scriptures. The fact is th e re is much th a t passes for sound Bible teach­ ing th a t can be easily upset by many a humble stud en t who knows his Bible b etter th an he knows th e commentaries. We have had altogether too much book learning and far too little Bible learn ­ ing. We appeal to our readers to read the Bible-—read it consecutively, read it topically w ith th e help of a topical textbook or concordance. As a sample of w hat passes for Bible teaching, we quote from an article in the Christian Century of March 29th, “ Can We Believe th e M iracles?” The w riter says: “ It is well not to exaggerate th e im­ portance of th e miracles. NE of the g reat dangers of our day is th a t we have some re­ ligious leaders of liberal mind concerning th e Scrip­

tu res who set before us in th e most casual way w hat they affirm to be th e teaching of the Bible, w ithout so much as a single Scripture reference to sup­ port th e ir statem ents. We are supposed to accept w ithout question whatever is said, w ith due deference to scholar­ ship. The resu lt is th a t many are swallowing a g reat deal th a t is far from tru e to th e Scriptures and w ithout do­ ing any independent Bible study for themselves. We are no t safe in swallowing the teachings of any man, be he liberal or conservative, w ithout pu tting them to
