LESSON TEXT Lu. 2:41-52. Devotional Reading.—Lu. 1:46-55. Time.—A. D. 8, Jesus twelve years old. Place.— Jerusalem .
There are four views of Mary, th e m other of Jesus, which cover th e story of h er life so far as th e Bible is con cerned, and our lesson for today can be grouped around these four pictures of h er: (1) The Home. (2) The House of God (3 ) The Hill of th e Cross. (4 ) The Honored Guest a t Pentecost. (1 ) THE HOME. The first picture we have of Mary is th a t of a young woman in th e home listening to th e words of th e angel Gabriel (Luke 1:26-28) “ H a il, t h o u t h a t . a r t h ig h ly f a v o r e d , th e L o r d i s w ith th e e ; b le s s e d a r t th o u a m o n g w o m e n .” She was troubled and wondered at this salutation, bu t th e angel said: “ F e a r n o t, M a r y ; f o r t h o u h a s t fo u n d f a v o r w ith G o d .” Then follows the LESSON wonderful promise of EXPOSITION a child whose name T., C. H orton was to be Jesus (the salvation of Jehovah). He was to be great, and was to be called th e Son of th e H ighest, and was to have the throne of His fath er David. Then the angel answered th e question of h er h ea rt: “The Holy Ghost shall
come upon thee and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee; th e re fore, also th e holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Seven hundred and fifty years before Isaiah had prophesied th is very event (Isa. 7:14) . “ T h e r e f o r e th e L o r d h im s e lf s h a ll g iv e y o u a s ig n ; B e h o ld , a v ir g in s h a ll c o n c e iv e , a n d b e a r a s o n , a n d s h a l l c a ll h is n a m e Im m a n u e l.” This was a wonderful revelation to th is simple-minded maiden, and her re ply to th e angel is characteristic of h er life (v. 38) “A n d M a ry s a id , B e h o ld th è h a n d m a id o f t h e L o r d ; b e i t u n to m e a c c o r d in g to t h y w o rd .” Her own prophecy made in the pres ence of E lisabeth, th e mother of John the Baptist, has been fulfilled (v. 48) “ F o r h e h a t h r e g a r d e d th e lo w e s t a t e o f h is h a n d m a id e n ; f o r b e h o ld , f r o m h e n c e f o r th , a l l g e n e r a tio n s s h a ll c a l l m e b le s s e d .” There has been a tendency among P ro testan ts,— by reason of th e false teaching of th e Roman Catholic church in worshipping Mary— to forget th a t she is th e blessed one among women and thu s fail to give her th e place th a t God has given her.
