THE K I N G ’S B U S I N E S S

S atan ’s power was broken (Heb. 2 :1 4 ). Every sinner who rejects Jesus Christ will share in his fate (John 3:17, 18; Acts 17:31) “ B e c a u s e h e h a t h a p p o in te d a d a y , in th e w h ic h h e w ill ju d g e th e w o r ld in r ig h t e o u s n e s s b y t h a t m a n w h o m h e h a t h o r d a in e d ; w h e r e o f h e h a t h g iv e n a s s u r a n c e t o a l l m e n in t h a t h e h a t h r a i s e d h im f r o m th e d e a d .” (Heb. 10:28, 29; 12 :25 ). 2. W arning of th e F u tu re , vs. 12, IS. Jesus was one Com forter; th e Holy Spirit would be ano th er Com forter (John 14 :16 ). He would guide them into all tru th and would make known unto them things which were to come. The Holy Spirit dwells in every be liever, coming a t regeneration to abide forever (1) In th e body of th e be liever (1 Cor. 6 :1 9 ); (2) In th e body of believers— th e church. (1 Cor. 12: 13). He is here for a definite work. (1 ) To im part th e life of God (Rom. 8:2, 9, 10). To seal us for God (Eph. 1 :1 3 ). To teach us the things of Christ (1 Cor. 2:10-16) 3. W itnessing to Jesu s’ Glory, vs. 14, 15. The Son glorified the F ath er. The Spirit glorifies the Son. (John 16:14) Everything— religions, churches, indi vidual lives,— can be tested by this: Do they glorify Jesus Christ? The supreme motive of th e manifes tation of the Spirit is to glorify Christ. Every line w ritten, every act described in th e New Testam ent from th e day of Pentecost un til the Book closes, is to the praise of His glory. The Holy Spirit is th e recipient of th e glory of Christ. He sheds it forth. Christ passes it on to th e .F a th e r, and the F a th e r pours it out again upon th e Son. The whole work of Christ may be summed up in th is phrase: “Receiv ing the things of th e F ath e r and show ing them unto men.” The whole work of th e Spirit is in receiving and show ing (v. 14). How are believers to glorify Christ?

By subm itting themselves to the will of ^ th e F ath e r. The Son came and manifested th e F ath er. The Spirit came and manifested th e Son. He glorifies th e Son. He receives of the things of Christ and shows them unto us. So th e glory of Christ dwells in us! Where is Christ to be glorified? Here,—where He was rejected, cruci fied, here, where He lived as a man, He is to be glorified as God. He is to be glorified in th e home, in business, in social life, in th e assembly, in th e quiet hour. Rays of glory broke fo rth even dur ing His earth ly life. In th is age th ere is more fulness; bu t both are prophetic of th e glory which is yet to be re vealed. The world in which He was re jected, shall receive Him, where He was crucified, He shall reign. “As He is, so are we in th is world” (1 John 4 :1 7 ). The chief business of believers is to “Receive— show ,” “ F reely ye have received, freely give.” Topics fo r Study (1) W hat is the foundation reason for antagonism towards Jesus Christ? (2) Why does God perm it the perse cution of His people? (3 ) W hat is the value of persecu tion? (4) W hat advantage accrued to be lievers through Christ’s dep art ure? (5 ) Is it possible to get th e fulness of tru th ? (6) How can all things belong to the F ath er, and yet, also, to th e Son? ■^¡4-

SUGGESTIVE COMMENT P asto r A. Reilly Copeland Tabernacle B ap tist Church, Waco, Texas

The two-fold work of th e Holy Spir it is (1) To beget souls (John 16: 8-11). (2) To build up saints in the faith (Col. 2 :7 ).
