J e s n s s a it h n n to th e m , L o o s e h im , a n d le t h im g o .” Power to redeem and keep men (John 10 :28 ). “ A n d 1 g iv e n n to th e m e te r n a l l i f e ; a n d t h e y s h a ll n e v e r p e r is h ; n e ith e r s h a ll a n y m a n p lu c k th e m o u t' o f m y h a n d .” Power to establish and sustain the church (Matt. 16 :18 ). “ A n d u p o n t h is r o c k I w ill b n ild m y c h u r c h a n d t h e g a t e s o f h e ll s h a ll n o t p r e v a il a g a in s t i t .” (4) THE PLEA FOR PRESERVA TION, “Holy F a th e r,; keep through th ine own name those whom thou hast given me.” Jesus prays for His disciples. He has manifested, or made known, th e name of th e F a th e r to them . “F a th e r” is a new title for God, a new name and a new relationship. Jesus Christ came to reveal th e F a th e r (John 1 :1 8 ). Men had had bu t a fain t conception of God as a F ath er. They knew of H is wis dom, His power, His greatness, and th e sp iritu al Jews had an idea of His fa th e rly care (Psa. 103 :13 ), bu t He was not known to them as a F ath er. Now, they were to know th e F a th e r because they knew the Son (John 14 :7 ). The F a th e r had given to them Jesus as a love-gift (vs. 6-9; 6 :3 7 ). “ A ll ( h a t th e F a t h e r g iv e t h m e s h a ll c o m e to m e ; a n d h im t h a t c o m e th to m e I w ill in n o yvise c a s t o u t.” That takes in all believers. How, He gives us to Jesus. Believers belong to Jesus as a love-gift from th e F ather. Jesus is about to ta k e a new posi tion in glory. He had k ep t th e disci ples in th e F ath e r's name. Not one had slipped through His hands. Now th e F a th e r is to assume a new relationship to th e disciples, and Jesus tran sfers th e ir keeping to Him. They belonged to the F ath er. He created them , chose them (Eph. 1 :4 ), purchased them (Acts 2 0 :28 ). Now Jesus calls th e a t tention of th e F a th e r to them and
th e im portation of etern al life, through th e Son, to those whom th e F a th e r has given Him. H is intercession and coming (John 14 :3 ). “ A n d I f I g o a n d p r e p a r e a p la c e fo r y o u , I w ill c o m e a g a in a n d r e c e iv e y o u u n to m y s e lf, t h a t w h e r e I a m , th e r e y e m a y b e a ls o .” (3 ) THE POWER PROMISED, "A ll things whatsoever thou h ast given me are of th ee.” All power is given unto th e Son (Matt. 2 8 :18 ). “ A n d J e s n s c a m e a n d s p a k e u n to th e m , s a y in g , A ll p o w e r Is g iv e n n n to m e In h e a v e n a n d in e a r th .” Power over men, H called, con strained , commanded men (Luke 5: 11 ). " A n d w h e n t h e y h a d b r o u g h t t h e ir s h ip s to th e la n d , t h e y fo r s o o k a ll a n d fo llo w e d H im .” (Luke 22:11, 12).
