Sharing What I’m Grateful For My Favorite Thanksgiving Tradition:

The No. 1 thing I’m thankful for is the birth of my sixth child — a beautiful baby girl.

Many people say Christmas is their favorite holiday to spend time with family. But for me, Thanksgiving is my favorite. Logistically, Thanksgiving is easier for Jessica and me to visit family because we don’t have to worry about traveling with gifts. When you’re driving several states away with six children, all the gifts they come back with take up a lot of space. Presents will fill our car to the brim — I won’t be able to look out the rearview mirror! So, it makes more sense to travel to see family during Thanksgiving and spend Christmas at home with my immediate family. One of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions is after we finish our delicious feast, we will go around the dinner table and share what we’re thankful for. Today, I wanted to share with you what I’m grateful for this year. The No. 1 thing I’m thankful for is the birth of my sixth child — a beautiful baby girl. Jessica gave birth to Rosie Lynn Brooks at the end of August, and both are happy and healthy. As with all of our children, we didn’t find out the baby’s gender ahead of time, but this time we both felt pretty certain it was a boy. We were definitely shocked the doctor announced it was a baby girl, but we were ecstatic nonetheless! We’re grateful we have another daughter because our fifth child is also a girl, and now she has someone to play with. What’s interesting is that all of

our kids are in pairs. We first had two girls, then two boys, and now we have two girls again. I can’t wait to watch Rosie grow and see how she interacts with her siblings. She’s already loved by so many.

Next, I’m grateful for our dental practice. As you know, we recently remodeled the office and opened our doors again last month. It took over two years for this to happen between the pandemic, planning, finding the right contractor, and supply chain issues. It felt like remodeling may never happen, but it finally did. I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Thank you for being so patient during this time. It’s not easy working in an office under construction and then closing for well over a month. But you all were very understanding and supported us the entire time. Thank you for your continued support — it means more than you know. I’m also thankful for nature and God’s creations. Over the past few years, it has been challenging to carve out time to spend outdoors. I made it a priority this year to go on more hikes, and I’m happy to say I have achieved this goal. I take my kids with me, and we love to hike new trails, learn more about the animals living there, and spend quality time with each other. I’ve found a deeper appreciation for nature and its vital role in my life. Being outdoors benefits my health and gives me daily exercise, but it also helps me clear my mind and relax. My wife has also been thankful for my taking the kids on hikes with me while she rests with Rosie! And while closing your office is never easy, I’m actually very thankful for the timing of the remodel and associated closure. I had the opportunity to stay home while the office was under construction, which was right after our baby was born. I’ve never had paternity leave before! I was home to care for our kids and Jessica. Being able to spend this extra time with them is something I cherish. This Thanksgiving, I encourage you to take some time to share what you’re grateful for and tell your loved ones how happy you are to have them in your life. I hope you and your family have a happy Thanksgiving.

Yes, Oral pH Matters

We should brush and floss our teeth daily and have semi-annual cleanings to ensure our oral health is in the best shape. But if you have a medical condition that compromises your immune system, there are additional preventive measures you should take. BREAK OUT THE MARKERS AND CRAYONS

Creating art is a fun activity that kids of all ages can enjoy. There are many options for kids — they can try creating things with clay, drawing, coloring, and even finger painting. Get your child a new set of markers or crayons, and they’ll keep themselves entertained for hours. Art isn’t just for entertainment, though. When kids are allowed to create under the right conditions, it can bring many benefits. Young kids can refine their motor skills and some will even show improvement in their cognitive development. Art has the ability to open many doors for kids. Below you will find three major things that young children can learn from crafting. CREATING ART HELPS KIDS BUILD NECESSARY SKILLS. One of the most beneficial ways that art benefits children is by helping them work on their motor and problem-solving skills. When kids draw something, they need to think about how they can create what they’re picturing in their minds. They may have to fix errors, and working on their drawing skills will help them gain better control over their hands and wrists. Children who cut and glue, finger-paint, or sculpt clay will have improved coordination and dexterity. ART PROVIDES KIDS WITH ANOTHER WAY TO COMMUNICATE. Not all kids are great communicators, and this can hinder their confidence and prevent them from speaking their minds. Art provides an alternative solution to their communication problems. They can draw what they’re thinking and share that with others around them. Even when kids aren’t creating art, being around it helps ignite their imagination. CRAFTING BOOSTS CONFIDENCE. When you were a child, did you ever give your parents a picture you drew that they decided was worthy of hanging on the fridge? How did that make you feel? Chances are you felt pretty good about yourself. When kids create art, they are choosing what they make, which helps boost their self-esteem. When they share their art with others and are met with positive feedback, their confidence skyrockets. Art is much more than an activity to entertain your children. It’s an opportunity for them to fine-tune their skills and improve themselves. Encourage your children to create art — you’ll soon notice the benefits. THE BENEFITS OF KIDS CREATING ART

In honor of November being National Diabetes Month, learn how diabetes can affect your oral health.

WHAT HAPPENS IF DIABETES GOES UNTREATED? If you have diabetes, several things can compromise your oral health. The first health issue concerns a lack of moisture — your mouth is dry, or you’re producing less saliva. Saliva protects your teeth, so if your mouth is dry, you may have a higher chance of getting cavities or tooth decay. You may have high blood sugar if you have diabetes. High blood sugar can lead to cavities because the acid in sugars and starches can wear away your teeth. Another issue includes gingivitis. Since diabetes reduces your ability to fight off bacteria, your gums may be inflamed and begin to bleed, which is a sign of gingivitis. ARE PEOPLE WITH DIABETES PRONE TO GUM DISEASE? Unfortunately, yes. If you have diabetes, you have a higher chance of having a gum disorder called periodontal disease. This inflammatory condition can destroy your gums, tissues, and even bones. You’re at a higher risk of gum problems because of poor blood sugar control. This is because diabetes causes your blood vessels to change and affect the blood your gums and bones receive. CAN A DENTIST HELP ME WITH MY DIABETES? While diabetes is uncurable, it is treatable. If you have diabetes, you must visit your dentist every quarter for cleanings. Why? Because your medications can affect your gut health, making you more prone to cavities and gum disease. Frequent teeth cleanings will allow your dentist to prevent infections and other issues. Recent studies also suggest that treating gum disease can help you manage your blood sugar, which may reduce the spread of diabetes.

Most parents want their kids to view Thanksgiving as a meaningful event — not just an opportunity to indulge in turkey and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, most kids’ eyes will glaze over when their parents launch into a lecture about thankfulness. You will likely find better success by emphasizing the value of gratitude all year long. “What do you say?” It’s a question we all ask our young children after someone does something nice for them. This practice instills good manners, but it shouldn’t be confused with teaching gratitude. Imparting the meaning behind the words “thank you” takes something more. If you want grateful children, you need to be grateful parents. Consider how you can incorporate gratitude more into your everyday life. Are you as thankful as you should be? Do you repay favors and write thank-you notes? Do you regularly talk about why you’re so fortunate or what you’re thankful for? Cultivating gratitude in your life sets a good example, and many studies show it benefits your mental health as well. A DAILY DOSE OF GRATITUDE Raising Thankful Children

have been good to us can inspire kids to put their gratitude into action. Doing some yardwork, sharing a toy, or making a painting as a gift can help children understand how powerful it can be to outwardly show our gratitude for the people who are in our lives. Consistency is the most crucial factor, so try to find ways you can incorporate gratitude into your everyday routine. Children of any age can keep a gratitude journal with their parents’ help. Some families also use a gratitude jar where each family member can write what they’re grateful for on a slip of paper and add something different to the jar each week. It’s the perfect way to keep gratitude front and center.

Next, consider how you can encourage your child to reflect on who they’re grateful for. Acts of kindness and returning the favor to those who

These lessons may not sink in immediately, but by cultivating these positive habits in our everyday lives, you will see a big difference in the long run.
