MARCH 2022

I’m proud of many things about this work, but chief among them is that I have the privilege of operating a family-owned small business that has become a pillar of sorts in the community. But we’re not alone. Les Stanford Chevrolet has not only been a great customer of Janet Davis Cleaners, but they have also supplied our region with quality vehicles for years. Manno Clothing and Tailoring has been a long-time customer, too. They have offered top service for men’s fashion in our region for years, and Alexander’s Custom Clothier has offered a similar service, providing custom, tailored clothing for men. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention Westborn Market, just next door to us and across the region! Operated by fourth- generation owners, Westborn Market supplies gourmet fresh food to consumers every day. At Janet Davis Cleaners, we have also had a long-standing close relationship with Frentz & Sons Hardware. Our family became close with the Frentzes after my dad’s cousins grew up just down the street from the Frentz family. The store is also family-owned, and their service is a staple of our community. You walk into the store and you’re hit with the same smell and greeted by a friendly face, and you always see five or so family members working there. I even have a friendly relationship with other local laundry services in our area. We’ll often get lunch together, and instead of swapping war stories, we talk about our families and any news. We’ve all come to learn that we may be in competition together, but that doesn’t mean we have to be unfriendly with each other. In fact, I’ll often send customers back to their original dry cleaner if they come to us with an issue from another dry-cleaning business. I like to think they would do the same. I enjoy being part of this small-business community and supporting businesses like these and many others. Together, we’re among a nation of business leaders who experts say provide two-thirds of the new jobs in the country and make up more than 99% of all businesses in the U.S. This Mom and Pop Business Owners Day, I encourage you to support your favorite local small businesses.

It’s uncanny. Sometimes when I meet new people in our community, they will ask what I do for a living. I explain that I am the owner of Janet Davis Cleaners, and without a moment of pause, they immediately know us from our big neon sign, a friend who uses our services, or because they have been loyal customers for years. CELEBRATING SMALL BUSINESSES WHY WE’RE PROUD TO BE HERE

As I like to say, everyone has a Janet Davis story.

Moments like these are what make me proud to be a fifth- generation small-business owner. Our operation has grown a lot over the years, but the heart of it has remained the same. As we approach Mom and Pop Business Owners Day on March 29, I can’t help but feel proud of the way my family has served our community for five generations. I learned the business from my father, who learned it from his father (my grandfather), who learned it from his aunt and uncle, who learned it from my great-great-aunt’s father. And like most of them, I began my career working on the Janet Davis floors. In fact, my first job at Janet Davis Cleaners was in high school. My dad had me clean out the lunchroom-turned-junk room. Part of the process included changing the ballast in all the fluorescent light fixtures — the same chore my dad had when he started working at Janet Davis Cleaners when he was younger.

Your support keeps our family’s dreams (and stories) alive. Thank you!

Protect Your Linens During Spring Event Season We’ve Got Your Cloth Covered

4 Health Benefits of Spring-Cleaning IT’S MORE THAN JUST TIDYING UP

As we approach spring holidays and outdoor gatherings, you may be planning to entertain. So, you start prepping the grill, stocking up on everyone’s favorites, and dusting away the winter dirt. You may even freshen up your linens, swapping out winter’s dark colors with fresh, light options for spring. However, if you didn’t properly store your tablecloths, cloth napkins, and other linens, or if you didn’t wash these materials before putting them away, you may find a disaster in your linen closet! Don’t panic; our team at Janet Davis Cleaners has the expertise and resources to freshen up your favorite linens just in time for spring events.

Sunday, March 20, is the first day of spring — which means it’s time for some spring- cleaning. Did you know that cleaning is not just about tidying up a physical space? It’s also about improving overall well-being. Here's how organization and cleanliness can help you in more ways than you might expect.

SPRING-CLEANING REDUCES STRESS AND DEPRESSION.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Tidiness and mental health are actually connected. Studies have found that having a clean home is directly correlated to happiness and your ability to focus. Anxiety can spike when laundry is piling up, items are strewn everywhere, and papers get scattered on various surfaces within the home. Clearing the clutter is a great way to boost your mood and increase those feel-good hormones.

Linens are derived from flax plants, and items made from this material are durable, lightweight, and soft. This makes linen the perfect material for food stains and repeated use. And when properly taken care of, linens can last for generations! On the contrary, harsh detergents, fabric softener, and improper storage degrade linen fibers. When you opt for a dry-cleaning service to care for these items, your linens are washed gently — with

formulas designed for linen — pressed, and folded in a way that protects the integrity of these items. Linens should also lie flat on a shelf or hang in a closet to avoid storage wrinkles. If you opt for folding to store your linens, keep the heavier items on the bottom, and consider sliding acid-free tissue paper between each fold. This can provide a protective barrier. As with many other materials, keep your linens in a cool, dark area.

Doorknobs, refrigerator handles, light switches, countertops, and remote controls are all things we touch many times a day. Cleaning anything that’s used often is one way to reduce the spread of germs. By keeping household surfaces clean, we help thwart the spread of viruses and illnesses.

SPRING-CLEANING HELPS YOU BREATHE BETTER.

Spring often brings pollen that triggers allergies for many. But pollen isn't the only thing to blame when people have difficulty breathing. When dust and pet dander build up in your home, your respiratory system is greatly affected too. Deep-cleaning your air filters and vents can make breathing effortless — and it’s truly amazing how this can improve your well-being.

ADD JANET DAVIS CLEANERS TO YOUR PARTY TO-DO LIST

IT KEEPS YOU MORE ACTIVE.

Hosting a party is exciting, but it’s also a lot of work. Don’t add cleaning and freshening your linens to that list. If you do, you may damage these priceless items. Plus, you have enough projects on your plate already! If you are hosting a spring gathering, drop off your linens at Janet Davis Cleaners to ensure they are cleaned properly and protected. And if you know someone who is hosting, be sure to mention our services. We can tackle those big tablecloth stains that are always a sign of a great party.

Off the couch and on your feet! Even just running the vacuum and clearing the clutter from the dining room table will get you up and moving, which is healthy for your heart and body. This spring season, putting some elbow grease into your cleaning will benefit you in more ways than one. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!

TACKLE UNIFORM STAINS LIKE A PRO Our Best Tips

It’s the season of peanuts and Cracker Jacks, but for parents everywhere, it’s also the season of grass, dirt, and sweat stains. If you have a little slugger — or know a family who spends every weekend each spring and summer at the ball diamond — this guide for uniform stain removal is a must-save!

DIRT’S WORST ENEMY

Dirt stains are a little different than grass stains. Where grass tends to “bleed” onto uniforms, small grains of sand can cling to clothing items. These particles can be highly degenerative for clothing, so it’s important to treat and clear these stains the right way. The secret to removing these safely is to use powdered detergent. The enzymes in liquid and powder soaps will scrub the dirt stain away, but powdered detergent does a better job because the granular nature of the product adds a mechanical element.

THANK YOU FOR THE HANGERS!

SPOT TREATMENT TIPS

Keep Going!

Grass stains are common for Little Leaguers, but when you simply wash uniforms without properly spot treating them, you embed these stains into the fabric. This can diminish the integrity of the uniform and deepen the stain. To prevent this, use a spoon, water, and detergent to spot treat grass stains. Mix water and a small amount of detergent in a bowl, and using the back of a spoon — not the sides of it — gently rub the mixture into the grass stain. If the area around the stain starts to bleed green, dab it with a paper towel. After this treatment, the uniform is ready for the washing machine.

Our team is truly shocked ! We cannot believe how many hangers we have received after we put out the call to return your hangers to us in late 2021. You are helping us save both the environment and some money as the hanger shortage continues and prices increase. Thank you to those who have continued to return your hangers. And please keep it up!

NEVER CHECK ESSENTIAL ITEMS. Lost luggage is the worst way to start a vacation, but it happens. If your luggage is misplaced, you probably won’t get it back that same day. So, you need to pack all essential items, like prescription medications or glasses, in your carry-on bag. Some experts even recommend tossing an extra shirt or pair of underwear in your carry-on in case your bag gets lost. You'll be glad to have them if something goes awry. Packing smart will make for a less stressful journey. You can kick back, relax, and enjoy the trip knowing that everything you need is right there in your suitcase, and everything you don’t need is safe at home.

Here are some essential tips to keep your load as light as possible — physically and mentally.
