Noel Nunn-Faron - “Unveiling the Silent Struggle: Exploring Anxiety and Depression in Exceptional Learners” (poster session) Did you know that according to the CDC, “In 2021, more than 4 in 10 (42%) students felt persistently sad or hopeless and nearly one-third (29%) experienced poor mental health? With this project, I look further into why that is and share my investigations of the impacts of anxiety and depression on exceptional learners, both gifted and special needs students, in K-12 schools. My poster will share the rates of anxiety and depression in exceptional learners compared to neurotypical peers. I intend to increase awareness of this topic and equip educators with safe, evidence-based methods for supporting all exceptional students. Morgan Osborne - “An Educational Model on the Prevention of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia” (session 8) Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) increases the mortality rate in Surgical ICU patients and requires intervention to be prevented. This project explores the use of a checklist for nurses to implement a 5 step process: chlorhexidine mouthwash, raising the head of the bed to 30-40 degrees, repositioning every two hours, daily respiratory assessments and medication therapy as needed. An education model was constructed to inform nurses of the five step checklist. By educating critical care nurses with a five step checklist of prevention methods research supports a statistical decrease in cases of VAP. Cordell Owen - “Nursing and Burnout” (session 17) Burnout among nurses is a rapidly growing problem. This issue will persist as our healthcare system changes and we are pushed to accomplish more with fewer resources. Nurse burnout affects more than just the physical well- being of the practitioner; it also affects patient care and outcomes. Staff satisfaction, lower attrition rates, and positive environments for nurses, employers, and patients should result from the use of strategies to prevent burnout. An educational pamphlet was created to increase understanding of the factors that contribute to burnout and evidence-based strategies for preventing it to assist this problem. Jeanie Palsis - “Student Debt Affecting College Students Academic Performance and Mental Health” (poster session) The purpose of this study was to examine how financial problems affect college students’ academic performances and mental health. Financial difficulties may be a perpetual nightmare for families, and they can play a key part in students dropping out. The need to manage part-time jobs or prioritize financial worries above academics can affect the quality of education students receive. The fear of post-graduation financial instability, as well as the pressure to repay student loans, can have a negative impact on mental health, affecting concentration,
motivation, and to be able to be fully engaged in academic studies. We hypothesized that the increase in financial stress among students will be associated with higher levels of mental health challenges and poor academic performance. The experiment took place at Missouri Valley College and used self-questionnaires to collect data. The data indicated a significant correlation between high levels of student debt and poor academic performances. Students who are struggling financially often face challenges with managing their educational expenses, leading to increased stress, lower focus, and a higher probability of poor performance. Karintzin Patron-Arreola - “The Economic Impact of Taylor Swift” (session 3) Taylor Swift is one of the most influential figures in the media due to her success in music. Ever since her self-titled album dropped, Swift has been breaking records left and right. Through music sales, concert tours, brand endorsements, and social media presence, Swift’s profound influence on industries ranging from entertainment to fashion is undeniable. This presentation takes a deep dive into how Swift’s cultural influence impacts the economy of the United States. Tom Pelzer - “How to Make Valuable Connections in the Business World” (session 15) In today’s competitive business world, success is often deeply connected to one’s professional network. My presentation will explore various strategies and techniques for making valuable connections in the business world. From digital platforms to helpful tips and benefits, attendees will learn how to cultivate meaningful relationships that will open opportunities and doors. Autumn Perez - “Aggression in Children with an Addicted Parent” (poster session) Parental addiction can significantly influence how children develop behaviorally, potentially resulting in heightened levels of aggression. One in eight children live in a household of at least one parent with substance abuse disorder, four in ten teens believe their parents are addicted to their phone, and the list goes on with addictions within households. Whether the addiction is to substances like drugs and alcohol or behaviors like excessive social media use, it can lead to increased aggression in children. By looking at factors like parental mental health and family dynamics, we aim to understand why this happens and how we can help children in families affected by addiction. Ultimately, our goal is to find ways to support these children and promote their well-being. An insecure attachment style has been produced in these unstable homes. In which has resulted in a lack of trust, comfort, and compassion in parent-child relationships. The increase in aggression in children living with an addicted parent has become a concern. I am doing research on this and want to present the information found because I want to help others understand the significance.
