Heather Callaway RCDD, LEED AP, CTS-D

Page 22 | Certifications

How did you get started in the ICT industry?

I started in 1997 and I had my CAD degree, and found out that there was a discipline called telecommunications. So, I ended up starting at an engineering firm doing technology design, that’s how I jumped into ICT.

What value has BICSI brought to your career?

Indescribable, because I wanted to become a PE, professional engineer, and that wasn’t in my path, so when I got into the technology industry, I started to learn that there are certifications in the industry. When I learned about the RCDD, it was definitely something that was part of my path, and I still after over 20 years (I received it in 2002), still remember that feeling when I received it.

What advice would you give to someone starting in the ICT industry?

There’s no limit. Get in, get involved, and as you grow in the industry, get [to] volunteering, because it’s a great way to meet other people that are doing the same thing as you and you can learn.

More than words from WOMEN BICSI in excellent opportunity to widen your network by meeting the other competitors and interacting with like-minded peers! The BICSI Cares Women in BICSI Cabling Skills Challenge (CSC) Grant provides financial support to assist with direct travel costs associated with participating in the BICSI CSC for a female competitor. The grant applicant must complete a BICSI Cares Women in BICSI Cabling Skills Challenge Grant application and must be accepted as a competitor in the Cabling Skills Challenge to receive the funding. Additional information and guidelines can be found here. If you or someone you know is interested in applying to compete but lack BICSI certifications, BICSI Instructor-Led Installation Classes are an excellent resource to gain the hands-on skills necessary to pass certification exams and qualify for the CSC. The gender gap in TECH is especially visible at conferences as well as on jobsites, but this does not need to be the case. Employers can help educate and assist women by

Five Points Infrastructure Services LLC This year, Women in BICSI (WiB) is in transition. Almost all voting members in the workgroup are new and represent a range of ages. We span various technical roles in ICT, including marketing, design, networking, and consulting. We are seeking additional volunteer help as we transform. To that effect, I want to discuss a list of goals for 2024 that align with our charter. GOAL: TO ENCOURAGE INTERACTION, PARTICIPATION, AND NETWORKING AMONG PEERS AND BICSI MEMBERS We are actively seeking candidates from WiB for the 2025 Winter Conference & Exhibition Cabling Skills Challenge (CSC). It’s been two years since we had a female competitor, which does not reflect the growing number of women entering the science and technology fields and obtaining related degrees. All BICSI- certified installers and technicians are invited to apply to the challenge. This annual competition is an

experienced peers to bounce ideas with and field your questions provides a boost in knowledge. More female mentors are needed, so if you are an experienced ICT professional, consider sharing your knowledge with someone new to the industry. GOAL: TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO BICSI STAFF ON RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION Increasing our activity in the Women in BICSI LinkedIn Group and other social media platforms will assist WiB with retention, engagement, and membership. However, as we ramp up our social connections, we also need more active female BICSI volunteers. This is not just for the Women in BICSI Workgroup, but in all areas of BICSI. Consider applying for committee positions, writing content for BICSI magazines, or preparing a BICSI presentation. Starting small and volunteering for a committee will allow you to form meaningful career connections with others, and those relationships will expand the network of people you can reach out to when you need information or career- planning guidance. In addition, share what those committees are doing with WiB to further communication, education, and interest across volunteer groups. Overall, I expect that WiB will continue to pave the way for women in the ICT field and provide opportunities for networking and mentorship as we work to achieve these and other goals in 2024. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact WiB@BICSI.org or click here to apply!

sending them to career-boosting classes, such as those offered by BICSI. Please reach out to the women in your network who work in the field pulling and terminating cable and/or splicing fiber and let them know about BICSI’s education and certification offerings in installation. Educate them on how the BICSI Technician® (TECH) certification will provide them the knowledge and opportunities to learn and earn more, and make sure they prepare and apply for the CSC. When women are made aware of these kinds of opportunities and encouraged to participate, it can be the career boost they need to succeed. GOAL: TO COLLABORATE WITH THE BICSI MENTORSHIP WORKGROUP BY IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL MENTORS AND MENTEES FROM WIB ACTIVITIES Year after year, women are provided the opportunity to pair with other women as mentors. It is very exciting to see women in ICT giving back to the industry. The experience and knowledge a mentor can provide a mentee, such as career advice or how to navigate the field, is invaluable. Heather Randolph, chair for the BICSI Mentorship Workgroup, has been a mentee herself and is now giving back as a BICSI volunteer. It is important to remember that mentorship is not just for “older” mentors and “younger” mentees, but also for people changing careers. Everyone benefits from the mentorship experience. Having

LDC SPOTLIGHT By John H. Daniels CNM, FACHE, FHIMSS, CPHIMS BICSI CEO The Leadership Development Committee (LDC) consists of a Chair, 2 Board members appointed by the Board President, and 4 elected BICSI members. Their main purpose is to facilitate the annual nominations process and present slates of eligible candidates for Board Officer, Board Director, and LDC elections each year. The LDC helps identify the leadership competencies and skills needed to achieve BICSI’s strategic goals and recommends strategies for identifying and developing BICSI’s future volunteer leaders. Each year, the LDC reviews BICSI’s strategic plan and facilitates the

annual Board and LDC self- evaluations to identify the competencies and skills gaps created by the outgoing Board and LDC members. The LDC then reviews and approves “position descriptions” for the open positions defining the desired competencies and skills needed for the incoming Board and LDC members. The LDC then issues a call for self-nominations for the open positions (15 April - 31 May). For the Board Officer elections, only current Board members, other than the Board President, Board President- Elect, and Immediate Past Board President, may be eligible to self- nominate for a Board Officer position based on term limits defined in BICSI’s Bylaws. The LDC then presents to the Board a contested slate of all Board Officer candidates for only the Board members to vote (15-30 April). The candidate in each position with the highest number of votes is elected. For the Board Director and LDC Member elections, the LDC’s activities may include identifying possible candidates, contacting potential candidates, recruiting these candidates, interviewing

candidates, informing candidates of the demands of Board or LDC service, and helping them complete the self-nomination process if needed. Every LDC member reviews and scores each self-nomination based on a standardized rating scale approved by the LDC. Based on the results of the initial review, the LDC will select the top 8 Board candidates and the top 4 LDC candidates who best match the desired qualifications (June). The LDC then interviews and scores each of these top candidates using an appropriate set of questions and scoring criteria (July). Once the interviews are completed, the LDC selects the top 4 Board candidates and top 2 LDC candidates who best match the desired qualifications and then publishes the uncontested slates to all members. BICSI members will have a 30-day petition

period (August) to consider the slates and submit a petition to add alternate candidates. If members do not submit any petitions, the slated candidates are considered accepted by the membership. If petitions are submitted to add an eligible alternate candidate, the LDC may publish a contested slate giving members 30 days to cast their votes (October - November). The 4 Board candidates and the 2 LDC candidates with the highest number of votes are elected. The election cycle ends when LDC officially announces the newly elected Board Officers, Board Directors, and LDC Members after all candidates have been notified of their individual results. Thank you to the volunteers serving on the LDC.

Stay engaged with BICSI throughout the year! BICSI Membership Advantage

Hello BICSI Membership! Spring is upon us; baseball has begun, and summer is right around the corner. While we prepare for our summer vacations, family outings, and holiday cookouts, let’s also remember to continue our professional development. For those of you whose credentials are expiring in 2024, this is a great time to check your CECs and conference requirement status on the Credential Holder Dashboard so you can prepare for recertification. We have a variety of on- demand opportunities available on BICSI Connect and a slate of virtual and in-person training already on the calendar. I also want to remind everyone to take a moment to log in to your Customer Service Center. I’ve made a career working with a membership association and one of the most common complaints I’ve heard over the years is, “Why didn’t I receive the [insert: newsletter/renewal notice/voting notice/volunteer opportunities, etc].” Unfortunately, it’s too frequent an occurrence that we are unable to connect with members due to outdated or missing profile information. Log in today to verify or update your: • Contact information: email (primary and secondary), phone, cell phone, addresses (work and home) • Membership expiration date • Credential status • Employer and professional title (if you don’t have an employer listed and would like your account to be connected, reach out to bicsi@bicsi.org) Account profile maintenance is an important part of ensuring that you can take full advantage of your membership benefits and BICSI opportunities, while staying on top of your credentials. So, while you’re preparing for the fun and sun of summer, also remember to plan for your professional development needs with BICSI. Regards , Kevin Minot, MS Membership & Volunteer Services Manager membership@bicsi.org or volunteerservices@bicsi.org
