DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

Insights into diversity, equity, and inclusion practices for business leaders Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) have become hot topics in recent years. Businesses across the country are investing in strategies to make workplaces more supportive by making DE&I values part of their commitment not only to social responsibility, but as a strong aspect of their culture. Some companies utilize internal resources to lead DE&I efforts; others turn to an organization like Marsh McLennan Agency (MMA) to help them develop and implement a sustainable framework for belonging within their unique organizations, says Gary Abernathy, an MMA vice president and DE&I practice leader. MMA helps organizations with everything from DE&I assessments designed to identify barriers to inclusion to analyzing policies such as a company’s benefits strategy, and how they support underrepresented groups. While training alone is not a solution, MMA offers hands-on training to increase awareness and understanding for all. “We are fortunate to be able to engage with clients in many different ways— whether it’s to help organizations create and support their DE&I committee, launch employee resource groups, or look at policies and procedures through

a lens of inclusion,” Abernathy says. “When it comes to DE&I, I tell clients to think of us as an extension of their team.” Here, Abernathy shares his perspective on some commonly asked DE&I questions among businesses.
