The Bisaillon Brothers

American brothers Jeffrey and Michael Bisaillon have been creating art for over 20 years, combining their talents to produce "uber-contemporary" mixed media Pop artworks. Influenced by artists like Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the duo evoke an exciting commentary on the pop culture of today and the mid-20th century.

A house with bare walls was the catalyst for American brothers Jeffrey and Michael Bisaillon to combine their artistic talents. Now creating Pop Art works inspired by Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, they navigate the pop culture of today and the mid-20th century via digital art, vibrant colours and bold brushwork. Their original mixed media artworks incorporate a range of mediums, including canvas, wood, paint, pen, resin and spray

paint. Showcased globally – including a sell-out show at Art Basel in Miami and exhibitions in the Netherlands and Great Britain – their pieces explore themes of globalisation, celebrity culture, consumerism and fashion. It is a timeline of technique: from traditional painting to colour theory, printmaking, photography and digital art, the pair have amalgamated each of history’s milestones to form their own

genre. Jeffrey’s passionate brush strokes illustrate his affinity for abstract and modern art, while Michael is captivated by the symbology and digital art process. The brothers’ work is underpinned by the belief that what lies in the future has its roots firmly in the past. “We are the perfect solution of culture past, present and future,” explains Jeffrey. “The digital age is upon us, and our art will reflect this. History is still being made.”

An homage to iconic brands and celebrities, this collection – named after the French for ‘face’ – uses the idea of cut-out space to create a 3D effect. Within each mixed media painting, a relief is created with a depth of 2.5 inches to form a wall sculpture. MODERN VISAGE

These works are created using wood, polystyrene, printed imagery, abstract art and resin. Symbolising our need to search for acceptance and validation through our phones and social media, this series of super-sized phones reflects the important role they play in our lives. Jeffrey says: “Phones have brought about a whole new way of living; they are a window to a virtual community. People are holding their lives in the palm of their hands.”

VINYLGRAPHS

For this collection, the pair researched music history to add layers to the pieces. They were inspired by their father, who is a keen collector of vinyl records. Jeffrey adds: “He has six jukeboxes and thousands of 45s, so we thought creating a 45-rpm vinyl would be really cool. They are made on wood grain with detail on the face and a hole cut in the centre.”

Fusing art and design, these artworks are elevated for the 21st century through the incorporation of colourful holes. Michael explains: “The idea is that they create a lightwell, so not only can you look through it but it reflects the internal colour of the holes onto the surface behind.” The Pop Simplicity works capture sirens of the silver screen, mixing monochrome and multicoloured elements. Some of the pieces feature a hint of glitter in the resin to add a different feel and texture. MODERN SIMPLIC IT Y & POP SIMPLIC IT Y COLLECTION

THE POP COLLECTION

The brothers reveal that this collection took them back to their roots while allowing them to explore abstract and thematic elements. Describing the series as “an intermediary between iconic imagery and culture”, they interpret the world around us in the form of influential figures and brands.

Jeffrey created the colourful abstract elements, while Michael used binary and trinary code to create the number systems and codes. The red barcode signifies commercialisation and the omnipresence of brands in modern society.
