Church on Sydney Street vandalized

Martin. The Martins decided to rent it a year later and to give the building a new calling. The building is now a place for local musicians and singers to perform acoustic music. “It hasn’t been a church in over 50 years… I don’t see anything wrong. It’s still a place where people gather,” said Susan Martin. “It’s the first time this happens. I called the police and they told me they couldn’t do anything,” said Brock Frost, tenant of the building. Frost isn’t worried
that any other incident could occur, and sees it as an exception, done by a person not in the right state of mind. “There are a lot of crazy people out there. It happened right after an event and no, I’m not worried. So far we had a great response with our events in the community,” he added. “To break a window isn’t respectful of the church either. Two wrongs doesn’t make it right,” said Angèle Ouimet, membership coordinator at the church on Sydney.
A window was smashed at the former church located on Sydney Street near Second Street during the night of June 19 and a note, reading “ Running this type of business in the House of God is blasphemy…you will burn in Hell…”, was found nearby . The building was purchased in January 2011 by Chris and Susan

E-BIKES, MOPEDS AND MOTOR SCOOTERS
The Journal
Public safety is one of the Cornwall Community Police Service’s top priority. The safe integration of new and innovative vehicles with other vehicles and pedestrians is an important consideration for our service and our community. Authorities would like to remind the community that e-bikes/e-scooters, mopeds and motor scooters are not permitted on sidewalks. The operator of any of these vehicles must be at least 16 years of age, must wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet and follow the rules of the road under the Highway Traffic Act of Onta- rio. Before purchasing/operating a new type of vehicle, researching requirements for equipment and licensing is required, under the Highway Traffic Act in Ontario and permitted uses in the City of Cornwall. Studies have shown that wearing an approved helmet while cycling greatly reduces the risk of injury should a mishap occur. The law currently requires children under the age of 18 to wear a helmet. Operators of e-bikes/e-scooters do not require an Ontario driver’s licence, a licence plate, or vehicle insurance. Operators run the risk of being tic- kets for operating a motor vehicle without registration and insurance. E- bikes purchasers who have concerns with the pedal location may want to consider other models and/or styles of e-bikes. If a person’s driver’s licence has been suspended, it may not be legally allowed to drive an e-bike. If a person has been convicted under the Criminal Code of Canada that has resulted in a driving prohibition, it becomes illegal to operate an e-bike until the prohibition has been lifted.
